Something Wonderful by Judith McNaught has a hero who was presumed dead for two years, the heroine marries his best friend, and when the hero returns, he thought the heroine had plotted his murder. Yes, the H/h were married before his presumed death. I don't recall if the H/h grew up together in a whaling town because he's a duke and I think she was from a different class.
