Viji | 1519 comments Need book suggestions for the task:
Read a book that is tagged as "play"

I found that a novel has also been tagged as 'play" in the MPG section. Got a bit confused.

message 5: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19337 comments I'm a little confused by your question, Viji. Did you find a book or did you need help?

The first thing that came to mind for me is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two. It has "plays" as a main page genre. If you click on "plays," it will bring you to this page: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/plays You can see a lot of options there. Just check to be sure it is on the main book page of the specific book you are interested in.

You can always do that with main page genres. If you find one book with the tag, click on the tag and it will bring you to a similar page.

The first thing that came to mind for me is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two and I presumed it to be a novel. When I saw this and Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald The Original Screenplay (Fantastic Beasts The Original Screenplay, #2) by J.K. Rowling have been categorized as MPG: Plays, I was a bit confused. Your clarification has really helped me.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am having a mental problem with "alien" in task 5. The only kind I can think of are space aliens and people (humans) we politically define as "illegal" aliens. Then you say that there may be angles/demons. How do they enter into things as aliens without being fantasy?

message 8: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 31, 2022 12:54AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments The one that springs to mind for me, Cherie, is Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.

Aziraphale and Crowley are an angel and a demon respectively, but they are very much in our world. It's not say, Middle Earth or another made up world. They are running through current day (okay 80s) UK.

Janice may correct if I am wrong, but that's how I see what she meant by "May not be a fantasy world"

I LOVED that book. It was hilarious and thought provoking at the same time.

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments I was thinking of aliens as other life forms from space. Rusalka is right - the angels or demons may have been sent to earth to interact, but if they are in their own realm, it's likely they are in fantasy worlds.

message 13: by Ayacchi (new)

Ayacchi | 1731 comments I heard that Project Hail Mary has alien in it?

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments Yes, it does.

message 15: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments My original choice for the 'alien' task was The Humans by Matt Haig .

I read The Belial Rebirth (The Belial Rebirth #1) by R.D. Brady for one of the tasks in Road Trip challenge. It is set in earth and spans from the WWII to current days and time travel to the future. It is about rebirth of the Fallen Angel Azazael and the leader of a government agency (as well as the ring bearer of the Angels on earth) trying to eliminate him. There are 4 more books in the series. The next book in the series is The Belial Spear (The Belial Rebirth) by R.D. Brady . Would this book work for the 'a significant character is an alien' task?

message 16: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments I'm not sure, Viji. It sounds like Rebirth would have been, but I'm not sure about Spear and how much of the angel will be in it. Sometimes, books in series can focus of different people.

Thanks, Janice. I plan to read this for another task which needs a book to be read from 5 primary works series. Will it be alright, if I find some kind of Fallen Angel or something similar to that in the book playing a significant role, to use this for the 'alien' task?

message 19: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks everyone, for the info.
I was talking to AmyK yesterday and she mentioned Good Omens to me for the angles/demons idea. I just couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a fantasy world. She also pointed out that Superman was an alien. I have a Clark Kent book that I picked for a challenge several years ago and never read.

message 20: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Esther - I have the Matt Hail book in my TBR list. 😊

Margo - your book sounds like it may fit the “plot twists” task for me. I was scratching my head over that one too. 🤓

Margo | 11675 comments Cherie, I think it would at that!

Jayme | 4580 comments Hi Janice -
For task: Read a book where a significant character is an alien (may be angels/demons too). May not be a fantasy world - would you except The World We Make? The enemy is an alien life form from the metauniverse and the story takes place in New York City.

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Viji | 1519 comments Task: Read a book where a significant character is an alien

Would You Slay Me work for this task? The synopsis in the Book Main Page of GR reads as follows:

"funny romance that pits Seattle-based Aisling Grey against Drake Vireo, a seriously handsome Parisian dragon in human form. In her job as courier, Aisling is to deliver a precious demonic artifact to a Mme. Deauxville in Paris, but she finds Madame freshly dead, surrounded by a circle of ash. The artifact is then stolen by the fast-talking Drake, who claims that Aisling is no mere courier but in fact a demon lord and his destined mate. Determined to play detective, Aisling summons up a demon only to find herself saddled with one, in the form of a slobbering Newfoundland who wants to go walkies."

Thanks.

The task reads: Read a book where a significant character is an alien (may be angels/demons too). May not be a fantasy world.

The book is set on earth, and there are demons. You don't need an approval for this book.

Thanks a lot, Janice. I was not sure about this book and hence checked with you. Now, I could read the book for this task.

Katrisa | 4503 comments For the Alien task can it be set on a spaceship or do you consider that a fantasy world?

message 35: by Katrisa (last edited Jan 17, 2023 05:01PM) (new)

Katrisa | 4503 comments I was thinking of either the Wayfarer series
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet or Space Opera

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments No, sorry. It must be a car, not a van or a truck.

message 40: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4503 comments I thought that might be the case. I have just been going through my audible and chirp libraries trying to find books I own that will work. I am surprised at how hard a car is to find! I figured with my like 1500 books I would have one with a car! :)

message 41: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60101 comments I'm sorry you're having trouble finding a car. I have several, but the book I'm going to read is The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion
The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg

This is the audiobook edition.

message 42: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Jan 29, 2023 09:00AM) (new)

Kristie | 19337 comments I think I have quite a few. The first few that came to mind for me were:

The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane Off the Map (Beck Sisters, #3) by Trish Doller

There's another one that involves an older woman who goes on a road trip, but I can't think of the name of it at the moment.

Flash Flood Dan Mahoney Mysteries, Book 1 by Susan Slater

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Lost in a Good Book (Thursday Next, #2) by Jasper Fforde is the one I am going to use for the car task, but I have already read the first book.

The Last Dragonslayer (The Last Dragonslayer, #1) by Jasper Fforde and The Eye of Zoltar (The Last Dragonslayer, #3) by Jasper Fforde are also good choices. I loved the characters in this series. I am still waiting for the 4th book to be written/published - someday. ;o)
