Elise | 4 comments I'm not too certain on the author's gender, but it was definitely published sometime between 2015-2021 in English.

Everything I remember:
The story is written from two POVS, the MC and some sort of government institution that tries to prove the MC incorrect, leaving a lot of gaps for the reader to guess the pieces and make up their own variation of the ending.
I believe it was a post-apocalyptic world that the main character grows up in, mostly in harsh circumstances, such as moving around with a group of girls that are all fighting to survive, until some sort of society or gang comes and breaks them up. The MC is than arrested, but escapes (multiple times, I think) and runs off to a farm that is taking in and feeding people. They're all philosophers and scientists that have nightly chats about what they learned that day or debate about something. The head of that group then becomes one of the founders of the new political system later on in the timeline.
I'm not too sure what happens next, since the book was split into two or three parts and I only remember the beginning and the end, but I believe towards the ending she gets her own institution to study people. Not sure why. I know that she is now married to her wife and works so much that their relationship dissolves. She has a co-worker nicknamed "Rose," who gets her this institution in the forest, and the MC makes an agreement with Rose. Basically, Rose will fund the institution as long as she gets her own secret underground ward, and the MC won't poke her nose into any of her business.
So the MC begins to poke her nose into Rose's business. She sends a mole down there with a tape recorder to figure out what's happening, and the mole slowly dissolves into insanity as she describes vividly the violent tests that she is subjected too, such as having her eyelids taped open while they flashed bright images at her. The MC decides Rose is crazy, and leaves the institution, holing up somewhere with all her evidence of Rose's betrayal. The Government POV then proceeds to describe how the MC was probably going crazy, and that there was no such institution, leaving the ending up to the reader to decide.
And that's where it ends. Hope this helps! Let's try our best ;)
