9. Read a book where a word in the title contains kiss - may be imbedded.

I can recommend Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins. It's a fairytale collection with familier stories ith much more satisfying endings than the originals. It's a quick read.

Sam (ecowitch) | 2373 comments Task 3 query: Read a book whose cover is 75% dark red.

Would either of these count as dark red enough?
The Zoo by Christopher Wilson or All the Beautiful Lies by Peter Swanson

message 6: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments Both, but I think the second one has more red coverage. Did you check Tineye?

message 7: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Dec 31, 2022 10:23AM) (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments You can find the tineye color extractor here: http://labs.tineye.com/color/ Be sure to uncheck the box that says to exclude background colors.

A quick check for those two books found that the first book (zoo) is 63.9% red and the second is 60.4% red.

message 8: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2373 comments I've never heard of tineye so thanks for the link Kristie.
And based on that, I need more red...

message 9: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2373 comments Hi Janice, how precise does the 75% need to be? The best option I've got is What If?2 Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe which despite looking very red only comes out at 73.1% red according to tineye. Is that close enough to be acceptable?

message 10: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments That's close enough, Sam.

Phew! Thanks Janice :-)

message 12: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments Sometimes tineye can be so weird. If I look at that cover I would have guessed more like 98% red! Sheesh.

message 13: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4530 comments When I checked tineye that cover came out almost 95% red if you add all the red tones together.

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments And that's perfectly okay to add the colours together. Otherwise, we'd really be hooped on a lot of books.

message 15: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments I see that too, Katrisa. I'm guessing that Sam forgot to uncheck the "exclude background colors" boxes. With that checked it would come out a lot lower. That makes much more sense.

message 16: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2373 comments Thanks all. I did add all the reds together to get the 73% but didn't spot the exclude background colours box. Wonder if that ends up merging the pinks in with the reds too?

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Jan 03, 2023 05:56AM) (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments If you look at the picture next to the breakdown it will show you what it is including. It doesn't merge them, just doesn't include the background as if it's not there at all. I don't know why that's the default.

message 18: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments Janice, is this considered dark red? Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #2) by Holly Jackson I was going to use the book for my cursive prompt, but the only copies I could get don't have the right font.

I currently have Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #2) by Holly Jackson , but I think it's a little shy on the red because of the white strips. I can get the audio Good Girl, Bad Blood (A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, #2) by Holly Jackson , but tineye calls the outside part brown.

I'm going to try to find the first copy, but didn't want to put too much effort in if it's not dark enough.

message 19: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments I think that's dark enough. :)

message 20: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments Thanks! Now to see if I can find it...lol

message 21: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1553 comments Task: Read a book whose cover is 75% dark red

Is the red shade of The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory acceptable for this task?
As per TinEye, it is 75.3% (62.5+9.3+3.5) red and it fits the '75%' part of the task.

Thanks.

Kabrada | 278 comments Would this work for the dark red?
The Crow Trap (Vera Stanhope, #1) by Ann Cleeves

TinEye splits it into brown (78,1 %) and red (15,9 %), but the layered impression is dark red.

ETA: Never mind, I have another edition that definitely isn't red...

message 25: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments I ran into that same issue with my book above. Tineye called the version I have brown. Fortunately, Janice is allowing books that are very red so they don't need to be that dark, just not light I think.

message 26: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments That's right, Kristie.

message 27: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 278 comments Thank you both.

I'll be on the lookout for another red book then.

Kristie | 19488 comments Just wanted to recommend We Are the Brennans to anyone looking for a book that features a bar. Her family owns a pub and there is a lot of focus on the business as well as scenes in the bar.

message 29: by Kabrada (last edited Jan 14, 2023 02:29PM) (new)

Kabrada | 278 comments I started on the audio book of Magpie Murders; the cover is considered by TinEye to be 90.9 % red - not dark red but very red, so it should work:
Magpie Murders (Susan Ryeland, #1) by Anthony Horowitz

message 30: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments Go ahead.

message 31: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 278 comments Thank you, Janice.

message 32: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19488 comments I have that one on my list of options too, Kabrada. It is my lightest one, along with You Slay Me, but I thought it would be red enough. Thanks for confirming, Janice.

message 34: by Laura (Lclwags) (new)

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I came here to ask if Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward would work. It's 84% red on Tiny Eye, but all the different shades are just called red. Now I may use Magpie Murders (Susan Ryeland, #1) by Anthony Horowitz since I just recent bought a copy.

message 35: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60371 comments If you own Dark Lover, it is a darker red and fits the criteria better. Having said that, I have approved Magpie Murders, so it's really up to you.

message 36: by Laura (Lclwags) (last edited Jan 17, 2023 08:56AM) (new)

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments Thanks Janice! I don't own Dark Lover, but my library has it in audio book which is my preferred anyway! Same cover is shown for the audio edition.

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I kind of struggle with the exact definition of an unreliable narrator, but I think I'm listening to one right now. The story is from the MCs perspective and he keeps commenting about why would someone say that, it's not true. He's remembering things from the night his mom went missing and I'm pretty sure his memories are wrong. Turns out he has memory issues from a head injury in a car accident. Does this make him an unreliable narrator?

Sounds like it would be. Google "Books with Unreliable Narrators". I did that, and found some interesting titles.

Fiona | 1167 comments Would you consider this dark red? Tineye says exactly 90% red but I'm not sure if it's dark enough:
Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward

Edit: Should've read the comments in which you already mentioned it Janice, my bad!

Fiona,
Did you read this? I just finished it and was disappointed. I ended up listening at 1.5 speed to get it over sooner.
