A Year from Start

Our discovery challenges are designed to encourage you to read books from other cultures and locations. Let's travel the world while making some simple connections.

The connections we will be making are based on the LAST LETTER of your title, connecting to the FIRST LETTER of your next title. You can CHOOSE to use OR ignore the articles (A, An or The) for each connection, depending on what works best to make the connection.

BUT!!! THERE IS A DISCOVERY CHALLENGE TWIST!! You have a set number of books you must read that take place in DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, the number depending on your level of participation. You do have a year to complete the challenge, so jump in and give it a try! And if it takes longer than a year, no worries!

Choose Your Level of Participation:
Tourist: 6-8 Connecting Books (representing at least 4 countries)
Explorer: 9-11 Connecting Books (representing at least 5 countries)
Globe Trotter: 12+ Connecting Books (representing at least 6 countries)

Here's a starting example:
First book (Australia): Earthly Delights (S)
Second book (Tibet): Sky Burial: An Epic Love Story of Tibet (T)
Third Book (Greece): A Terrible Beauty (Y)
Fourth Book (England*): Yesterday's Sun (N) ETC.

*Helpful Note About the UK: To make things easier for the this challenge, the countries that make up the UK will be considered separate countries.

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

Happy Traveling!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 349 comments Jan,

1) some of the books have instead of a country setting a regional setting (e.g. Caribbean cruise or somewhere in the Middle East) if I'm not able to infer from the hints any country would a region work as well or would you prefer if I don't use those for this challenge?

2) at least one or two of the books I'd like to read in the next couple of month have kind of like a world or Europe tour with several country locations (I'm not sure yet if there will be a primary or major one) can I pick there any country or would you have any preferences (first, last, most often mentioned, my favorite, ...)

Jan | 21078 comments You always have such good questions that make me think Agnieszka!!

So, to answer . . . if the book takes place in more than one country, I would prefer that the one you use for this challenge covers at least 50% of the book in that location. And in regards to the "regions", I think I'm going to say no, avoiding that "can of worms" that it might open up.

Let me know if that answers everything.

Thank you so much. Your answers help me to plan though could make life difficult if it turns out later the single county location in the blurb is actually a lot of traveling without a predominant setting. Though I suppose that’s why we get a year to cover so ‘little’ ground :-D

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 349 comments Another question, sorry (but only a little bit :-D)

If a title starts with a number or special sign, should I just treat those as if it were written out? How about titles in other languages where those are written out differently?

examples what I'd use and hope you agree :-D
English language titles:
Dragon Sim-13 D&N (thirteeN)
The 7th Canon (T)SN ((The) Seventh)
#1 Crush NH (Number)
#Catfished HD (Hashtag)

of course I'd add dictionary links for the pertinent part of a foreign title
Lot 202 LA (two=dwA)
1001001: Netzkind ED (one=Eins)
Wszystko wina kota! (Everything's the Cat's Fault!) WK (exclamation mark=wykrzykniK) or rather WA (who cares about punctuation *grins*)
Offline: Warum antwortest du nicht, Gott? ON (qestion mark=fragezeicheN) or rather OT (who cares about punctuation and those pesky Ns are a real pain *grins*)

message 32: by Jan, Moderator (last edited Mar 05, 2023 05:19PM) (new)

Jan | 21078 comments Thanks for your questions Agnieszka!

For the numbers, use the written out words.

And in regards to books in different languages, I would prefer you use one language for the whole challenge. So use the English titles for the whole challenge OR use the titles in your own language for the whole challenge, including the links in your language. Does that make sense?

And for the connections, please disregard the ending punctuation.

Thank you. As to the question if it makes sense, it does but is not really practicable as I found out when this issue was raised in a different group. Which means I'll just leave out any German and Polish titles starting or ending with numbers/special signs.
Though I wanted to make sure I understand it correctly: You meant you'd like me to use the English edition for titles with connecting issues (numbers, (translatable) special sign like # or @) and not all books in foreign languages, is it correct?

Just so you understand why it's such a big issue:
Too many of the Polish/German books were never translated to English (and there are way too many books without a Polish/German translation out there to even thinking about going this route) especially since I read a lot of indie books.
I a different group I tried to provide a literal translation for Polish/German books but that changed in most cases the starting letter and made it so much more work I had to make a decision with how much frustration I can deal and in the end decided not to continue the challenges (which is not a threat just pointing out possible issues for other members as well, I'm not the only one reading in more than one language)
If I have to leave out all books I read in Polish/German I'm not sure I'll be able to find enough connecting books I can get my hands on using this challenge's parameters. I noticed I run out of usable books which was the only reason I started to consider those titles with additional work at all (I won't even consider books ending with X - that's road to disaster and an unfinished challenge :-C) and that was before I even thought about the possibility I could start a book I'm not able to finish (for whatever reasons) and can't find anything with the same letters *panic - ok I'll be back later when I got it a handle on myself again*

message 34: by Jan, Moderator (last edited Mar 07, 2023 09:10AM) (new)

Jan | 21078 comments I get it and I certainly don't want you having to back out of the challenge. Go ahead and include both English and Polish/German books as you were planning on doing. Please ignore any unusual signs when connecting and use the written out numeric word for numbers.

Sorry for instilling any panic.
