This is a Buddy Read Academ's Fury by Jim Butcher starting July 1, 2023.

Prologue & Chapter 1:

Also. the lady doth protest too much, methinks, about the event from the previous book. I want to know what is to become of that situation. The conversation with her father is quite amusing.

- You know, if you give your subordinate permission to speak freely, you can't get mad when they do. However, Miles was more than a bit crass.

- Why couldn't Ehern keep his mouth shut and keep walking? UGH

- And then there's Max! (And Tavi's reaction). LOL

Starting!

re: Prologue--hah! The Lady totally protests too much... and I love the way Doroga points it out subtly. Though I do feel sorry for Kitai--(view spoiler)[the Clans seem organized by Totem, and Kitai is currently technically a Clan of one right now... it's hard being the first, and the only.

LOL Miles talks like an old friend more than a subject. But then, SOMEone has to... but yeah, sexist much? (hide spoiler)]

Max is one of my favorite characters--he really knows how to have fun!

I'm up through Chapter 7 now... the audiobook version I bought on kobo has tracks every 5 minutes and no chapter markings, which is very annoying... makes it a lot harder to tell where I am...

(view spoiler)[The Vord are getting scary... I like the very ominous creep of the Vord threat, very different from the heavy oppression of the Marat in book 1.

It's interesting having women's rights be a major political issue too. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 2:

(view spoiler)[ It's pretty incredible that despite his supposed disabilities and difficulties (the bullies), Tavi has become a leader of his group of friends (even if they don't yet realize it) while still taking classes and performing his duties.
I'm just sorry that he has to dumb his skills down in front of his peers. I understand the need, but I hope they learn the truth and strengthen their friendships (hide spoiler)].

Chapters 3 - 7:

I do love Amara and Bernard's relationship.

The Vord sounds terrifying!

People need to stop messing with Isana; she is more intelligent and stronger than others give her credit for, and she will not suffer fools. But her empathy seems to overwhelm her.

Chapters 8 - 11:

Gaius -Whoa!

The Cane - Oof!

Tavi is so darn smart!!

We learn more about Isana & Amara.

OMG! That sorting hat is hilarious. And I'm sure Brencis would also be Slytherin, so they'd have some fun bumping into each other in the house common room...

Chapters 2-11 re: Tavi--(view spoiler)[I love that scene where he subtly manages to show everyone their failings without them knowing it in the obstacle course cursor training thingamawhatsit! Tavi is probably one of my all-time favorite characters. I really give Butcher props for coming up with so many creative problems for him to solve in creative ways.

And I think it is also an interesting exploration of "disabled" versus "differently abled"--Tavi is one of he most competent people around, he just is missing a part that people expect to be there...

re: Fidelias--totally agree there... I remember the first time I read this series, when Fidelias was introduced, I wasn't expecting him to become an important character but then he becomes pretty big...

I think I'm up to chapter 20? EDIT Sounds like I was more at 22 or so... Oops! (view spoiler)[I love Max! He cracks me up each time he comes on page. I had a massage today and asked if I could put the auidobook on, and my masseuse was cracking up too. His act with First Lady Cora was inspired... and made me think of Miles's crass words earlier. Max isn't wrong though... I remember also, how Aquataine was seducing her at the end of book 1--all Gaius would have had to do, to earn her whole loyalty, would've been to treat her with some kindness and charm... but instead, he plays her like a tool, as he does everyone else... and thus has made her into a potential liability.

I really love the scene with Tavi and his second interaction with the Canim. How he figures out that there's something going on here that isn't quite right, and how to do the chin-lift thing. I love that there's all these different species interacting here...

Isana is doing a horrible job masking her emotions again, and in a really dangerous court... I like the courtesan, and the old Knight is a charmer too... but going in to the Kalare's party was a really dangerous move... (hide spoiler)]

Diffirently-abled is an excellent description. And Tavi's may be the thing to save them all. After listening to the lesson he shared with Max, it is clear that Furries are great companions when needed but can also be seen as a hindrance. A person can leave themselves with no other defenses or resources when using their Fury as a crutch; however, when untrained, the Fury is unreliable. Therefore it is essential to be well-balanced,

There is so much going on in this one, and I'm anxious to see who comes out of it unscathed. Tavi is the only person with definite plot armor, but I'll be heartbroken if we lose any of his family (I'm including Amara) or friends.

Thanks for those specifics information--I fixed the timing... It was probably 22 or 23.

Really nice note about how furies untrained can be a crutch. It also makes me think of how reliance on furies in general has stagnated societal progress in other science.... like, furies make folks lazy. I'm up through Chapter 45 or so I think--and I love how (view spoiler)[Kitai/Black Cat really drives this point home. She and Tavi make a great pair. And I might have been squeeing a little when they were gazing at each other's eyes, and Kitai comforted Tavi when he cried... (hide spoiler)]

re: Max--I know right!! (view spoiler)[I keep imagining he'd have to like, drug her so she'd fall asleep and maybe think they just had mind-bending sex... I can't imagine that anything further than a kiss would be forgiven by Gaius, even if he didn't actually do anything potentially impregnating... is it bad to look forward to the action getting so crazy that there'd be no time for this to become a worse problem? re: Vord--(view spoiler)[I was worried about that too at first, but when Amara looked in the Knight's eyes... it seems like it's actually pretty easy to tell when someone has been Taken--they don't really act human any more... more have to worry about loners or maybe injured, people jumping up from "sleeping" etc... I'm just thankful they don't seem do the same thing with fresh corpses... no Vord army of Undead. (hide spoiler)]

Like I said, I think I'm through chapter--hah! I JUST hit 48 literally while writing this, so I'm through 47.

I think the sequence with Kitai & Tavi working to jailbreak Max is one of my favorites in the book. Especially when Tavi reports to Killian afterwards. Take that Fury-blind dummies!

Vord are scary enough. Vord + Canim are frickin' terrifying.

Honestly, the Amara & Bernard storyline is my least favorite in this book... (hide spoiler)]

re: plot armor--one of the things that makes this such a fun series to reread is that I am freed from those worries. ^^ The series is very satisfying overall.

I started this yesterday afternoon and binged half of it in one go… even forgot to check on my mouse hunting game for 3-4hrs…

This book flies by so easily… and this series… it’s a shame Butcher isn’t a faster write, with more time for non-Dresden books…

Vord really remind me of the Antinium Wars

I just finished Chapter 45.

So many things have been going on, and I didn't want to stop to comment.

The Vord are among the most terrifying enemies I've ever read about!

When you only have 8 chapters remaining, but work keeps getting in the way!

Reading spoilers now... don't have much to say, except this is a great world of characters...

I think it's Canum/Canim, not Cane... like Canis is the genus for wolves/dogs... I think they are like wolf-men?...

Tavi definitely has a less biased understanding of the world... this is really well displayed in that classroom scene about how Egyptians built the pyramids, basically... and the Alerans don't believe it... "impossible without Furies"...

The book definitely throws alot of hints that seem super obvious, at least on re-read... (view spoiler)[Gaius at the end of the first book, Fade at times if you think about it, Miles when he learns about Fade/Araris and has an epiphany, Miles & Gaius at the end, Isana in the epilogue... It's been a day, and I'm still in withdrawals from this book, reading easy stuff until I'm ready for more meaty storylines again...

I'm glad you both finished! I feel your pain for this kind of day.... any time I catch a student reading in my class I make them feel guilty because they are doing what I wish I could do but I can't because I have to adult.

This is a reread for me, for Iain--is it a reread for @Nyssa too? Who are our first-timers?

@Iain, re: hints--I really enjoy seeing those hints from the start... they're so obvious on reread, all of them... I wonder how many newbies have guessed things? I don't remember which books state which things straight out, though I'm pretty sure a big one is at the end of 3, or 4. This one had one big one...

From what I remember, (series spoilers) (view spoiler)[ Tavi learns he’s Gaius Octavius in the next book at the end, and becomes heir to the empire… and gains his Fury connection… not sure id it’s with Alera herself or that comes later, since that’s Sextus’s Fury… war escalates, as does relationship with Canin/Varg… take war to other continent largely controlled by Vord… Canim continent I think… Sextus eventually dies of overtaxing himself and poison… Tavi becomes ruler, but has a war to deal with first… ends in a bit of a stalemate with Vord controlling other continent and a 100 year truce… Tavi changes the game by having Alera give Canim access to Furies, to help them prepare for the inevitable 2nd/etc Vord War… (Butcher has no plans to write that) (hide spoiler)]

One or the other... maybe Furies is #3 and Octavian is #4? I think it was Fade who reveals the truth to him... and then he uses it to take the camp back... bah! Was that any intelligent resident of the world could kind of... earn a fury through hard work, instead of by blood heritage--not just Canim, but the Marat, and also to even out the power imbalance in the high lords... Books 1 - 3 are a re-read. but I never finished the series so I want to do it this year. I vaguely remembered the storyline of this one, but I'd forgotten a lot of the details.

This is one of those rare series where I don't find myself indifferent to one of the leads; usually there's a character I don't care for and I mentally groan when I come to their chapter, but not so much. I suppose Amara is the nearest I have to that in this book, but I liked her too much in the first book to dislike her much here, and I like her relationship with Bernard. I really disliked the Vord - (view spoiler)[I've always found that mind-control sort of thing disturbing - I'm just glad the vord die with their host body - a creature that can scurry away when their host dies and find someone else to puppet is the stuff of nightmares. (hide spoiler)]

We've definitely packed the summer with reads... everyone's running late somewhere, except maybe Iain.

I don't consider myself late, if I start within 1-2 weeks of the start date (the official window for BRs), read straight through pretty fast, and don't have to ask for a reschedule :D

I consider myself late if I start the book to make sure I get the bonus point, then let it sit for days/weeks before finishing... I'm late on a handful of books all year, I'd say, and just abandoned the few BRs I wasn't feeling like Chronicles of Amber...

Up to Ch. 11... (view spoiler)[ So, Kitai and her dad noticed something evil is following Tavi, and later we found out that it's most possibly one or more of those creatures they awakened under the tree with the spiders, and they are calling them Vord. And they are shape shifting fiends! Right there starts my paranoia, since now at once, everyone becomes a suspect!!! I hate that...

The first conversation between Miles and Gaius was very telling of first, their friendship, but second, the way this society thinks of women... Crass is right, Nyssa...

The kids at the academy... Tavi didn't expect this type of treatment, I am sure. As he said, his dream to go there came true, but be careful what you wish for...

Tavi hiding his abilities is coming at a cost, but obviously is necessary. There are too many potential enemies around.

I was very proud of his actions when Gaius collapsed. And him confronting the ambassador Cane was absolutely beautiful!

The Vord are absolutely terrifying and I am not sure my heart can handle it!!! Now this is a real enemy and g-ds help the rest of the races on this planet! Which reminds me, when Bernard was talking about where the Marat came from, he said "Another land, another planet..." . So they are not native here either...

Fidelius. I hate having him running around freely - he is one scary dude to have as an enemy! Trying to kill Isana with a young, untested assassin, was fullish...

Speaking of Isana. I said last book, I loved her character the most! However, her hatred for Gaius seems unreasonable. If her real motivation is that her sister and brother-in-law were killed during a war, because Gaius ordered them there, that makes no sense at all! By the same logic, she would have to carry the blame for anyone killed in her service. Ridiculous. Her hatred seems way too big to not be over something personal, and she is too bright to blame anyone for deaths during war... Also, we all figured she is Tavi's mother... What do her sister and brother-in-law have to do with anything... And why is she lying to everyone about it?

But she really needs to knock it off, the way she is treating Amara!

It was probably retired on the 15th, 2 weeks from the start date... that's how most Buddy Reads are shelved, to appear in that visual on the front page of the group...

The meeting between Varg, the Canis ambassador, and Tavi was interesting. Why did he warn him about "the rats in the walls"? Obviously, someone from the inside is trying to eliminate Varg, but why did he tell it to Tavi? What could he do? Also, another wolf-man is coming to replace him as an ambassador... Hmmm... Political intrigues abound everywhere...

Miles is Fade's brother... The mystery deepens! (hide spoiler)]

We learn a lot of "secrets" in this installment!

Bernard! The Vord are not just some "new creatures, and exciting"! They are a real danger!!!

Amara is trying to distance herself from Bernard, since she talked with her courtesan friend about not being able to have kids... Blighted, the same Blight that killed the girl's family... I wonder if there is a cure for her condition. This is a magically full realm, there has to be something!

Amara's conversation with Doroga was so good!!! He ate the wrong soup:)))))))

Fidelius was just ordered to make sure Isana is dealt with on permanent basis, while she is trying to reach very tired and needing of rest Tavi. Tavi meanwhile, is trying to teach a crash course on Anthropomorphic Theorem to Max, who had been too busy looking at girls in class to actually learn it... "I have no objections to education, as long as it doesn't interfere with my sleep":))) Max is hilarious, but I have a hard time believing he is as dim as he comes off as being... Maybe he is hiding as much as Tavi is. And obviously his father was very abusive to him...:(((

I see your guys' points about the use of Furies as becoming a crutch and reliance on them can be stagnating to progress.

Max and the First Lady! What a weird situation... He did good though... But boy, the potential complications if he goes through with it!!! Drugging her is not a bad idea, instead of actually sleeping with her...

I don't even want to think what would happen if Gaius doesn't recover. A civil war for sure! Then weakening of the realm, leading to war of all species, then overall destruction... Not something to look forward...

The Vord @ Aricholt! Just horrifying!!! The thought of them infiltrating every group, just scary as hell!!! And I really hope they can tell the real from the infected, but how many people would know how to or even look for it to begin with!
They are kind of like the Goa'uld from Stargate, but even more like the crab-like creatures that took over a ton of the leading generals in Star Trek... And a bit like the Nfected in Dresden Files, and like the silvery fish creature in Sun Eater ...

That party! Lady Aquatain is possibly one of the most dangerous folks in the land. And high lord Calare is a total asshole!!! I was so proud of Isana for standing up for Serai! Nyssa, Ialso don't trust her, particularly because she is a slave and whoever buys her can control her actions, despite being a Cursor, but I think if she was free, she would have been very trustworthy... Those two ladies are being hunted I can't even imagine the pressure...

Did they just kill Serai?!?? And the nice gentleman with whom they are staying!!! They did! Fidelius!!! And hit Isana! (hide spoiler)]

Up to Ch. 30... (view spoiler)[ Max knows Lady Placida... He saved her son's life... Hmmm...

Tavi has a good mind - he deduces things very quickly. I can't believe Varion and Renzo attacked them right when they were following to catch up with Isana's kidnappers .. And he finally showed his fighting skills..

CPM, Tavi's academy bully, is scary too... Is he drugged, or has he been taken by a Vord? And he just stabbed Max in the back!!! What an asshole!!! But his father is even worse! Thank goodness for Lady Placida! I only hope she didn't sign her death warrant by supporting our boys...

Ooohhhh, no! The sleeping legionaries!!! The crawling parts of the Vord, The Takers!!! The Captain's eyes are "wrong"!!! He has been taken! And he can use Furi Craft! That is just not fair! So much damage from one of them! How the hell are they going to win against them?!?

So it was Calare's people who attacked Isana and killed Serai. And Fidelius actually saved Isana. This is weird. I will hate it if from desperation Isana actually agrees to work with Nvidia Aquatain!

Miles might be loyal to Gaius, but he is not an easy person to work with... Kilian is the only one of this group who has been able to stay coolheaded... But now he is grieving for his old friend.

I have been suspicious of Kitai being the thief Tavi was sent after, feeding herself while watching over Tavi. But if it was her, I think she would have showed up during the fight where he almost got killed, to protect him, and she didn't... Where is she?

Gaius has to awake! And if he does and his wife comes to "finish what they started", she will be very disappointed...

Ooohhhh, Fade tried to protect his little brother, Miles, and he resented him for it... Brothers!

I am glad Tavi finally recruited Gaelle and Ehren! And finally he decided to hunt for the thief "to learn how to get around the safeties" around the dungeon to free Max... A bit convoluted, but I will take it...

And he found her:) She is very indignant about him growing taller and stronger! Hahaha! And she admitted she was watching him, but obviously not doing a great job at it... But at least she is going to help... (hide spoiler)]

Up to Ch. 35... (view spoiler)[ Even Max can't understand that things can be done without Furie Craft... They have gone too dependent on magic...

The teacher's recap of the rescue and Tavi's pros and cons of her had failed were hilarious! And he smacked his pupil in order to understand the seriousness of the situation... Kilian also figured out that Tavi was not alone while doing the rescuing...

I am very worried about the Canis - I have a feeling that the Vord might have taken over that whole camp...

I am very glad Tavi chose to confide in Kitai. She really has no cards in this game and can be objective. I also want them to watch Varg and figure out what is happening with his wolf-people...

So, Kitai is not there to watch over him, but to watch the Alerans as a whole... Because Alerans are her Totem... She wanted a horse! Now she has no clan and is alone! Ooohhhh!
