Sue | 2773 comments I love Stephen King's books and Fairy Tale didn't disappoint!

The first 1/3 of the book sets up the main character Charlie Reade. He's a good kid, good grades in high school, plays multiple sports, supported his Dad through some really rough times. When he hears a cry for help from the scary recluse (Howard Bowditch) in the 'psycho house' down the road, he doesn't hesitate - he rushes in a saves the elderly man's life. And then goes on to become friends with Mr. Bowditch.

The beginning is a wonderful story all on it's own. But early on Charlie notices a locked and creepy shed behind the house. Charlie's a little apprehensive about the shed, and as a reader I feel like yelling "run, don't go in the shed"!

But...it's a Stephen King novel so OF COURSE Charlie goes in the shed. Then BAM! we drop right into a nightmare.

I loved this whole book. Definitely a retelling of the dark, original Grimm's Fairy Tales - pre-Disney version where evil was really evil, and curses ruined people's lives.

King also references Something Wicked This Way Comes from Ray Bradbury. He's mentioned in the past that this book has been a strong influence in his writing. A big part of Fairy Tale seems to be an homage to Something Wicked This Way Comes. At one point Charlie even re-reads the book as a guide for navigating the world in the shed.
