Hi Vicky, I swore I was going to cut down on my challenges this year.. But can't resist a team challenge. Especially an easy going one. So, I'll join you...
Hello! I would like to join the team too. As I just mentioned in the Q&A thread, I've got some busy days coming up so I'm not really going to be in a position to help set things up for at least a few days, but I will be able to check this thread regularly on my phone. I was hoping to read a range of books this year anyway so this will help with that. I will read pretty much any genre although I prefer books with a bit of action or mystery to them and tend to stear away from nonfiction, but I'm not opposed to reading one occasionally.
Lisa! Hi! Good to have you. I know the feeling of trying to cut back - I got overly ambitious on Buddy Reads for January LOL It's a problem (but at least it's a fun problem!)Keely - No worries! I made a copy of the spreadsheet and can spin some monsters after work to get us started. I just found out they're cutting the overtime we've been doing for the last year so I have some extra time.
I'm thinking we can go ahead and get started and we'll keep the team open to see if anyone else wants to join. I'm thinking 5-6 of us would be a fun sweet spot, thoughts?
I think 5 or 6 people would be good. Would make it a bit more relaxed if life makes things difficult for some of us and searching for books should be easier if there are several of us checking. I'm planning to focus on some shorter books this month before Uno starts. Being almost constantly in team challenges has meant those books too short to count have just been sat there. That said, I don't mind reading one or two longer books this month if they are something that have been sitting on my TBR list for a long time and would fit several tasks.
I just had a thought... is there a minimum page count for this? I dont remember seeing one, but I also didn't look that close as I remembered most of the rules from Tower. If there isn't then we may be able to use some of my short books for the odd task.I think I need to take a closer look at the rules again. Maybe I don't remember them as well as I thought.
The page count is the first task (or the monsters hit points) so different monsters have different page requirements. Looks like the range is anywhere from 100-800+.
Vicky - The page count is only one part of the monsters. For the other tasks to vanquish it, it looks like we can use any books that have any pages count. So for example, if someone read a book that covered all over tasks but "find fig in the text" and someone read a book that was a different page range with fig in the text, we can still use it. It was answered in the Q&As that there is no page limit on books to help us complete the tasks.
Natasha & Laila - we are still looking for teammates so you are both welcome to join :)
Keely - You're right! This is why I shouldn't try to rush and answer questions on my break at work... I never think it through. LOL I'm also taking Judith's response to mean that graphic novels/poetry/plays/children's books are probably fair game too. Natasha and Laila - Yes, welcome! We'd love to have you!
Do we want to pick a team name? Or a monster mascot? Or both? I'm terribly uncreative when it comes to these things.
I did spin us some monsters and got us a spreadsheet going (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...), feel free to hit the request access button or message me your email address and I'll add everyone.
Also I put some links in the top few posts - if there's anything else you'd like to see linked/added there for ease of access let me know!
Thanks Vicky, email for access sent. Thanks, got access now. 😊Marauding Monsters makes me think of that old song Monster Mash by the Groovie Ghoulies. So maybe something along those lines for our name?
I'm really not good with coming up with names either. I'll be happy to go with whatever. I've begun my travels for the day. I have a total of three flights, but have already completed one. I'm in Norway as I visited my boyfriend and his family for Christmas but it is time to return home to the UK. The first flight was only about half an hour and I listened to part of a short audiobook. The next flight is about an hour long and then the final one is around 2 hours. Geographically the distance isnt that much, but due to where my boyfriend lives and where I live, this is the easiest way to get between the two places.
I have several hours gaps between flights as I like to allow time for any delays or problems. This means I should be able to get some reading done although I may end up watching a film or two to try and pass time.
I will definitely finish the audiobook I have already started and maybe another shorter one during the actual flights. I would like to get an ebook done as well. I doubt my books will help much with any monsters but they might help make a start.
I have a book that I started on January 1st and will finish today that fits some tasks. I couldn't find an official start date for the challenge though. For a monster mascot, the rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail comes to mind.

Ooh.. I like Monster Mashers.
Laila Jane wrote: "Would you consider Hades, the Greek god, royalty?"I would, he's King of the Underworld.
Hey Lisa, I could be wrong but I believe a book can only be used for one monster. You've put Hidden Scars in for the Bull and Hydra. As far as I remember, we can use a book for multiple tasks on the same monster, but not for multiple tasks over more than one monster.
Keely wrote: "Hey Lisa, I could be wrong but I believe a book can only be used for one monster. You've put Hidden Scars in for the Bull and Hydra. As far as I remember, we can use a book for multiple tasks on th..."Ooh, Thanks for the pickup. I'll go and fix the spreadsheet now.
I finished a second book today - it's not a HUGE help but it's better than nothing. I'm going to take some time this weekend to see what I have to actually target some tasks! Also I've been playing around with a separate copy of the spreadsheet (because I can never just leave a spreadsheet alone) and I've figured out how to get it to autofill tasks. I'm still playing around with a few other things so I'll let you know when I update it!
I also finished my second book last night. It was very short and I doubt it will help with many tasks. I have a day off tomorrow so I am planning on getting some stuff organised, including taking a closer look at these monsters and planning some books.
Sorry for the late reply, I've been working all week. I believe we said we would have up to 6 and we currently have 5 so I'd say you are free to join. You'll have to request access to the spreadsheet which Vicky is in charge of I think.
Jaqueline wrote: "Hello, if ya'll still have room I'd like to join too, I know I'm probably a little late"Welcome, Jaqueline. We have a full team of Monster Mashers. 😊
I promise I will read more soon. All I seem to do at the moment is work and sleep. I hope you are all well.
I finished Slave to Sensation which finishes the Manticore. I spun the monster wheel and got Sirens, but where do we find the tasks for the monsters?
thanks, Lisa! I was typing up a post about it last night and apparently I forgot to post it? It's been a wild work week and a half and my brain is mush LOLThe only real functional change is that the monster name is now a drop down and when a monster is selected it will auto fill the tasks in. Super easy! The rest is all cosmetic.
I added the notes column so we can make note of any book options that we might have coming up that will work - I'm kind of envisioning it as a "hey I plan on reading this sometime soon but if someone else reads something that fits sooner, that's cool too."
Also - there's a novella called Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant that fits all 5 tasks for the Sirens. I read it for Tower Teams or I'd read it again - if anyone is interested in picking that up it would be an easy kill!
Wow, that's amazing that one little book fits the whole category. I was happy to read it but it's not available to me in kindle only if I sign up to audible. And I like to read not listen.. so I'll have to pass. Maybe someone else can grab it. Thanks for the heads up Vicky anyway.
I'm afraid I don't have access to that book. And I promise I'm still alive. I've been weirdly busy and haven't been reading so much. I am dedicating myself to reading more and will finish a book today that qualifies for a task.
Oops, I lied - Rolling in the Deep works for 4/5 tasks. It doesn't have a rope on the cover. Still really good though!
I'm excited for new monsters too. I just added a book that finished another monster, so I will spin the Asian wheel!
I'm not sure what's worse - the 800+ page bracket or the 100 to 175 bracket. I'm going to have to look into my Kindle library and see what novellas I could read quick!
Oh, that's exciting. New monster.Just a quick question. Author name starts with P N or G? Is that the first or last name, or either?
I have a book that will fit the 800+ task, but I won't be able to get to it for at least another week or two.For the author name starts with P, N, or G - I'm assuming either first or last name would work?
For future reference, are we repeating monsters or trying to hit each monster once before we're done with the challenge?
Yeah, I believe the letters are for either name.I don't really know what the end goal is. Keep going until we've had enough?
I will be reading more next month and when I have time and energy, I'll try and plan some books that fit several tasks. I'm taking part in UNO over in the Perks group so I'll mostly be reading books for tasks there, but I'm sure there will be some cross-over.
I'm doing the Uno challenge too! It's one of my favorite team challenges! I will probably be doing the same - focusing on books that fit the tasks there and just filling in what happens to fit here.
