Seagull Books publishes world literature in English translation, serious non-fiction, culture studies, performance studies, art and cinema, with attention to exquisite design and world-class production.

Seagull Books was founded by Naveen Kishore in 1982 as an independent Indian publishing house specializing in serious books on art, theatre and cinema. It published plays by major Indian playwrights, monographs and essays by leading Indian artists, filmscripts from the best-known Indian and European filmmakers, along with academic titles on culture, society and the various arts.

Since 2005, Seagull Books London Limited has ventured into newer fields of publishing, including English translations of fiction and non-fiction by major African, European, Asian and Latin American writers. It now boasts of a backlist of over 500 titles. Beginning with authors such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, Roland Barthes, Jorge Luis Borges, Theodor W. I was surprised to see we didn’t have a thread for Seagull Press.

I just received Twilight of Torment: Melancholy, which is described as volume 1, do we know when volume 2 will be published?

I am keen on exploring the literature of the different languages of India, but I am looking forward to reading the various languages of Africa.

Oh, good. That only 6 months away. Maybe I’ll shift from Indian lit to African lit in June.

Bernhard fans couldn’t wait for a book to go on sale before they buy it unfortunately. There is a new set of plays coming out in November so will see if can get those on preorder.

Though seems a rather odd thing - you can preorder but they will only tell you what postage is when it's sent in October. And it's sent from US which seems a bit inefficient given they have a London branch.

Is it published by Univ of Chicago?

Published by Seagull but distributed by the University of Chicago Press. I think U of C has worldwide distribution rights outside India.

That explains US to UK.
