Why was Wyre not in the book?

I have been a Coraline fan for the longest time, but this was my first time reading the book. I was wondering if anyone knows why Wyre was added to the movie along with the doll that looked like Coraline. I know I'm probably biased due to the fact that I had watched the movie prior to this read but I felt like something was missing without them in the novella.

Wyre was just added later by the studio, the book came first and the author simply didn't want or think of a character like Wyre, but when the studio was making the movie they wanted Coraline to have a friend so they created wyre.
Don't you mean Wybie? I thought it was weird that he wasn't mentioned in the book. I guess that keeps things creepy or odd?
