Her refusal was pride and I can see why Kate wanted to refuse the money. MacKenna was a odious man who earned his fortune in despicable ways - legal, but despicable. All the money didn't make MacKenna happy. The money the nephew's had destroyed their lives. The girls are smart and will earn their way through life and be better people for it.
I'm thinking a combination of Foolishness and Pride. Kate would have gladly thrown the money back into Compton's face if he had been in front of her. But she could do so much good with that money. It would be crazy to give it up and then lose her home, business, and her sister's college fund. She could pay off her bills and then give the rest to charity.
It loses its' "up yours" value if she doesn't refuse the whole amount. Robin, you and I would have been practical about it and used a million or so to take care of business then given the rest to charity.
I'm with you both!! I think it would have been sweet justice to use the money to solve their money issues and use the rest for charity which they did. It would have griped him to know his money went to charity imo. So maybe justice after all.
I agree with you all. She did use the money as collateral for her loan, right? I would like it better if she used some of the money for seed money, but I like the way it worked out.Her mother should have talked to a lawyer when she knew she was sick. Her children aren't responsible for her debt as long as they don't pay one penny towards her bills after her death.
