Pete had complete faith in Nick, and I think he was giving Wesson enough rope so he could hang himself and he did. I think there is a desk deep in the bowels of the FBI with Wesson's name on it.This case was Pete's test for Wesson in a lot of ways and he failed on almost all of them.
As I mentioned in the previous question, I didn't get this part. Even if this was a test for Wesson, Pete should have kept Nick in the loop. Also, he should have stayed put and never left while Nick had concerns. I really struggled with this part of the story.
I'm with Sharon - this was a hard part of the book for me. I didn't understand what Pete was doing/thinking. Nick and Noah are on his team - you would think that would hold some weight.
Here is where I think Pete’s objective made him bend too far to compensate. I’m clear that Pete doesn’t respect him or he’s not the great psychologist he’s purported to be. But, he’s close to Nick and worried that Nick’s objectivity might be questionable so he gives Wesson more of the benefit of the doubt than warranted.
People like Wesson often get ahead because those in charge are worried that their negative feelings about the man may be making them lose their objectivity. I’m with Anita…I think there’s a tiny little office in a tiny little town with weak WiFi waiting for him.
