3 Months from Start

November is International Games Month - a program that libraries across the globe participate in. They invite patrons to come to the library to play table games, which serve as a fantastic way to connect with others, enjoy healthy competition, and challenge ourselves mentally and physically.

Indoor games such as Monopoly are beloved pastimes in the US, but let's check out some fun games with origins from around the world that you might not be familiar with.

Complete 12 tasks - one for each game below.

Link to Participants

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and re-post in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

1. Mahjong (China)

Mahjong (also spelled mah-jongg) might be the most familiar game in this challenge due to the many variations of it found in phone games today. But the original table game actually started in the mid-19th century in southern China as a gambling game. It is a game for four players that involves matching a series of engraved tiles about the size and shape of traditional dominoes. The objective is to obtain a specific set of 14 tiles by strategically choosing and discarding tiles. This version is still very popular in China today and Chinese immigrants across the world continue to play mahjong as a means to remain connected to their heritage. In the late 1930's, American Jewish women also embraced the game, and were instrumental in establishing the National Mah Jongg League in New York City.

Read a book set in China or one that features an MC of Chinese descent (tell us who) OR read a book that has 1 AND 4 in its total page count (post page count).

2. Lotería (Mexico)

Though it has its origins in Italy, lotería (Spanish for lottery) has become synonymous with Mexico since it was brought to the Americas in the 18th century. The game is played similarly to bingo. Each player is given a tabla (board) with a grid of pictures that correspond to a deck of 54 cards. As each card is drawn and its name announced, the players mark off any matching sections of their grid. Once a player’s tabla has been filled out, they announce their victory by shouting “¡Loteria!” or “¡Buena!”. You can purchase different sets of Loteria cards throughout Mexico, but the most recognized one is the "Don Clemente Gallo" version, introduced in Mexico in 1887 by French businessman Don Clemente Jacques. This version has continued to be produced for over three generations.

Read a book set in Mexico or one that features an MC of Mexican descent OR read a book with a title that starts with a letter in TABLA (ignore A, An or The).

3. Ludo (India)

The very widespread and yet simple game of Ludo has its roots in India and is actually a less complicated version of their game of Pachisi. Both games appear in ancient cave paintings and extensively in Indian mythology. In its ancient form, the game included a “board” made of wool or cloth, and small metal or wood pieces with dots, instead of the cubical dice. Ludo was brought to Britain in the 19th century from colonial India, where it was patented in 1895. Today it is played in many countries around the world, though often under different names, some that are based on the emotions one feels while playing. Germans have labeled it as mensch ärgere dich nicht, which means "man, don’t get upset"; in Greece it is called γκρινιάρης which means "grumbler"; and the US version is simply named Sorry! Today there is even an online version of Ludo, which became extremely popular in India during the Covid lockdown phase.

Read a book set in India or one that features an MC of Indian descent OR read a book that takes place in the 19th century.

4. Five Hundred (Australia)

The national card came of Australia is a trick-taking card game that involves bidding and scoring. It is similar to euchre, hearts, spades, and bridge. It gained its name because the first players to reach 500 points are the winners. Typically, four players play in pairs across a table with each having their own 43-card deck where the red 2 and 3 cards and the black 2, 3, and 4 cards have been removed from the traditional 52 card deck. One joker card is used and in the Australian decks you will find the joker depicted by a kookaburra. The game is equally popular in New Zealand, but it is interesting that the game was, in fact, invented in the USA by the US Playing Card Company, who copyrighted the rules in 1904. It continues to be popular in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania, where it has been taught through six generations community-wide.

Read a book set in Australia or the US (tell us where) OR read a book over 500 pages long (post page count).

5. Crokinole (Canada)

The traditional Canadian game of Crokinol is all about dexterity. The name is derived from the French Canadian word Croquignole, meaning fillip, snap, biscuit or bun. The players flick discs with their fingers across a circular wooden board, trying to land their disks in the scoring regions on the board, with the highest scoring area being the recessed hole in the very center. If there is an opponent's disk on the board, you must aim and hit their piece first. It is usually played by two or with two partners. There are many variations, but it is the rules determined by the National Crokinole Association that govern the World Crokinole Championship, which has been held annually since 1999 on the first Saturday of June in Tavistock, Ontario. Sounds like Canada takes this game pretty seriously!

Read a book set in Canada or one written by a Canadian author (include link to author page) OR read a book with a circular object on the cover (post cover).

6. XiangQi (China)

Aanother game from China must be included as it is one of the most played board games in the world. Commonly referred to in English as "Chinese Chess", XiangQi (pronounced shiang-chee) translates loosely as "elephant game". It is first mentioned in the Songs of Chu, an ancient anthology of Chinese poetry from 4th Century BCE. Based closely on ancient Chinese military strategy, the game is played with 32 pieces (16 per player) on a board that is 9 lines wide and 10 lines long. Like chess, each piece has its own rules and type of movement attached to it. The area of play is divided into two territories by a river in the middle of game board. In each territory there is a palace, in which the General is located. The object is to capture the opponents' General. The game is still very popular throughout Asia, and outside of the continent you will find men playing XiangQi in Chinatown neighborhoods across the world.

Read a book set in Asia or in a Chinatown neighborhood outside of Asia OR read a book with an author whose first or last name includes an X or Q.

7. Go (Japan)

Lots of ancient legends surround the birth of this game, including it being a favorite of Buddist monks and court astrologers using it for fortune telling. But during the 17th century, the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan loved the game so much he established four schools dedicated to the study of I-go. After the ruler's collapse, the game lost popularity, but in the early 20th century, Go was back in full swing, and gained a significant following in Japan, even moving into the Western world. By all appearances, the game is two players taking turns laying stones on a 19×19 (or smaller) grid of intersections. But once its basic rules are understood, Go shows its staggering depth and has been called one of the most elegant brain-burning abstract games in history, with players trying to claim territory by walling off sections of the board and surrounding each other's stones. When the board is full, whoever controls the most territory wins. The concept has gone on to contribute to other abstract strategy games, such as Connect6, Go-Moku, and Pente. And I must add this comment: I just love the expression of concentration in the picture above!

Read a book set in Japan or one that features an MC of Japanese descent OR read a book that really challenged your brain (tell us why).

8. Catan (Germany)

As compared to the others, Catan is a fairly young game that was invented in Germany by Klaus Teuber in 1995 under the name of Settlers of Catan. In a very short span of time, the game became an instant hit, winning numerous awards, and has become the first Eurogame to achieve mass popularity outside of Europe, actually precipitating a shift in game tastes in the US. It is a strategy game where all players become settlers and try to build and develop their own estate and holdings. As they grow their holdings and settlements they win important points and can eventually trade their assets with other players. Similar to the Dungeons and Dragons phenomena, Catan had gained dedicated players that take advantage of all the accessories and expansion packs that can be purchased to make the game more elaborate.

Read a book set in Europe (tell us where) OR read a book with a title that contains all the letters in CATAN (any order).

9. Afrikan Tähti (Finland)

Afrikan Tähti is a Finnish board game that can be found in almost every home in Finland. Designed in 1949 by 19-year-old Kari Mannerla, it was published two years later in 1951, and since then has sold over 3.5 million copies. In 2014, an expanded version: Afrikan tähti: Retkikunnat, was published by the rights owner. The main objective of the game is to find the legendary giant diamond, the Star of Africa, and return it to Cairo or Tangier. Players begin exploring Africa, encountering tokens with different outcomes that slow their progress. When someone finds the Star, a race begins. The player with the diamond tries to deliver it back to Cairo or Tangier, while other players hunt for a horseshoe - a token once discarded for having no value before, but now, a key to victory. The winner is the player who reaches Cairo or Tangier first, carrying either the diamond or a horseshoe.

Read a book set in Finland or Africa (tell us which) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in STAR OF AFRICA.

10. Oware (Ghana)

Oware is the National Game of Ghana and a favorite game from the ancient Mancala family of pit and pebble games. The word "oware" means "He She Marries" and the legend behind the name is that of a wedding between a man and woman and the all important dowry, represented by pits and seeds. It is a game with two participants playing on a board with two rows of six holes. Players take turns “sowing” seeds by picking up tokens in a given pit and depositing them, one-by-one, in sequence around the board with the goal of capturing all your opponents' seeds. Fast gameplay is encouraged, as taking one’s time is considered anathema to the spirit of the game. The game is played at social events but you can also see it commonly played on the streets of Ghana where heckling, banging the fist and mocking are all allowed. The game is also used in education among the Asanti children for the development of math skills.

Read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in GHANA OR read a book that features children or teens in school (briefly share details).

11. Partner Dominoes (The Caribbean)

Most of us know what dominoes are or have maybe even played the game. But it's a whole different ballgame when you play in the Caribbean. Walk past any bar, café, or park, and you’ll likely witness teams of avid domino players shouting, jumping up and down, and slamming down the rigid rectangles. It may sound like a brawl is about to erupt, but in most cases, it’s just a friendly game of partner dominoes. Locals typically refer to the domino pieces as “bones” and often enjoy a cold beer or cocktail while they play. There are several variations depending on which island you are on, but they are all played in partners, usually two teams of two players. Partners can’t see each other’s hands, but those who play together frequently often become masters at figuring which domino their partner will play, so they can play accordingly. Domino tournaments are very common in the Caribbean, with teams traveling between islands to compete.

Read a book set on an island (tell us where) OR read a series book #2.

12. Estanciero (Argentina)

This Argentinian board game is a spiritual cousin of Monopoly, but instead of becoming a real estate mogul, you work to become the richest cow herding rancher in the country. The name Estanciero is the Spanish word for rancher and players compete to grow their ranches, collect as many provinces as possible, working to ultimately bankrupt the other ranchers. But unlike Monopoly, Estanciero offers respite from the capitalistic appetites of your fellow players, with the innovation of a rest space that allows the player to hide and avoid getting hit with fees from other players. This is a popular game in Argentina and the 75th anniversary edition of the game is a highly sought after purchase.

Read a book that is set in South America (tell us where) OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in ESTANCIERO (2 word minimum)
