SP 2015 10.8 – Podcast Reading
In case you don't notice, some of those podcasts are hosted by people who have blogs, so make sure if you use the search function that the result links to a podcast episode.
Cory, just to be sure I get it right, Book Riot podcast #50 mentions The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I can read this one (long on my TBR and I own it), but also need to post this link:http://bookriot.com/2014/04/28/book-r...
Hi Cory:I was just using the link that Theresa posted above to get the hang of this task.
http://bookriot.com/2014/04/28/book-r...
I found a book I've had on hold for awhile on that list, but they've misspelled the title.
They have it listed as 'Deployment' by Phil Klay
I think it should be Redeployment by Phil Klay
This book won the 2104 National Book Award for Fiction.
Can I get Redeployment approved for this task?

You're good on that one - I actually remember that episode and the book cover. The show notes just got it wrong :)

Thanks! -- In doing more research on the book I found that it's not a novel, it's a short story collection. Wa-hoo! This qualifies it for Style points.
Ok showing my ignorance again. I'm not exactly sure what a podcast is. Is it an audiobook? I went to some of the sites, so in order to find out what books are on the podcasts, do I have to listen to all of them? Sorry I'm so not with it!
This is going to be tons of fun, but there are so many, I just want to check a couple of things:If there are multiple pages of podcasts are we allowed to go to all of the pages or just the initial linked page?
Are combo points done the same way? If we link to the podcast where the book is listed, we can claim the combo?
If the podcast does not actually list the books discussed can it be used if we listen to that podcast, or are we going to always be able to find the books listed in print? Most of the ones I've checked so far list the books, but on my first run through, I didn't see that on some of them.
Thanks! I've already found some books I really wanted to include this season that I couldn't fit anywhere else.

You do not have to listen to all of them to find books -- yoou can read any book mentioned in the summary of any episode. For example:
http://writerandcritic.podbean.com/
Under the banner is "Episode 42: ‘The Bitterwood Bible’ and ‘How to Be Both’"
Books listed that qualify:
The Bitterwood Bible and Other Recountings by Angela Slatter
How to be both by Ali Smith
Sourdough and Other Stories by Angela Slatter
Scrolling down the page, will will find "Episode 41: ‘Hild’ and ‘Station Eleven’"
Books listed that qualify:
Hild by Nicola Griffith
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth
Straight: The Surprisingly Short History Of Heterosexuality by Hanne Blank
And so on. Some of the websites linked are a little disorienting and it took me a little time to understand the layout & how for skim for interesting book titles!
Christine wrote: "Are there links to the booklists somewhere or do we actually have to listen to the podcasts to find them?"You do not have to listen to the podcasts to find books. I haven't explored all the websites thoroughly, so I don't know which lists the books.
http://booksonthenightstand.com/ has a searchable book index.
Karen Michele wrote: "If there are multiple pages of podcasts are we allowed to go to all of the pages or just the initial linked page?..."All episodes of the twelve linked podcasts are eligible (so yes, all pages)
Karen Michele wrote: "Are combo points done the same way? If we link to the podcast where the book is listed, we can claim the combo?..."
Yes
Karen Michele wrote: "If the podcast does not actually list the books discussed can it be used if we listen to that podcast, or are we going to always be able to find the books listed in print? The book must be listed in the episode notes/summary. And, unfortunately, some podcasts are better than others at listing all the books discussed.
Books on the Nightstand #229 mentions "Narnia" but does not specify a volume. Can that be used for the entire series?http://booksonthenightstand.com/2013/...
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "Books on the Nightstand #229 mentions "Narnia" but does not specify a volume. Can that be used for the entire series?http://booksonthenightstand.com/2013/...-..."
No, the specific title must be listed. Also, when I used control-f to search the page you linked, there is no mention of "Narnia" or "Lewis".
Christine wrote: "Still a fair number of books to choose from, but a lot of episodes do not list the books. Just FYI. "
Books on the Nightstand has about 2000 books. I also looked at The Book Nerd, which has a search field. At this point, I'm overwhelmed with combos.
Christine wrote: "I was browsing through these in a random way. Unfortunately, quite a lot of them do not list books. There was one of them in particular that frequently said in their summary that they talked about ..."That's true, and I expect it's why the moderators allowed me to keep so many options on the list :)
Dear Book Nerd is hosted on bookriot.com, which has regular entries in addition to a few different podcasts, so just make sure it comes from a podcast entry and not just a blog post.
I'm already finding that I remember certain books being talked about but I can't remember which podcast, or the book won't have ended up on the show notes. Still, the combos will be plentiful, I expect.
Cory Day wrote: "Dear Book Nerd is hosted on bookriot.com, which has regular entries in addition to a few different podcasts, so just make sure it comes from a podcast entry and not just a blog post. "Thanks for this. The one I found *was* apparently from a blog.

Christine wrote: "What I'm not gonna try to do - which I hate because I find it very fun - is to find combos on those podcasts for other tasks. With the exception of the few that have very easy searchable lists...."It is a tough impulse to fight, but I am with you on this sentiment!
Liz M wrote: "No, the specific title must be listed. Also, when I used control-f to search the page you linked, there is no mention of "Narnia" or "Lewis".Fair enough, Liz. As to the mention of Narnia, I found that podcast through the book index on Books on the Nightstand, which lists, "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Narnia)" with a link to podcast #229. The book is not listed on the page, but "Narnia" is mentioned in the podcast in a section on books made into movies.
Are we allowed to use new podcasts as they are posted during the challenge as long as the books are found on a list?

I'm still back and forth on this one, and I'd like Liz to weigh in on what I'm thinking:
1) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe seems to be one of the books that was mentioned in passing on Books on the Nightstand and thus shows up in the book index compiled by a friend of the show, but the hosts did not add it to the show notes. I am inclined to only allow books that are in the show notes associated with the specific episode; that would mean that not every book in the index will work, and the episode notes must be verified.
2) I did find the entire Chronicles of Narnia mentioned here: http://bookrageous.podbean.com/e/book.... It's a little more precise than your find of "Narnia" mentioned in passing, but it isn't a specific book. In most previous challenges (and for canon, etc.) we usually take the approach that a single book qualifies if the entire series is listed, but this may be different. This is a weird one since it's so often sold as one volume.
Liz, what do you think?
Karen Michele wrote: "Are we allowed to use new podcasts as they are posted during the challenge as long as the books are found on a list?"I'll let Liz confirm, but I believe so.
We went back and forth on how to narrow it down - by podcast or by date - and chose the list of podcasts, so later episodes should qualify. The moderators won't be scanning every single podcast for new (or old, for that matter) show notes though - you'll have to find your own combos :)
Cory Day wrote: " I am inclined to only allow books that are in the show notes associated with the specific episode; that would mean that not every book in the index will work, and the episode notes must be verified...."I agree with this. While I am incredibly impressed that the fans of this podcast have compiled such a comprehensive database, to simplify score-keeping the scope of the task was deliberately limited to the titles that were the focus of the podcasts and "important" enough to be included in the episode summary.
Cory Day wrote: "In most previous challenges (and for canon, etc.) we usually take the approach that a single book qualifies if the entire series is listed, but this may be different...."
Unfortunately, I am not going to allow every book in a series if only the series title is referenced. We allow it with list based tasks because the number of series is finite and defined before the start of the challenge and we can control how much work is involved. For example, it took me almost an hour just to prepare the Discworld series to be included into the database for 20.4-Guardian.
We knew this task was unusual and doesn't fit the usual methods we use in score-keeping. But it is such a fun idea and I hoped you all would enjoy poking around the various podcasts and seeing what books are being talked about as much as I have!
Cory Day wrote: "We went back and forth on how to narrow it down - by podcast or by date - and chose the list of podcasts, so later episodes should qualify...."Yes, later podcasts qualify. :)
Can I get confirmation on Beyond the Highland Mist? It's mentioned here: http://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/20...Also, is anyone else having issues with the Bookrageous Podcast website?
Can we use the buy, borrow or bypass column off the book riot page? I found some books I want to read in that section.
Rebekah wrote: "I'm finding the book index on the BOTN not working."It looks like the index is broken. But I was able to use the 'Search' field. I entered an author's name, or book title and pulled up podcast episodes. Just note that it will pull up podcasts with ANY word in the title. :-)

Yeah, the index was working the last time I checked, but not when I just went to it. If it's still broken in a couple of days I'll let them know - it may just be being edited since a new episode just came out.
Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Can we use the buy, borrow or bypass column off the book riot page? I found some books I want to read in that section."Unfortunately, no. The Buy, Borrow, Bypass column is part of the blog. Only entries like http://bookriot.com/2015/03/09/book-r... will work. They'll say "The Book Riot Podcast" and have an episode number. For Dear Book Nerd, they'll say "Dear Book Nerd #..."
Using the Books on the Nightshelf index, I found that Elsewhere by Richard Russo was included in podcast #207: It’s great to give *and* receive!, however, instead of listing books in the summary of the episode, they linked to a separate BOTNS Holiday Gift Guide. Is this acceptable?

So this task has got me listening to podcasts for the first time, and I'm really enjoying them a lot! Now instead of just looking for podcasts which cover my tbr books, I am learning about new ones and adding them to my already very long list. Very fun:-)
Jama wrote: "So this task has got me listening to podcasts for the first time, and I'm really enjoying them a lot! Now instead of just looking for podcasts which cover my tbr books, I am learning about new one..."I'm so glad! I love them so much, and not just book ones!
If any of you podcast experts come across a reference to either Girl in the Dark or After Birth, I'd love if you'd let me know…I just finished GITD and just started After Birth but can't seem to find a place in the spring challenge for either of them. I've searched the linked podcasts and also don't find a reference to either, but I'm not sure if I'm doing my searches right. If anyone comes across either of these in one of the podcasts, I would really appreciate a heads up. Thanks everyone!
Claire wrote: "If any of you podcast experts come across a reference to either Girl in the Dark or After Birth, I'd love if you'd let me know…I just finished GITD and just started ..."I didn't really recall either of them from a podcast, and did a quick search to confirm. However, since they're relatively new, they may yet be discussed. If I hear about either on future episodes I'll let you know!
Do you remember this one on any podcasts? I know it's been on Book Riot, but I don't remember if I saw it on any podcast lists. I can't find any other place where it would count:H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald
Thanks for your help, Cory!

Sorry, nothing clicked. Like you said, Book Riot the site mentioned it, but not the podcast.
Unfortunately, I listen to way more podcasts than we ended up listing, so sometimes a book will sound familiar but I've heard it or read it elsewhere...

Thanks for finding this, Christine!
Karen Michele wrote: "Hi Cory,Can you think of a podcast that included The Bees by Laline Paull?"
I knew Simon had mentioned it on the Readers, but it was in reference to his other podcast. I knew I'd heard it elsewhere though - here you go!
