This is a stretch, but some of the keywords you mentioned popped up.
The Time Of The GhostAshley, was the ghost a boy or girl, from a different time period, etc?
What time period does the story take place?
Part of a series?
What sort of trouble does the ghost get the girl into?
Frost by Marianna Baer has some similarities, but it lookts like it was first published in 2011.
Ashley, what else can you tell us about the girl?
Is this a contemporary or historical story?
What's the tone - mystery, suspense, horror, etc.?

"I remember reading this book in 2004-2006, however I'm not sure what the publishing date is as I checked it out from the library.
The main character recently moved and went to school in an old building; I think it was either a boarding school, or some school in England. S/he eventually befriends this ghost that slowly manipulates them into doing bad things, etc. Until they eventually starts to disappear herself...or something along those lines. The ghost might have possibly tried to lure the main character intro switching places and the main character was almost stuck in the ghost realm.
The copy I checked out from the library was paperback and had a house or castle in the background and the entire image had orange and black hues. (Sorry, I have a very image-based memory.)
The title was something along the lines of 'the mysterious case' or 'the strange incident'. It was definitely a longer title and had at least 4 words in it.
Thank you."

Ashley, I copied some plot and book details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.
The main character could be a girl or boy? This character is illustrated on the cover?
What is the story's time period? Is it definitely set in England?

"There is a "Haunted Boarding Schools" list, but I'm not sure it's there. :( https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... if you want to double-check. I'll be sure to add it when it is found! :)"

Hi all! Coming back to say that, after almost 9 years, I FINALLY found out what this book is (from a random TikTok video I came across no less...) but it is "Un Lun Dun" by China Miéville. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un_Lun_Dun
Great! Glad you found your book, Ashley. Thanks for the update. I've been wanting to read that book for years.

The main character went to school in an old building; I think it was either a boarding school, or some school in England. She has two friends, one a boy that is sort-of a love interest, but I don't think it was every clear.
She eventually befriends this ghost that slowly manipulates her into doing bad things, etc. Until she eventually starts to disappear herself...or something along those lines.
The copy I checked out from the library was paperback and the cover had a picture of a sad/angsty dark-haired girl looking down. I think there was a house or castle in the background and the entire image had orange hues. (Sorry, I have a very image-based memory.)
The title was something along the lines of 'the mysterious case' or 'the strange incident' of M_____. I'm almost certain the main character's name started with an M.
