This book has an interesting premise, that of a young Israeli man who has just finished his compulsory military service volunteering for extra missions. Whilst there were parts about this book that I really liked, there were quite a few sections that were overly long, and that I got bogged down in and wasn’t quite sure what point Grossman was trying to make, such as the parts recounting Ora’s sons as children. The bits of the book that really made an impression on me were in the final 100 pages, which really highlighted the reality of living in Israel, not just in raising a family in the knowledge that the children will be serving a military that is often involved in wars and operations, but also with in living with the knowledge and fear that even on a bus or on their children’s walks to school, they may not be safe from bombings.
