MacKenna’s three grandsons by his deceased son Robert are a disappointment to him so as he faces his imminent death, he takes a closer look at his other deceased son Conal’s three daughters to determine if there’s a deserving heir among them. He chooses Kate as the recipient of his fortune believing her to be the most like him. What does he see in Kate that he finds lacking in the others? Thoughts on this and on Kate’s reaction when learning of the comparison?

MacKenna "worked" hard for the fortune he amassed and didn't want to think it would just be wasted away. He wanted his "legacy" to live on after him and the nephews for sure were not going to do that.

Kate was smart and inventive. She, and her sisters, used the one advantage they had: education. I think MacKenna saw in Kate characteristics he wanted, but never really had.

Kate was appalled that this nasty piece of work thought she was like him.

Compton MacKenna started out with nothing and made a fortune. He sees the same thing in Kate. She started her company while she was still in high school. She worked on it through college and made a very successful business.

He wasn't going to split his fortune down the middle and give to his relatives. He found the one who he thought would keep his legacy intact and add to that fortune.

Compton knew his fortune would be gone quickly if his grandsons received an equal portion. It would be hard to leave it to someone who would pissed it away.

Kate has an entrepreneurial spirit. She would manage the funds better and increase whatever she receives.

I agree that Kate was the best choice, but also knew that she would hate being compared to him as in she was the "most" like him. In some ways, she was...but she had the compassion that he never possessed.
