What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I remember reading this book in 2005/2006, however I'm not sure what the publishing date is.

The main character went to school in an old building; I think it was either a boarding school, or some school in England. She has two friends, one a boy that is sort-of a love interest, but I don't think it was every clear.

She eventually befriends this ghost that slowly manipulates her into doing bad things, etc. Until she eventually starts to disappear herself...or something along those lines.

The copy I checked out from the library was paperback and the cover had a picture of a sad/angsty dark-haired girl looking down. I think there was a house or castle in the background and the entire image had orange hues. (Sorry, I have a very image-based memory.)

The title was something along the lines of 'the mysterious case' or 'the strange incident' of M_____. I'm almost certain the main character's name started with an M.

The ghost might have possibly tried to lure the main character intro switching places and the main character was almost stuck in the ghost realm.
