Just opening up this discussion - hard to believe that we are already on the 9th Maigret book!
Who is reading this one? I've borrowed it from the library but haven't started as yet.

I am not reading the Maigrets - too many books! - but I have been watching the series, and remember this one as being on recently. So I will be following the discussion with interest.I think the TV series followed the plots fairly closely.
Is that the old series with Rupert Davies, Rosina? I've been recording those from Talking Pictures and trying to watch episodes after I read the book, and I agree they usually follow the plots.
I will be reading this but won’t be starting for a week or so as I’m going to read the Gervase Fen one first

This is included in the kindle book I bought so will be reading it eventually. I like Maigret; reads easily in a single evening.
I've started this now and am enjoying it so far - Simenon always seems to jump straight into the story and the books are really varied. Interesting to see how quick Maigret is to give up his usual holiday as soon as a friend asks him to do some extra detective work.

It was indeed a photograph, a picture of a woman. But the face was completely hidden, scribbled all over in red ink. Someone had tried to obliterate the head, someone very angry. The pen had bitten into the paper. There were so many criss-crossed lines that not a single square millimetre had been left visible.
On the other hand, below the head, the torso had not been touched. A pair of large breasts. A light-coloured silk dress, very tight and very low cut.
Sailors don't talk much to other men, especially not to policemen. But after Captain Fallut's body is found floating near his trawler, they all mention the Evil Eye when they speak of the Ocean's voyage.
Please do not post spoilers in this thread. Thank you.
