Lea (leaspot) | 3718 comments We are reading The Hero Two Doors Down: Based on the True Story of Friendship between a Boy and a Baseball Legend by Sharon Robinson for our September buddy read. This is a children's book, and is only 208 pages long. A nice short read before we gear up for next month, when we'll be reading The Little Friend, which is 624 pages. :-)

This book is about the true story of a friendship between Stephen Satlow, a kid who lived two doors away from his hero, baseball legend Jackie Robinson.

Ioana | 2170 comments A good opportunity for me to learn (maybe) about baseball and Jackie Robinson. I started it, when are you reading it?

Alissa Patrick (apatrick12211) | 1850 comments I love how the ball players were just people back then, not celebrities. Meaning, they rented houses in regular neighborhoods instead of living in giant Mansions on the water. i love that

Patricia | 1170 comments Yes, most of them weren't paid well at all back then. From one extreme to another.

I finished this last night & enjoyed it. The fact that it was a true story made it a better story though. I was reminded that several years ago when I was still homeschooling my kids, we read In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. Obviously, a different story but same time period and I highly recommend it for all ages.

Ioana | 2170 comments I finished it too, and enjoyed it. I know nothing of baseball, nor any players, but even living under a rock I knew the Jackie Robinson name. Learning more about the person (not necessarily the player) and the times when he was the first black player was interesting.
What a difference between then and now!

Lea (leaspot) | 3718 comments I loved the book. I guess that isn't a surprise. I love children's books and I love baseball. It tackled some sensitive subjects, but did it in a very thoughtful way.
