Ghost Busting Mystery Ghost Busting Mystery (Shady Hoosier Detective Agency, #1) by Daisy Pettles

There is two in this series.

Ian Houston | 33 comments For my money, Carl Hiaasen is always worth it. The characters and situations he comes up with are just so out there that you go past total disbelief to wondering if they might be inspired by real people and events. Given that he was a reporter for years, and lives in Florida, you know he’s seen some things.
If I had to pick one to start with, I’d say Double Whammy and Native Tongue. They introduce Skink, one of his best recurring characters.

Clara São Pedro | 4 comments a forgotten mystery by Jude Deveraux
the cover got me really excited but the story had nothing to do with it
and that's why we souldn't judge the book by its cover
it's helpless though ahaha

Lynn | 130 comments I like Craig Johnson’s Longmire series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... and although the last few aren’t very funny, the early books had a lot of places that made me laugh out loud.

I must admit that I really enjoy the books that have at least a few places that make me laugh more than books that are entirely serious. Even if there are only occasional laughs, I will usually mention humor in my reviews.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I concur on the Carl Hiassen rec above, though one of my favorites is Stormy Weather, which also features Skink in one of his early and more outrageous endeavors.

Adding to that, the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum books are LOL funny and perfectly light when you need to meet those criteria. I would recommend beginning with the first in the series and going from there. Disregard the movie starring Katherine Heigl, as it was a complete abomination of the series starter! For one, Heigl is nothing like Stephanie Plum, and Evanovich did not maintain control of the screenplay.

message 8: by Bill (new)

Bill Mock The Stephanie Plum series on audiobook is hilarious. Lorelei King is a fantastic narrator ( only downside is that she also narrates for Patricia Briggs and there is a crossover of voices in the Mercy Thompson series)
The Andy Carpenter by David Rosenfeltseries is fun
The grave series by Darynda Jones and the neurotic Hitwoman by J D Lynn are also
worth looking into.
If cryptids are your thing the freaky Florida series by Margaret Lashley should be on your list

Kat(Taylor’s Version) | 3 comments All Rick Riordan’s books. Especially Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard

message 10: by Bill (new)

Bill Mock @Montzalee Witt man those code name books look like fun so onto the TBR they go

LiteraryCryptid | 60 comments Ooooh! Yes! My favourite kind of books: Okay! *Unrolls scroll* in no particular order

A Spell for Chameleon - Entire world centered around puns - Fantasy Adventure, long series (ongoing - over 40books) - Great if you want epic adventure and an arsenal of dad-joke puns

The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy - #1, Marvin. . . #2, just the narration style, #3 Marvin! (close 4th is Ford, but just Marvin)

Kill the Farm Boy - The entire Pell series is just laugh out loud - Mocks most fantasy tropes (directly mocks several series *cough Harry Potter cough*) LGBT (binge read series 2x now)

All Systems Red - Hilarious narration, amazing worldbuilding, just spectacular for perfectly timed laughs

Fifty Shames of Earl Grey - Just yes!

The Thursday Next series - and Nursery Crimes Division series by Jasper Fforde - Both hilarious literary fiction comedy series.

Also jumping on the Terry Pratchett love - haven't read a book of his I didn't love.

message 17: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Garns (garnzo) | 2 comments John Swartzwelder, former writer on The Simpsons, has been self publishing books for a while now. I highly recommend The Exploding Detective.

The Stench of Honolulu: A Tropical Adventure by Jack Handey, for those of you who remember and enjoyed "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey" from Saturday Night Live's better days.

And there's Side Effects by Woody Allen, a hilarious collection of short stories and essays.

Lynn | 130 comments The JOE GREY https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8... series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy which is about a cat that talks and his friends who solve murders. They were light and lots of fun and I enjoyed every weird minute of them all.

message 23: by Shawna (new)

Shawna Finnigan (sugoishawn) | 120 comments The only books that have ever made me laugh out loud are books that are so bad that they're funny.

Twilight is the one that makes me laugh the most.

Carrier of the Mark is another one that makes me laugh (it's basically a Twilight rip off but with elemental magic instead of vampires).

message 24: by Christine (new)

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments "Plum Island" by Nelson DeMille. So funny!

message 29: by Marijo (last edited Sep 30, 2023 09:31AM) (new)

Marijo | 15 comments The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes. I admit, I bought this first book in the series because the title grabbed me. Following Fred through his afterlife is a laugh-a-minute as he meets characters of the parahuman world that include dragons and Bubba, the wearhorse. (What? You thought they were all wolves?)

BTW, another book I bought because of the title was Bimbos of the Death Sun by Sharyn McCrumb. Not as sexist as the title might suggest, but instead pokes fun at SF stereotypes.

message 30: by Madison (new)

Madison Hall (madison_p_hall) | 18 comments Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography
This is sooooo funny. I am not a big biography person, or non fiction in general, but this is presented in such a fun way.

Also, the Audio book may be funnier since NPH voices the narration and has to get creative due to the structure of the book.

I LOVE Carl Hiaasen.

message 32: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (chynnablue) | 7 comments Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation by Aisha Tyler had me laughing out loud a lot. So did The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club: True Tales from a Magnificent and Clumsy Life by Laurie Notaro.

Anything by Jenny Larson has me in tears.

Those are all memoirs. For fiction, I love:
Carl Hiaasen, Dave Barry, T. E. Kinsey, and India Holton.

Emily (ems2715) | 4 comments Fur Coat No Knickers

message 34: by Michael (new)

Michael Martz (gmmartz) | 1 comments Brown Dog by Jim Harrison. I think it's really rare to read something so funny that you'll laugh out loud, but Harrison's Brown Dog is such a unique character that I probably did so about a dozen times.

message 35: by Steven (new)

Steven | 14 comments There’s also Cordwainer Smith stories and novels, both strange, spooky, and at times hilarious.

message 39: by Lynn (last edited Oct 08, 2023 03:26PM) (new)

Lynn (ftbooklover) I love all of the Stephanie Plum books too, but the funniest book I've ever read is Heidi's Guide to Four Letter Words by Tara Sivec. Also, right now I'm reading and enjoying the the Bobbie Faye series by Toni McGee Causey.

message 40: by Мария (new)

Мария | 2 comments "Very British Problems" made me laugh out loud)) Felt myself veeeeeery British XD

message 41: by Marijo (new)

Marijo | 15 comments Believe it or not, Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman is another one that had me in stitches. It follows Norse mythology closely, but until I read Gaiman's take on it, I never realized how funny it really was. Yes, there's a tragedy, but imagine Thor trying to pass himself off as Freya, all the while whining, "This will never work." --Or Loki buzzing around as an annoying mosquito.

message 42: by Ptera (new)

Ptera Hunter (ptera_hunter) | 23 comments I'll add a short one: Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville. After being hired, Bartleby won't leave. He's kind of like What About Bob? (the movie), but much earlier.

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Thomas | 9 comments definitely 'three men in a boat ' by Jerome K Jerome, a classic
