Rose started to say some words in Latin. Then she took out a lump of clay and broke it in half, tipped a bit of water over it and then handed half to Lilly. ‘Make your favourite animal or mystical creature,’ she told her. As they were both artists, this was an easy task. Lilly made a unicorn and Rose made an elephant. They put them down in the middle of the circle. Rose got some fresh flower petals and sprinkled them over the clay figures, then added more water, so the clay glimmered in the candlelight. Sitting opposite each other, Rose spoke out the words of the chant and clapped her hands six times. ‘I will go first,’ she said. ‘Truth or dare, Lilly?’ ‘Truth, please.’ ‘Who did you love the most, Buster or Shawn?’ ‘That’s easy,’ said Lilly. ‘Buster.’ Just then, sparks flew up from the clay object and a horn grew out of Lilly’s head. ‘Argh! What’s happing?’ Lilly screamed at her Mum while rushing over to look in the mirror. ‘You said a lie, so you got the first part of your magical being,’ Rose said smugly. Lilly looked at the clay figure and saw there was no horn on it. ‘But I did not lie!’ Lilly protested. ‘I love Buster the most.’ ‘Maybe you think that, but your heart is saying something different,’ Rose replied. ‘Don’t worry, the game is not over. You have more chances to win!’ ‘My turn,’ said Lilly, in a slightly cross, but excited, tone. ‘So, Mum, truth or dare?’ Rose did not like the tone in Lilly’s voice, so she said, ‘Dare.’ ‘I dare you to ring Nick, and say you have been madly in love with him for a long time and you would simply love to go on a date with him!’ ‘Lilly! No!’ Just then, Rose’s right leg started to swell up and then it turned into an elephant foot. Lilly fell backwards laughing.
