Jessica McCallum | 7 comments I got this book from the library when I was in school somewhere between 2007-2009 I think. It didn't seem that old but I don't really remember. The protagonist is stuck at a weird train station in the middle of nowhere and is trying to save someone (a sibling? or father maybe?) who is stuck on this train that comes in and out of the station each day (I think). There are others stuck on the train too, and they are slowly fading away, in a kind of trance state. Eerie vibes.

White cover with grey writing?

Spoilers incoming:

The protagonist ends up finding an exact model of the train station in a basement area below the station and works out that if they move pieces on the model, those things move in real life.

maybe?

Unfortunately not. Pretty much the entirety of the story takes place at the station, from my memory. Also the setting is more of a dustbowl town than a big city.

Definitely has some very similar themes, but I don't think it's the one I read

Wikipedia's plot summary (with Spoilers) of the short story Willa by Stephen King - Rose's suggestion. Sounds like a great story but not quite a match.

Really similar, but not it unfortunately! Thanks for the suggestion though!

Rainbowheart | 28881 comments Dustbowl town makes me think of the Coven Tree series, but I don't think any of them took place at a train station.

Was the main character male or female? Approximate age?

Hi there! Just wondering, did you ever manage to find the book you were looking for? I’m trying to track down the same story and thought I’d check if you had any luck. Your original post provided so much more detail than I could recall. Thanks!

Jessica McCallum | 7 comments Sorry Mitch, I still haven’t figured it out!

Google Books preview of Last Stop (also called "Watchers: Last Stop") by Peter Lerangis - Becca's suggestion:

- There are different cover images.

Jessica McCallum | 7 comments Unfortunately my memory of this book is so hazy, but the detail I mentioned in my original post about the miniature model of the train station is probably the part I remember most clearly, so that would be the identifying fact.

I finally tracked it down after a long search! The Vanishings, by Michael Panckridge
Instantly recognised the cover when I saw it.
