Jenny | 8128 comments Round 2
White covers
Word-SYNTHESIZER

Round 2 Bonus:
Now you've got a collection of instruments, lets go on a tour!

During Round 2 books set in one of the musical cities on the list below earn an additional 5 bonus points. Only one bonus locale per book and a maximum of 10 bonus locations. Books must be at least 50% in the listed city, and you can only visit each city once!

Location List:
(view spoiler)

Important to note that unlike round one, we can only use each city once for the bonus.

Round 3
TIMPANI DRUMS
Yellow covers

Bonus tasks-

For this round, find musical instruments on the cover of your books (any instrument, just has to be obviously an instrument)

Each found instrument will earn an additional 5 bonus points. Only one instrument per book cover and a maximum of 10 bonus instruments. You can find the same instrument multiple times (not least because no one's got time to decide if it's a violin or viola etc etc)

Jenny | 8128 comments Hi all!
I am Jenny, one of the captains for Wheel.
I live in Phoenix with two lovely cats, and I am very much looking forward to the upcoming days when the temperature is lower than 100 degrees!!!!
That is in Fahrenheit for those of you who live in countries that have embraced the metric system. teehee

I am going to guess that most of you have played before, but if you have not, worry not. Everyone loves to answer questions, and questions come up even after we have all read the rules. So ask away.

There is a spreadsheet that we will be using to claim books for tasks and for the spell-it-outs, and any mini-challenges that get tossed our way.
If you are uncomfortable using a spreadsheet, shout out, and we can set up a completion post thread.

There will be links for the tracking spreadsheet (the one the team will use), the rules, the minis, AR Bookfinder, and TinEye, and anything else that seems important in one of the top posts in this thread for reference.

Keep a watch out for friend requests from the captains, and accept them if you are willing please.

Personally I love the big group challenges as it is fun to chat with everyone. I would like to ask that even if you are not much of a chatter, to check in here on this thread once a week, even if it is just to say that you are still alive and kicking.

Me, Angie, and Kaley are hoping that we can keep things fun and lively.

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1992 comments Hi everyone!!

My name is Kaley and I'm one of your co-captains for this Wheel! Super excited to be on team PUNK.

I live in Indiana (in the US) with my husband and our two dogs and one cat. I read a lot of romance and have recently been reading a lot more fantasy (well . . . fantasy romance and romantasy. Some things never change :-P ) but I'm willing to read a little of everything usually.

I've sent everyone on the team friend requests and I look forward to reading and chatting with you all throughout the challenge!

I hope that everyone likes to chat, be and have fun. I mean, come on, we are Punk after all. Shout out, show that energy and your wild-punky selfs!!

Have fun - chat - be crazy......It's too much fun being alive!!

Darling, you've got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
If you say that you are mine

So you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?

Jenny | 8128 comments Trying to imagine The Clash singing that song country style, and I just cannot.

On a side note, when I was a cheerleader in high school, we did a routine to that song. I still remember some of the moves. teehee

message 11: by Tati (new)

Tati | 1357 comments hey everyone!

greetings from Brazil! We are heading into summer, and this one is promising to be a scorcher. I really don't lie hot weather, so I'm definitely not looking forward to it.

I work with pricing, have a corgi, and I tend to read romance and fantasy, with a few non-fiction in between. I absolutely refuse to touch horror books.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments You. Were. A. Cheerleader.

Well, you do have plenty of team spirits and sass... so, yeah, can totally seeing it.

Not, about that routine you were speaking. is there a copy on film?

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8128 comments I will try to remember to grab a picture from a yearbook. No video evidence, I am afraid. But that song is stuck in my head now.

I was a cheerleader, and in choir. Cool kid and geek all at once. I got along with everyone.

Stacey | 897 comments Hello team! I'm Stacey, from Ohio (US). I'm married, have a 16 year old daughter (just started driving!) and a 50 lb rescue lap dog.

I try to read a bit of everything, but tend to do mystery, sci fi, and horror, with a little romance when I need a break. My favorite books tend to be fantastic books suggested by others that are outside of those.

Jenny | 8128 comments Message 3 above now has links to our tracking spreadsheet, rules, etc.
Several of you do not have Wheel shelves set up yet (or I couldn't find them), so please get those up before we begin. Thank you!!!

Feel free to start playing with the spreadsheet, and finding books with lovely bonuses inside!!!

Our spell-out word for the first spin of the wheel is TROMBONE, and our cover color is YELLOW. There is a list of bonus instruments in the text under the spoiler in message 3. If any of you cannot un-spoil the spoiler, let me know and I will post the list.

Since this is a challenge about music, We would love to hear about what kind of music you listen to.

-What was your first concert? (Change this question to favorite concert if you have used "first concert" as a banking password key!!!!)
-What was your most recent concert?
-What did you listen to growing up? Do you still listen to it?
-Have your musical tastes changed over the years?
-What kind of music will you absolutely not listen to?

-And, my perennial favorite Angie question-
---When you are entering a room to ovations and applause, what is the theme song playing in the background?

-And, and, since we are Team Punk, are you a fan of punk rock? Any favorite punk bands?

message 24: by Tati (new)

Tati | 1357 comments ook, good questions.

My first concert ever was Madonna, back when I was in college. My most recent concert was Bono's Surrender, on Broadway (not me, going all the wat from Brazil to NYC to see the guy, oh no LOL). Before that, it was a couple of U2 concerts on their Joshua Tree tour (one in Toronto, were I managed to get a spot by the rail, it was awesome).

Hm... I listened to a lot of rock/pop (U2, Madonna, Eric Clapton, The Corrs, Adele...) and soundtracks (Disney and Andrew Lloyd-Webber mostly), and still do, don't think my taste has changed much over the years.

Hm... I'm not really fond of reggae to be honest (or I've listened to bad reggae music, who knows?).

Theme song? That's a good one. Guess I'll go with a classic: We Are The Champions.

I don't really listen to punk, but I do like a couple of punk songs (London Calling comes to mind)

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8128 comments I got to see U2 on their Joshua Tree tour. I applaud your devotion to going a long way to see them!

Totally with you on the listening to musicals as well. For me it is Sondheim, especially Sunday in the Park with George, Hamilton, Miss Saigon and Book of Mormon.

message 26: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8128 comments My first concert will leave all of you envious beyond belief.
I got to see Shawn Cassidy, and of course, he was wearing tight white satin pants. How cool am I? (I was 12 years old.)

I haven't been to a concert since Covid. But my last one was Roger Waters. I have seen him three times.

I listened to a lot of different stuff growing up. My parents liked folk and country and musicals, so I was a fan of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and the like and Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan.
Then Jim Croce and Carly Simon and Cat Stevens and Carole King came along.
Then my brain got well and truly scrambled as disco came along at the same time I was finding fabulous rock bands, so I listened to The BeeGees and Donna Summer at the same time as The Who and Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.
I still listen to all of it.

My favorite of all time is Pink Floyd. And, as a result of this I cannot listen to bluegrass. Some band made a bluegrass version of The Wall, and I was so appalled when I heard it, (a "friend" made me listen), that I get flashbacks to that experience when I hear bluegrass. Seriously. Worst album I ever heard.

I am a huge fan of punk rock. I listened to the Ramones and The Clash and The Sex Pistols a lot.

My theme song depends on my mood. Sometimes it is Monty Python's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, and sometimes it is Peace Train.

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1327 comments Hi all! Checking in. I’m actually on vacation right now and just stopped in the Hardrock! Lots of good music playing there!

Little about me - married with a 25 year old daughter. I have 3 rescue cats and 1 rescue dog. Love to travel when possible. I’m also a Pittsburgh Steelers fan 😊

First concert I saw was Megadeth and Warlock. I grew up listening to hard rock and it is still my preferred genre. I enjoy 80s hair bands and classic rock as well. I’ve been to a ton of concerts. My favorite hands down (and this surprised me a bit ) was Phil Collins a few years ago. Even though he sat for the concert, it was an AMAZING show.

I’m not a big fan of punk rock. My best friend who was my roommate in college was a fan though and she played it all the time! So I’ve listened to it a lot.

I’ll have to think about my theme song…

Performers you haven’t seen in concert but hope to?
I’d love to see Stevie Nicks!

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8128 comments Hi Carrie!
So cool you went to the Hardrock. Talk about being on point.

If you get to see Stevie Nicks, go for it. I saw her years ago and she puts on a hell of a concert.

message 29: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (carriele1216) | 1327 comments She was just in Pittsburgh and I was on vacation!! Just missed her but I think she has a few other venues not too far away.

Im guessing you and I must be close in age. My very first record for my record player was Andy Gibb. I listened to Shadow Dancing over and over!

I think we may have been on the same team in another challenge as well….

Jenny | 8128 comments Shadow Dancing!!!! Yup, I had that one too.

message 33: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 3147 comments -What was your first concert?
My first concert *should* have been Elvis....but my parents wouldn't let me go! They said I was too young, but I don't recall my age - it was preteen though, probably around 12 or 13.
So, my first was Jimmy Buffet (many years later!) I've a wide range of concerts - Hank Williams, Jr., Janet Jackson, George Strait, Vince Gill, Randy Travis, Reba, Charle Daniels band, Air Supply...

-What was your most recent concert?
It's been a while.... 2019 and it was Josh Turner

-What did you listen to growing up? Do you still listen to it?
I like the other Cassidy brother.... Joan Jett, REO, a lot of different country singers, had the disco phase too. Lol

-Have your musical tastes changed over the years?
They have somewhat changed; but I guess I'm a country girl at heart. Country or Classic rock are my go tos

-What kind of music will you absolutely not listen to?
I will listen most things, some in very short segments! Lol. Probably Rap is the one I listen to least.

-And, my perennial favorite Angie question-
---When you are entering a room to ovations and applause, what is the theme song playing in the background?
Today it would be - The Bitch is Back!

-And, and, since we are Team Punk, are you a fan of punk rock? Any favorite punk bands?
Not a big fan of Punk. I think, until being assigned Team Punk, the Sex Pistols would have been the only band I could have named. Of course now, I've looked up the genre!

Some of my favorites are not on the list, but it is a good overview.

message 35: by Kaley (last edited Sep 30, 2023 07:34PM) (new)

Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1992 comments I had all my answers typed up and just realized they didn’t post! Take two….

My favorite concert was Taylor Swift. Specifically, Reputation tour because we had seats three rows from the back of the stadium and someone from Taylor Nation (her team) upgraded my group to the pit after the last opener. We ran so fast down so many flights of stairs to get into the pit before she took the stage. It was the most amazing experience because we were so close. I don’t think I’ll ever be that lucky again!!

My most recent concert was the Jonas Brothers. (Right before all this drama came out with one of them!)

I grew up listening to a lot of country and rock courtesy of my parents. Starting in high school when I picked my own music I added in a lot of pop-punk/emo/alternative like Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Mayday Parade, Paramore, etc. And some showtunes! (And Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers… lol.)

I would definitely say I’m still a fan of pop and pop-punk, but I don’t listen to music a whole lot anymore just because I’m usually listening to audiobooks. If I’m working and can’t do audiobooks but need noise I’ll do instrumental pop sometimes 🤣

I don’t think I really have a favorite traditional punk band!

Edited to add: forgot the room-entering question this time! The only thing I can think of right now is our wedding reception entrance song….which was music from the Sonic the Hedgehog games. My husband picked it. yes I realize we are an odd pair LOL

message 36: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8128 comments The Taylor Swift concert sounds amazing.

I did a similar thing when I saw The Police on their Sychronicity tour. My date and I had seats in the back somewhere, and we watched for people getting up to go to the bathroom and made our way down to the fourth row before security escorted us back to our original seats.
At least they didn't kick us out!!!!

And Sting was very handsome that close up.

Sharon (sharon_alexandr) | 553 comments Hi everyone! I'm Sharon from Northeast Pennsylvania. I have done Wheel-a-Thon before and am looking forward to being on Team Punk!

I am married to Zach and we have a super cute puppy, Millie (although she's 13, so maybe not technically a puppy). By day, I am the director of our local community foundation. I usually read literary fiction, mystery/thriller, chick-lit, and historical fiction. I like reading and listening to books, especially listening to celebrity memoirs.

For the concert/music questions:
-First concert was Jimmy Buffett.
-Most recent concert (and best concert) was Outlaw Fest with Willie Nelson and Chris Stapleton.
-I grew up on country music and am still a huge fan. Like all millennials, I also love 90s and early 2000s music as well. I am not really a fan of heavy metal.

-When you are entering a room to ovations and applause, what is the theme song playing in the background? This is a GREAT question! I'm going to have to think about it and report back 😂

Jenny | 8128 comments Angie, you mentioning Air Supply (I had totally forgotten about that band), made me wonder if I could remember all of the concerts I went to. Not sure that is possible, but now I am curious how good my brain is today...

36 bands that I can remember this morning. I am only listing bands that others have heard of. I bet a bunch of you can beat that number!

(view spoiler)

After bands, I tried to remember musicals I have seen in person, on Broadway, in the West End, or from touring companies.

20 of these! A lot more if I add in community theater or school theaters. Which I won't. teehee

Jenny | 8128 comments Yeah, but I never got to see Queen or Led Zeppelin. Boo!!!

message 46: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 897 comments -What was your first concert? I think it was Bon Jovi, with Guns n' Roses opening. (Actually, I think my first might have been Liberace with a family member when I was younger)

-What was your most recent concert? Not sure. I don't really do crowds, and haven't been in years. i do go to small music venues and listen to local music - usually piano or ensembles not bands.

-What did you listen to growing up? Do you still listen to it? I did more pop and alternative music. Alternative rock is still my favorite.

-Have your musical tastes changed over the years? Yes and no. My likes have broadened but I still love must of the music I did when I was younger. I did learn to appreciate classical and blue grass, things that I would never have admitted to in my teens.

-What kind of music will you absolutely not listen to? Industrial. 'Music' that is yelling. I'm pretty open other than that.

-And, my perennial favorite Angie question-
---When you are entering a room to ovations and applause, what is the theme song playing in the background? Depends on my mood.
