Yes, it’s YA. The main character is 17-yr-old Elissa, newcomer to a Seattle suburb who becomes mixed up in the town’s old secrets. Finished it tonight. Not bad overall, though there was a bit of a plot hole in chapter 17.
I think I just crossed off a PopSugar Challenge prompt with this one. I thought the movie was based on the book, since the cover says “now a major motion picture.” However, the title page says that it is “based on the screenplay of David Loucka/From a story by Jonathan Mostow.” Love it when I can check off prompts without even trying!

What a wonderful find! Overall, this was an entertaining, heartwarming, and engaging story of lonely misfits finding each other. It pulls on the emotions and heartstrings at times.

Overall, this exciting debut novel is a powerful page-turner with great world-building details and tension that was almost alive. It is a military action thriller with a lot of violence. Hendricks balances the shocking and upsetting aspects of the novel well against the mystery of the group he’s training and Derek’s love of his family.

* Weirdos from Another Planet! by Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes #4) — Have enjoyed revisiting this favorite comic strip.
* Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park — I first read this while in middle school (7th or 8th grade) and remember loving it. A few years ago I found a copy at the library’s used book sale, and have been meaning to reread it for some time. So glad I pulled it out for my Australian book. It’s been so long since I first read it that about the only thing I remembered is that it was set in Sydney and involved time travel.

I saw in her bio that she was born in NZ, but moved to Australia — and I did set the challenge for either an Aussie author or set in Australia. This one stood the test of time for me.
