Hello Team Sugar Gliders!I'm so excited to for UNO about to start and to get to know you all a little bit more. I'm Annalisa and this is my 7th year playing and my 3rd year as a captain. Please feel free to ask any questions you have as I remember my first year was a little confusing.
I’m going to be sending out friend requests to all of you. Please accept those. It makes it a lot easier for me to check your books throughout the month. You may also want to send friend requests to the rest of the team as it will make it much easier to find reverse cards.
Please introduce your self in your first post. Let us know if this is your first time playing UNO or if you have played before, where you are from, and what you genres you enjoy reading. You can also post a few favorite reads and if you feel like it the worst book you read last year. (I always find it really interesting to see what people hate.) Also, somewhere in that post please post a link to your Uno shelf.
I’m from the mountains of Western North Carolina in the US.
I enjoy reading historical romance, fantasy, science fiction, and scifi romance. I’m pretty much willing to read any genre although I’m not much for horror.
Some of my favorite books last year were:
This book goes over skills for negotiation but they can also help with everyday difficult conversations. Also, some great advice I've used at work for when conversations outside parties you work with stop getting back to you.
I read the entire series and loved it. If you haven't read it I would highly recommend it.
Another Series. I started this on a car trip. Murderbot is such a unique character and I adore these stories. They are fun and the audiobooks are amazing.
This novel started out a bit slow for me but the story after the characters were introduced was engaging. I wasn't surprised by the ending at all but I did love it. My least favorite book was:
Controversial I know. There are a few reasons why this book was the worst book of 2022 for me, but I'll start with what bothered me the most, which was that it completely ignored the fact that the coast of North Carolina is about 6 hours from the mountains today. We have highways now that would not have been the case in the 60s. So putting Asheville in the story, and as frequently as it showed up, was so ridiculous. It felt like a name drop. Also in the 60s and 70s Asheville was not the place it is today so it would not have been the place it was in the novel. I live in the state and am familiar with all the real locations mentioned in the novel (some were fictional) and this lack of understanding of the state during the time when it was set just bothered me. Also, the ending was just not for me. There were times when the novel was beautiful, so I understand why so many people loved it. I really did not though. Hi fellow team Sugar Gliders! As a person that loves sweets and baking, our team name is a good fit for me. Now if I could learn to fly! I am Felicity and this is my third year playing UNO and my first year being co-captain. I live in Ohio and am a caregiver for my disabled husband and my tabby cat, Tiger. We have a 20 year old daughter who is away at college.
I enjoy reading Thrillers, Mysteries, Science Fiction, Chick-lit, General Fiction, some Historical Fiction and I try to get in more Non-Fiction every year. I am in 4 book clubs and one online challenge so some books I read are outside my regular genres.
Some of my favorites last year were:
Speculative fiction- what would you do if you knew how long you would live and how would that effect society.
. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a favorite author and this featured another strong but flawed female character. Fun to read during Wimbledon last year.
Probably on everyone's best list. Funny quirky story about sexual bias in the 60s in the science world. The Brighton Mysteries by Elly Griffiths. The first one is
. This a fun series that starts in the fifties with protagonists that were part of a WWII group who were called the Magic Men who were tasked into fooling the Nazi's during battle. After the war, one is a police officer, who solves crimes with the help of his friend, a magician. Interesting history and wry humor make these interesting reads. There are 6 of them so far.A book I disliked reading recently was
I usually really like time travel but this was dull. I only finished it because I had to read it for a book club. Here is my UNO shelf:https://www.goodreads.com/review/list....
I am really looking forward to getting to know all of you. I think you are all new to me. I will be sending friend requests to you all soon.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Hello Team Sugar Glider, This is my first time playing UNO but it sounds fun. I enjoy reading anything paranormal. I also enjoy mysteries, cozy and police procedurals. I love science fiction and the occasional horror book.
My uno shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
My favorites from last year were:
One book I really did not like was:
Welcome Joyce. I read The Traveling Cat Chronicles last year too. It was sad but in a good way. I've been considering The Book of Cold Cases and I might pick it up for one of our reverses if my library has it.
Hi everyone! I'm Nicole Early (I see we have two Nicoles!). I live in Kansas City Missouri but am originally from Buffalo NY. This will be my 6th year playing Uno.My favorite genres are historical fiction and fantasy, but I have really been enjoying magical realism lately.
Book links are down for me at the moment, but I am currently reading Fairy Tale by Stephen King and really enjoying it.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Welcome Joyce and Nicole. I really loved The Midnight Library both times I read it, Joyce.Maybe we should call you Nicole E to differentiate. Or another nickname?
Hi Team. I am Ann from Rochester NY. This is my 4th year playing Uno. Uno is my favorite goodreads challenge!!!
Hi everyone! My name is Angela and I live in Illinois near Chicago. This is my first Uno challenge so I am sure I will have questions but I am looking forward to playing with you all. My favorite genres are romance and mystery/ thriller. I also enjoy some non-fiction, literary fiction and historical fiction.
My favorite books from 2022 include Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan, Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister, Sadie by Courtney Summers, The Woman He Loved Before by Dorothy Koomson, Reprieve by James Han Mattson and The Last Housewife by Ashley Winstead.

Hi all. Just doing a quick check in to say hi. I'll be sure to post more soon!I'm Carrie from PA and have played Uno several times now!
Hey All!I started writing a post yesterday, and but then for some reason it wouldn't post so I'm trying again today.
So my name is Jen, I am from Edmonton, Alberta Canada. This is I think my 6th year doing this challenge, and I always enjoy it.
Let's see I work full time as a Quality Assurance Analyst, other than reading in my spare time I train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, so it all keeps me fairly busy.
I was trying to think of some of my favourite books that I read from last year and I think The Lunar Chronicles (series) ended up being a favourite, as well as Gallant by V.E. Schwab, was a great read but I generally love most of her books. There were several others but that's all I can think of for now.
Oh and here is a link to my shelf uno-2023
Hi Jen,Welcome to the team. I just loved The Invisible Life of Addie Larue but have never read anything else by V. E. Schwab. I am not a big fantasy reader but the book just hooked me and I thought was so clever and unputdownable. Is there another book of hers you would recommend?
She definitely tends to lean towards fantasy type of books, but if I had to recommend one it might be Vicious just because this one is more of a mix of genres. Felicity wrote: "Hi Jen,

My shelf link: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...Hi all. This is my 5th year playing UNO. It's definitely one of my favorite team challenges.
My favorite genres include mystery, thriller, horror and Nordic Noir. I'll read just about anything however.
Some of my favorite reads last year:
- really makes you think about life
- I love anything that I've read by Kingfisher
- Highly recommend!
and
- interesting spins on the idea of true crime storiesI'm married and have a 25 year old daughter who is an OR nurse. I have 1 dog (Westie that's 15) and 3 cats. I love to travel and was lucky enough to have lived in Italy for 3 years and had the chance to see a lot of places in Europe. I love to do puzzles and read of course!
Looking forward to working with you all on this round of UNO!
I wasn't sure when you wanted us to start claiming colored covers but I would like to do for a blue cover 4
I get my books from the library, so I have to plan my TBR in advance since I usually end up having to request the books (just as a heads up). It seems like most books work for most tasks, but when we get to the end of the month and most of the hands are completed, I am assuming the books picked would need to be more specific to work. I am new to this, so I suppose I will figure it our as we go.
I was going to wait to claim cards until we got closer but I don't think it is a problem now. I have books I plan to read that would match the 6Blue, the 3Green and the 5Red. I will probably start with
and claim the 6 Blue because that is the book I want to read first. I would only do one or both of the other two if no-one else claims them. We are taking the easy ones first, lol. It's funny how many books have blue covers.

I'll put you down for the Blue 4. Later on you can still read whatever you want, but there may be a few were we need a specific card covered.

Hi Team! I am absolutely loving the name this year!My name is Ashley, I’m (almost) 30, a mom of three, and from NJ. I can read almost all genres but my favorites are anything YA, mystery, thriller, dystopian, and some horror mixed in there too. I’m not a huge fantasy fan, but there are some I love.
This is my third year playing Uno, second year with our awesome captain 😊 and I look forward to it every year now, it’s a lot of fun!
One question I did have, does the rule still apply where as long as a book is listed in Goodreads it can be read? I only ask because since the last time I played, I’ve created a book blog and get a ton of advanced reader copies. I was wondering if those can be used for this if they’re on Goodreads.
Some of my favorite reads of last year were:
There aren’t many books that I don’t end up liking honestly, but here are two that ended up on my “not a fan” shelf:
And my controversial one that everyone seemed to love besides me:
Here is my Uno shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
I am looking forward to playing with all of you!
Also, I’m not sure if this is red enough, but if it is I can use it for our Red 2 card:
Welcome Ashley! I think your book is red enough to work. As for your advance reader copies (which I miss from the time I worked at a bookstore) I know a lot of future books show up on Goodreads before they are published. I was on a team with a librarian for Goodreads and she said you could request a book be added to Goodreads so that might be an option if the book isn't on it.
Hi, Team Sugar Glider! My name is Nicole K. I’m excited to be here; it’s my first year participating in the UNO team challenge!
I’m from Massachusetts and live with my boyfriend and cat. I also just started a new job which should allow me some much-needed free time so I’m hoping I’ll be able to read more often. I love reading mostly fiction- historical, contemporary, suspense/mystery, classics, romance.
Looking forward to getting to know you all :)

Jenny here, finally! I am so happy that my posts are coming through now :-) This is my second Uno Challenge and I am excited! I live in Ohio with my husband and Yorkie doggie. I have two adult kids. One of my favorite books of 2022 was Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Looking forward to this!
Yay Jenny! Nice to see your post. I too really liked Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow. I am in Cincinnati- where are you?

I'm not sure it is yellow enough. I wonder if we should ask in the captain's group? I'll let Annalisa answer what she thinks.

Sorry I don't think this is Yellow enough.
Please feel free to claim any color cards if you have a book that fits. We have a few that have been claimed but if you have one that fits something please let us know. If you aren't sure about a cover being over 50% of the color you can ask here and we will vote as a team on that.
