Winner of the Blue Ink star for outstanding literary merit: When Jesuit priest and poet Stephen Engle answers the call to serve among the poorest of the poor, he becomes a witness to one of the twentieth century’s unforgettable moments. ‘’I wish there was a 10 star rating.’’ (Goodreads Giveaway winner)

Excerpt:
Stephen looked around at the winter night, his face flushed from the warmth of the soup kitchen where he had been working below. With bare hands he turned up the collar of his coat against the cold and started down the narrow, unplowed street in the direction of a distant traffic light. He had the look of those who are poor — hatless, in a thin coat, head bent down against the wind — this strikingly handsome young man looking up fleetingly to glance at passersby, and in his eyes intelligence and goodness shone.
At a distance he had grown to resemble his father more, with the same suggestion of loneliness in his walk, though what in the father had been an isolation born of too great a loss was, in the son, the solitude of deep concentration, which is a different form of loneliness.
There was always about Stephen Engle the sense that he was moving away, as now, through blowing snow, he vanished from view. It showed here in a simple walk to the bus, the bearing that was ever the same: quick, focused, directed in response to some hidden claim on his urgent young life.
