I noticed some of you have finished already! I am still waiting for my library copy to show up.

Cheryl | 1174 comments I got the book in early and have already finished it. Having seen the PBS series based on it, I'd say the series closely follows the book.

Normally, it takes me a bit longer to read historical fiction because the plot often has a slower pace. Not do with this book. It has a decent pace, and there's not alot of "historical information" to bog down the plot.

The Count of Monte Cristo? In what way?

Sarah (sarahmott) | 469 comments Guy comes back after long absence to find everyone has moved on including his lady love. Puts some wrongs right. Maries his servant.

I never thought of it like that before, but I see your point. No big revenge plot, though.

Sigh. So, I requested a physical copy of this book because my library does not offer this as a kindle book in overdrive. It showed as being in transit, but then disappeared. Turns out it must have been in really bad shape because now it's in the place where they send damaged books. I just looked again tonight, and they have ordered 5 new copies. Hmmm. I may just have to read the epub version on my iPad. Sigh.

Cheryl | 1174 comments Adelaide,

You could try cancelling your Hold on that copy, then resubmit a Hold on a different copy. I’ve done that before when it was taking forever to get a library book. (Sometimes they get delivered to the wrong library, then they must be returned to their origin library and restart the process. This takes alot of time.)

They must have sent you an older one, if it needed repairs. I hope you have luck getting a copy. Mybe your local librarian can help?

That one copy was the only physical copy. I think they all got read so much because of the TV show. They have an order for 5 more. I'll see what happens!

Sarah (sarahmott) | 469 comments PBS is so rad. I get hooked on series there all the time. When I was eight, I had a mini-tv radio that I used to watch I, Claudius on at night. My parents thought it was OK because it was Masterpiece Theater. If they only knew. 🤣🤣🤣

I finally got my copy! I am about a third of the way through. It’s well written, and I am enjoying it, but I don’t actually like Ross very much. He’s kind of a pill.

I actually liked the recent PBS series more than I liked the book. The book is fine, but the series has more of a soap opera feel (more emotions, more romance, and Ross is nice to look at).

Cheryl | 1174 comments What do you think of Ross' thoughts about Elizabeth marrying someone else? I thought she had every right to do so, since she thought Ross was dead. He might never return and they weren't engaged, and back then a woman was considered "marriageable" for a relatively short time. (Marriage back then WAS a woman's career, and her only chance for a comfortable life. She really couldn't earn her own money, or if she did it was not very much (i.e. governess, companion, or a maid).

I get that his feelings were hurt, but they didn't have a formal engagement. Everybody gets dumped, you don't need to be a big baby and start kidnapping 13 year olds to work in your kitchen or whatever.
