Sheila | 1 comments Children’s chapter book, read at my grandmother’s house around 1968. Hardback, green cover. It is likely that it was a used book. It contained references to a family automobile, so it must have been published after 1930 or so.

Each chapter described one event in the life of Petey, who was probably around 4 or 5, as I remember, his siblings went to school and he didn’t. Here are some of the events I remember:

Before Christmas, Petey and his mother are going around town, doing errands. The townspeople ask Petey what he wants for Christmas. He tells everyone that he just wants one of those “little toy cars” (Matchbox? I don’t remember if he uses the name or not). Ultimately, Petey ends up getting cars from each of the townspeople.

A snowstorm keeps Petey and his siblings from going outside. They try to find things to do, but we’re bored. In the end they sew a quilt, even though the older male siblings initially balk at doing “girl’s” stuff.

Petey enjoys talking to the vegetable man, who sells vegetables from his wagon, pulled by a donkey. The man (Hispanic, I think) invites Petey to come to his farm to meet his family/children. Petey’s parents drive him to the farm.

I sure hope that someone can help me find it! I have been searching for 20 years!

Rainbowheart | 28899 comments Are you sure it was Petey?

My first thought was Carolyn Haywood's Penny series. Here's a Penny is the first book, and the sequel Penny and Peter involves him getting a new brother.
