Jenny | 8101 comments Hello Wheels Seven!

Welcome to all of the Gideon the Ninth Team! (A deliciously weird book, by the way.)

I am Jenny, one of the captains, and along with Angie and Ive, will be cheering on and guiding and answering questions along the way. And perhaps throwing in some extra bits of merriment.

For any of you who have not played Wheel before, worry not, we've got your back. If you have played before, so glad you decided to play again.

The thread will be open soon, so we can all start getting to know one another.
There is a tracking spreadsheet for our use, linked in message 4 above.
If any of you are not comfy using the spreadsheet, we can work around it.

I have sent out friend requests for those who I am not friends with yet. Please accept requests from the captains so we can keep track of the Wheel shelves.

Looking forward to Wheel!

Angie ☯ | 3127 comments Hello team Gideon 9!

Welcome to the fast and furious version of Wheels! Each round will last only 1 week - plan accordingly as this is a change from the normal version of Wheels.

Looking forward to playing with everyone. Most of the team I've not had the priviledge of being in team challenge with...yay...new challenge buddies!!

Have fun - chat - be crazy......life's too short not to!

Jenny | 8101 comments Well the Veterans Day Parade just ended. Every parade goes by my shop, so I had a customer free morning, which meant I was able to get some work done!

The parade always starts with a flyover and this year it was eight World War 2 biplanes. There is something about airplanes that just makes me happy. I ignored the rest as much as I could, but there is only so much I can do to tune out so many marching bands. teehee

Hi team!

Jenny | 8101 comments Space Opera is not everyone's cup of tea, but there are some really fun books out there. So, I am listing books that I gave at least 4 stars, and have enough tags for our purposes. Some of them even have brown covers!

Not very space-y, and very character driven-

Taylor William Shakespeare's Star Wars Verily, A New Hope (William Shakespeare's Star Wars, #4) by Ian Doescher

Classics worth a read-

More space-y, but great stories-
Children of Time (Children of Time, #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse, #1) by James S.A. Corey The Stars Now Unclaimed (The Universe After #1) by Drew Williams Noumenon (Noumenon #1) by Marina J. Lostetter Far from the Light of Heaven by Tade Thompson Nyxia (The Nyxia Triad, #1) by Scott Reintgen The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1) by Tamsyn Muir The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1) by Mary Doria Russell

YA space-y goodness-
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1) by Orson Scott Card Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman Skyward (Skyward, #1) by Brandon Sanderson Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1) by Amie Kaufman Victories Greater Than Death (Unstoppable, #1) by Charlie Jane Anders Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis Zoe's Tale (Old Man's War, #4) by John Scalzi

OK. Now I want recommendations from you guys if I missed anything brilliant please.

message 15: by Ivelisse (new)

Ivelisse | 133 comments You are right, this is not my cup of tea but I've had Project Hail Mary on my TBR for a while now. This might push me to read it!

message 16: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8101 comments That book is soooooo much fun. I probably should have listed under character driven, but there is some space stuff too.

message 17: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2446 comments I was surprised that I enjoyed Project Hail Mary after reading it for a book club.

message 18: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8101 comments I think the genre Space Opera intimidates non sci-fi readers. It is just another setting for some really good stories.
Of course there are some that are so science-heavy that it helps to have taken some advanced math and physics courses for. teehee
I did not list any of those.

message 19: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8101 comments So, since we have a few days until the challenge begins, let's get to know one another!

Answer as many or as few of these questions as you wish-

-What is the favorite thing you remember about your hometown?
-What are your favorite two movies?
-What is your favorite reality show?
-Dark chocolate or milk chocolate?
-Will you share pictures of your pets? (Looking at you and your dragons, Ive.)
-If you could read one book again for the first time, which one would it be?
-If you could have one magical or superhero power, what would it be?
-Rollercoaster or quiet walk through the woods?
-Do you play any musical instruments?
-And finally, list five (or more) books that we all need to add to our TBR lists.

message 20: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2446 comments Not sure how many times it has to be tagged Space Opera, but this is one of my all time favorite books, and is fairly short. It is tagged 12 times as Space Opera.
Phule's Company (Phule's Company, #1) by Robert Lynn Asprin

Also really enjoyed this one (space opera 52 times).
Redshirts by John Scalzi

message 21: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8101 comments Oh, Damn, I am pretty sure I read Phule's Company about a thousand years ago. I know I read some other Aspirin books as well.

It needs to have ten space opera tags.

It's the best! I like it even more than the Otherworld. There is Welsh Faery and there are also mysteries and serial killers. It's so good.

Jenny | 8101 comments Three and a half hours until the start!

Jenn, well answered on the space opera question. Just to reiterate, we do not need to read space opera books, they just give the team extra points! (Plus, there are some good books out there!)

Ask for Navi and she appears!!!!!!!

Jenny | 8101 comments Hi Navi!

We are all checked in!!!!

Angie ☯ | 3127 comments Diane ~Firefly~ wrote: "Question - do we add a book to the tracking spreadsheet when we start it or when we finish it?"

Hi Diane!
You can do it either way. But, if you plan to complete the book by the end of the round, I would suggest adding it when you plan or start it so that we don't all read for the same letter. :-)

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8101 comments IT'S TIME

You can all start your books!

What? You are at work? Stop it! teehee
