Monique Baez | 47 comments I've been slacking on my reading and this is an easy enough transition back into the habit! It was recommended to be by a friend since we share a love for Harry Potter! I'm 84% through (I read on my kindle). I love being whisked off into another world, and this book does just that. It is good, but doesn't seem nearly as sophisticated as the Potter series. It is a trilogy, and I will be finishing it, lol! So, that's saying something!

Note: I'm catching up on the past 10 weeks in no particular order, I hope that's okay! The group seems awesome!

misplacedselchie | 347 comments I enjoyed this series as well, years ago. One thing you have to remember is (unlike the awesomeness that is HP), this was written in response to how CS Lewis wrote The Chronicles of Narnia. Pullman didn't like the "blatant" religious usages so this was his comeback. Still an interesting read ;)

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments I didn't liked it this one too much, althought I liked it better than the movie :P ... however the second book in this series (The Subtle Knife) was so good and I loved it so much, so if you like this one, you should read the second one too :)

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 414 comments I love this! But you have to complete the trilogy to fully appreciate the story. The first book is pretty childish, but the second and third are where the whole issue is brought into the light. It is just so good. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I heard it's not really that great. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy the trilogy!

Jessica | 225 comments See I remember enjoying the books up to a point and then the ending being just not that great.

I personally hope you enjoy it though :)

I wasn't aware of the context, Pullman sounds pretty interesting as an author. Thanks for responding!

I'm glad to hear that there's depth and goodness to look forward to in the next two books. And while I wanted to enjoy the movie, it was pretty awful. Aside from Nicole Kidman, it seemed miscast and the plot was rushed.

Sophie (sawphie) I read this trilogy for the first time when I was a teenager and remember really liking it. I listened to it last fall in audiobook with pleasure, it is a good and original story, and I like the anti-religion parts. I'll all for non-conformism, so having a children's book criticize institutions like that is a blast!

The movie was awful, I agree.

Jana This book was recommended to me years ago. I am finally getting around to reading it for week 20.
