holly (kenji’s version) | 2 comments Hi! Mollie invited me to this group! I also like to listen to music while I write. I prefer to listen to things without words though. There’s a youtube channel called Abbie Emmons, and she has a playlist of immersive writing sessions and they are SOO helpful. They also have you work for 25 minutes at a time, with 5 minute breaks. I get so much writing done listening to them!

Also, use Comic Sans to write your rough drafts. Trust me.

Here are the best writing tips I've learned in college from textbooks, writers, and professors:

1. On your first draft, really just focus on writing. Just try your best to get draft #1 down, and don't worry so much about things like finding the perfect word or description, for example. the revisions can be done later :)

2. If it's not going to move the storyline along or advance the plot, take it out. Often times, too many unnecessary adjectives and descriptions make for a lengthy, weak story.

3. Write a character's internal thoughts in italics.

4. If you're ever struggling with writer's block, try "freewriting." Freewriting is basically where you just write whatever thoughts are in your head. Don't worry about spelling, grammar, or anything...just simply write. This will help to clear your mind and also get you ready to start writing again.

5. I saved the weirdest tip for last lol. If you're ever stuck, and you don't know how to move the story forward, change the weather. I know it sounds really weird, but trust me, if you change the weather in your story it will help you to continue writing, at least for a little bit ;)

Hope these help!

Yeah I like writing internal thoughts in italics because it just makes it easier to distinguish...and the 5th tip is honestly just humorous 😂

Casey (Indefinitely Inactive) | 14 comments I love freewriting 🥰 I set a timer for 5 minutes before every writing session and just freewrite. Then I'm loosened up for all upcoming work 😁 It's like stretching before a workout.

Casey (Indefinitely Inactive) | 14 comments Yeah, it is. All sorts of weird things come out 😂 And that's almost the best part; that I'm not apprehensive of what I'm writing afterward.

@Casey that's awesome! I know....freewriting can be a bit strange sometimes because of what ends up coming out 😂

This is a paraphrased quote from Jessica Brody's Save the Cat! Writes a Novel. Excellent book. 100% recommended it. I wrote a review that better state its contents, for anyone who wants to check it out.
