There's an event at the library I walk to. I don't know if I can move fast enough to get there on time. I'm going to try though.

Me too! And I personally thank staff members when I check out a challenged book. But I signed the NLW letter also, thanks for the link.
Thank you for continuing to share and update. I feel ill about what's happening in my state. Always good to be reminded of what we can still do to help.
Rohan Satija, a Texas high school student, wrote for PBS about what young people can do to fight book bans. He shares how the library was a safe haven for him when he first moved to Texas and was being bullied for his accent and how reading books with diverse representation helped him to feel like he belonged. He started a nonprofit called the Let’s Learn Foundation, whose “Donate Diverse” program has donated over 5,000 diverse books to underprivileged students. He urges students to attend school board and library board meetings to make their voices heard in order to fight back against book bans.-Literary Riot editor Danika

Join us for live performances, volunteer opportunities, and plenty of family-friendly activities plus a Happy Hour just for Red Wine & Blue members. School information specialists, who fill the roles of librarians, have been directed to review books for indications of what an executive order called “gender ideology” or “discriminatory equity ideology."
Books that could fit those categories will be placed off-limits to students.
Schools have also been told they can’t host celebrations or events for Black History Month and other cultural observances.

The report is also filled with fabricated allegations of criminal conduct by librarians, publishers, authors, and educators and argues in favor of criminal charges and incarceration.
This is not an empty threat.
Dozens of states have already enacted or attempted to enact legislation to arrest librarians.

PETITION: Don't Ban Books in the United States
Proposed censorship measures in several states could deny your right to read some books in our Nation's libraries and lead to librarians facing criminal charges for the books on the shelves.

PETITION: Don't Abolish the Department of Education
This bill is a poorly veiled disguise for doing what so many local groups have tried to do in the past several years—controlling educational curricula in public schools and libraries, including banning books and materials that contain views and perspectives they disagree with.

Want To Help Teens Protect The Freedom to Read? Libraries, Apply for Books Unbanned Programming Funding NowBrooklyn Public Library's Books Unbanned is offering funding for libraries to develop teen programming around the freedom to read.
Encourage your library to apply!
Libraries nationwide are invited to apply for one-time funds to launch programming for teens and young adults related to the freedom to read. A total of $50,000 in funding will be given out, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Any US library is eligible to apply and receive funding, but special consideration will be given to small and rural libraries, where funding and support for such efforts are often more difficult to attain. Libraries in communities experiencing significant challenges with access to books in libraries will also receive special consideration.
The Books Unbanned Programming Funding will also provide libraries with support from the Books Unbanned team, helping them develop and implement ideas to empower young people as leaders not only in supporting the freedom to read, but also in library advocacy and their communities more broadly. Funding recipients will have access to an immense toolkit of ideas and resources to ensure success.*
https://booksunbanned.com/funding
*Not able or interested in applying for funding but still seeking to help empower young (and not so young!) people in your community when it comes to the freedom to read and library advocacy? Keep your eyes peeled. The Books Unbanned team will be unveiling a robust, adaptable, and free toolkit for anyone interested in learning and teaching about these topics soon

Not everyone in Florida is a lost cause. A family friend sent me a link to this bookstore, The Lynx"The Lynx is a new general-interest bookstore in Gainesville, Florida with an emphasis on books that are currently challenged or banned in Florida, as well as those by BIPOC authors, LGBTQ+ authors, and Florida authors."

They take donations so they can give new banned books out to the community.

In New Mexico, write directly to your senators and Reps. to tell them to support the anti-book ban legislation.
And thank Senator Pope, Senator Sedillo-Lopez and Rep. Kathleen Cates for introducing the legislation.

For the past two summers, teachers rallied across the country at historic sites to speak out against anti-history education bills and to make public their pledge to teach the truth. The teacher-led rallies received national media attention, providing a valuable counter narrative to the oversized coverage of the well-funded anti-CRT movement.
Once again, we invite educators, students, parents, and community members to rally across the country and pledge to #TeachTruth and defend LGBTQ+ rights on June 10, 2023.
We invite people to participate from all over the United States. You can plan a virtual event or gathering at a historic site. From our freedom to vote, to our children’s freedom to learn, to everyone’s freedom from gun violence, certain politicians want to overturn the will of the people and block the policies we need for our students, families, and communities to thrive. By coming together, we can rewrite the rules to ensure safe, affirming, and welcoming schools and the freedom to learn for our children — across race, place, and gender identities — no exceptions.
