Alexa (AlexaNC) What would folks like to read next?

message 2: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Has everyone already read How to Be a Woman?

Jim (jkmfilms) | 46 comments Alexa wrote: "Has everyone already read How to Be a Woman?"

It's excellent!

message 4: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 322 comments Alexa wrote: "Has everyone already read How to Be a Woman?"

I have not read it yet. It is high up on my list. Definitely gets my vote.

message 5: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (seffietay) I've read it but would like to see what the group thinks. I didn't think it was great, but seem to be in the minority for some reason.

I wasn't planning on reading it on my own, but this might be good incentive. I've seen such varying opinions on this book that it might lead to an interesting discussion.

message 7: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Two other books that have come up in conversations lately here: We Should All Be Feminists and The Beauty Myth.

message 8: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) So three non-fiction titles have been thrown out as potential upcoming group reads. What about fiction? Here's a great list for those looking for inspiration: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...

What's on this list that folks would like to read and discuss together?

message 9: by Seth (new)

Seth Rumbley | 7 comments Well, I LOVED The Handmaid's Tale, and I own A Thousand Splendid Suns but haven't gotten around to reading it yet (school takes up a huge chunk of my time). I'd enjoy either of these two titles but I'm definitely open to others!

message 10: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (seffietay) A Thousand Splendid Suns!

message 12: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Last call for nominations!

message 13: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (seffietay) Poisonwood Bible has been on my list for a while too

message 15: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 322 comments I have started How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran, whether we are group-reading it or not. And I am crying with laughter.

message 16: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) I'm getting a clear sense that How to Be a Woman really needs to be our next non-fiction selection! Given how late it is in the month, maybe we can decide on our next fiction selection here as well? I saw double mentions for both A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Poisonwood Bible. How about if we get a quick show of hands between those two, and then we can set up a more formal poll for the next few months?

message 17: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (seffietay) A Thousand Splendid Suns and How to Be a Woman would be an interesting pairing!

message 18: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) So how about We Should All Be Feminists and The Poisonwood Bible for next month?

message 19: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) (One short one and one long one!)

message 20: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 322 comments Alexa wrote: "So how about We Should All Be Feminists and The Poisonwood Bible for next month?"

23 pages? £0.99? No excuse not to read We Should All Be Feminists :-)

message 21: by Kira (new)

Kira What about a classic, like A Tree grows in Brooklyn?

message 22: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) That would be an interesting conversation, looking at A Tree Grows in Brooklyn through a feminist lens! Any other nominations/thoughts?

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael | 24 comments A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is on my to-read list, so I'm definitely interested in that one.

message 24: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) All right then, by popular acclaim, the two selections for May are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and We Should All Be Feminists!

message 25: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Now, let's start gathering suggestions for June - it would be nice to get those onto the calendar a bit earlier next time! :)

message 26: by Stef (new)

Stef Rozitis | 71 comments I ordered The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers from book depository so would be interested in that OR in rereading Orlando by Virginia Woolf or Pirates! by Celia Rees

All About Love New Visions (bell hooks Love Trilogy) by Bell Hooks is one I want to read (anything bell hooks actually) but I have to try to track down and read may books rather than just telling people what to read in june so only giving an opinion to start discussion

message 27: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Those all look like great choices! Thanks! All About Love was one of our March books - so there's still a good chance that if you start talking about that one in its discussion thread others will join in.

message 28: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) I just ran across this and it looks interesting: A Short History of Women

message 29: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) This has intrigued me ever since I first learned of its existence - would it count as feminist? Lao Tzu: Tao Te Ching: A Book about the Way and the Power of the Way
by Ursula K. Le Guin.

message 30: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (seffietay) Alexa that book is sitting on my nightstand as I type this. Would love an excuse to pick it up!

message 31: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I've been meaning to read Orlando and A Short History of Women also sounds interesting. I recently heard about Girls Will Be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently and have heard good things about it. Though it does seem to be harder to find, at least for me in the US.

message 32: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Last call for nominations before the polls go up!

message 33: by Paula (new)

Paula (lunaontherun) | 31 comments "Women After All" by Melvin Konner, M.D. or "Fat is a Feminist Issue" by Susie Orbach.

message 34: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) I included Women After All: Sex, Evolution, and the End of Male Supremacy in the poll. We just read Fat Is a Feminist Issue last year though.

message 35: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) The first poll, for the non-fiction choice, is now up - come vote!

message 36: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) And the second poll, for our fiction read, is now up! Come make your choice here: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...

message 37: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) There are three clear winners emerging from the non-fiction poll (although we still have two more days of voting left on that one). It would be nice if three clear winners emerge from the fiction poll, and then we'll be all set for the next three months!

message 38: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Announcing the winners!!!
For June:
The Beauty Myth and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
For July:
Girls Will be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently and Orlando
For August:

Thanks to everybody who voted; it looks like we've got some great selections lined up here!
