So I have been looking for a book for a really long time that is Tim Burton-esque and post-apocalyptic. If anyone has seen the movie 9 (animated, knit-dolls, steampunk-ish), I really want something like that. I guess what I'm trying to find is something that explores the emotions and psychology, but in a fun way. Other movies that fit this idea are Sucker Punch, Cloud Atlas (I do have this book), and Pandorum. The last two aren't really Burton-esque. I mostly just want something psychologically engaging.

It's mainly a YA series but there are adult themes and a very steampunk theme in Chris Riddell and Paul Stewart's The Edge Chronicles. There are thirteen books that deal with 3 different generations starting with Beyond the Deepwoods and ending with The Immortals. Absolutely will get invested in the series and the characters.

Whilst his work is not specifically post-apocalyptic, I think just about anything by China Miéville would probably interest you. As the leading light of the "new weird" genre, his written work has close parallels with Burton's visual style. Perdido Street Station is very good, but it's part of a series. As an introduction, I think I'd recommend Kraken, or Embassytown. There probably isn't going to be a happy ending...
