Hey Group!!

For September we decided to switch it up a little.

We would like suggestions for nonfiction books this month.

If you have a nonfiction book that you believe would be a great group read please post it below.

There are so many to choose from, but I'd like to nominate The Heart of a Woman: The Life and Music of Florence B. Price by Rae Linda Brown

I’ve never heard of her but the synopsis is interesting.

I told myself no matter what’s chosen, I’m going to read all the suggestions lol we’ll see how that works out

Florence Price grew up in a city which became more and more openly hostile and racist and far more Jim Crow during her lifetime. I don't want to give spoilers.

I have a passion for learning about women in the arts, particularly in classical music in which all women were squelched, especially in composition, but women of colour more so. But I'm not big on reading memoirs and biographies so don't do as much book learning on them as I should.

I first heard of her when my son played one of her pieces in college and said she's very good. She has some marvelous works--mostly vocal (choral and some art songs, which are one type of classical songs), but also some instrumental works.

Here is a marvellous rendition of her Violin Concerto--one of my GR friends knows this violinist (yes, I'm green with envy) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMRTU..., and here is one of my favourite art songs by her--a setting of a poem by Langston Hughes and it hearkens to a spiritual even though it's an art song beautifully sung by Dr. Ollie Watts Davis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaCB_...

Her mother made her pass as Mexican when she went to New England Conservatory--they did accept blacks, unlike many schools at that time, but blacks were taught separately. Price hated hiding who she was and as soon as she was done never did it again.

Since we aren’t reading the second book in Mama Ruby series at this time I would like to suggest this book.

Ohh OK... I'm an Android user lol
Currently, on my Samsung tablet, there are a # of link options, but Only the comment box on the mobile...
I, rarely ever comment via my phone, because of that reason; the format isn't pleasing to the eye (speaking for myself) lol

Never mind, I got it to work!

It didn’t work for me either Angel. I had to go away and come back to it again later.

I'm not sure if this works with the app, but you can also find it by clicking on Polls on the top right of this thread if you use the website, at least on a desktop and a laptop. Thankfully this one correctly shows the newest polls on top. :)

I’m using the iPhone app and I haven’t had any issues when I press the link and I’ve pressed it a lot lol.

Also, I’ve come to the conclusion that this app is a little wonky in the threads because regularly words are missing from several posts on here, including mine. When I go to the mobile website or the desktop website the full post will be there. So, I said that to say, I don’t know what’s up with the app 🤦🏾‍♀️ sorry

I’ve bought both Cicely’s and Viola’s books just in case. I’ve had my nomination on pre order and it should be arriving sometime this month. I am still plugging away at Mama Ruby TUR but have just started part 3 of the book, so I have some time off this week and plan on finishing it.

What I've heard is that the app isn't as good as the website, but I use my desktop since I have a body friendly set up and enjoy the large screen I have.
