Alexa wrote: "Has everyone already read How to Be a Woman?"I have not read it yet. It is high up on my list. Definitely gets my vote.
I've read it but would like to see what the group thinks. I didn't think it was great, but seem to be in the minority for some reason.
I wasn't planning on reading it on my own, but this might be good incentive. I've seen such varying opinions on this book that it might lead to an interesting discussion.
Two other books that have come up in conversations lately here: We Should All Be Feminists and The Beauty Myth.
So three non-fiction titles have been thrown out as potential upcoming group reads. What about fiction? Here's a great list for those looking for inspiration: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...What's on this list that folks would like to read and discuss together?
Well, I LOVED The Handmaid's Tale, and I own A Thousand Splendid Suns but haven't gotten around to reading it yet (school takes up a huge chunk of my time). I'd enjoy either of these two titles but I'm definitely open to others!
How about Delta of Venus or Divergent or Love Medicine or Death Comes for the Archbishop or The Poisonwood Bible?
I have started How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran, whether we are group-reading it or not. And I am crying with laughter.
I'm getting a clear sense that How to Be a Woman really needs to be our next non-fiction selection! Given how late it is in the month, maybe we can decide on our next fiction selection here as well? I saw double mentions for both A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Poisonwood Bible. How about if we get a quick show of hands between those two, and then we can set up a more formal poll for the next few months?

That would be an interesting conversation, looking at A Tree Grows in Brooklyn through a feminist lens! Any other nominations/thoughts?
All right then, by popular acclaim, the two selections for May are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and We Should All Be Feminists!
Now, let's start gathering suggestions for June - it would be nice to get those onto the calendar a bit earlier next time! :)
I ordered
from book depository so would be interested in that OR in rereading
or
is one I want to read (anything bell hooks actually) but I have to try to track down and read may books rather than just telling people what to read in june so only giving an opinion to start discussion
Those all look like great choices! Thanks! All About Love was one of our March books - so there's still a good chance that if you start talking about that one in its discussion thread others will join in.
This has intrigued me ever since I first learned of its existence - would it count as feminist? Lao Tzu: Tao Te Ching: A Book about the Way and the Power of the Wayby Ursula K. Le Guin.
I've been meaning to read Orlando and A Short History of Women also sounds interesting. I recently heard about Girls Will Be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently and have heard good things about it. Though it does seem to be harder to find, at least for me in the US.
I included Women After All: Sex, Evolution, and the End of Male Supremacy in the poll. We just read Fat Is a Feminist Issue last year though.
And the second poll, for our fiction read, is now up! Come make your choice here: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
There are three clear winners emerging from the non-fiction poll (although we still have two more days of voting left on that one). It would be nice if three clear winners emerge from the fiction poll, and then we'll be all set for the next three months!
Announcing the winners!!!For June:
The Beauty Myth and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
For July:
Girls Will be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently and Orlando
For August:
The Unfinished Revolution: Voices from the Global Fight for Women's Rights and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.
Thanks to everybody who voted; it looks like we've got some great selections lined up here!
