Our second Group Read for October is Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, big yes to this one as well! Please use spoiler tags to be courteous to others. Can't wait to chat in this thread with everyone about this book.

Chris (fantomeofthelibrary) | 3 comments I voted for this, glad to see it's been chosen! But as this is for October, is there a start date to when we start reading, or?

Hi Chris, the official start date is October 1, but you can start anytime you'd like :) We set up the Group read pages early so that our members have some time to get the book.

Sarah ♡ (let’s interact!) (bookishwelshie) | 80 comments I have had a copy of this sitting on my shelves since release day so will definitely be joining in with this one! Maybe the Grady Hendrix too if I can fit it in between my other October reads 😅🎃 happy reading! So excited for this group read, to see all your thoughts! Hope we all enjoy:)

Nice! I bought the kindle ebook last night as they had some extra point promo if you spend $15 between 9/22-9/25 that ends today.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
That’s always good too!

Abigail | 30 comments Excited to see everyone's opinions! I just finished this one and actually I didn't enjoy it at all. I am sure lots of people will so I can't wait to see what everyone is drawn to.

Kristy Buehler | 59 comments I'm going to give this a go; people have really been talking about it.

Brianna | 31 comments Excited for my very first group read!! I will be joining on this one and just got my Kindle version.

Rachel (rachelunabridged) | 589 comments so excited to see that this one was picked! i still have my digital ARC available so i'm happy to be able to read this one with y'all. i really liked mexican gothic so my expectations are a lil high. 😂

Works great on Kindle. I had an ARC from NetGalley for this one, & I had no problems with the Kindle version. You folks are in for a major treat -- though it's a slow burn getting to the really creepy parts.

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 638 comments When I saw this on the local library shelf, I knew it was destiny (even though I'm already signed up for 3 other group reads in October!)

message 20: by Tom (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tom Mathews | 144 comments I voted for this and will start reading it tomorrow, but when we were nominating books for this month I also took an interest in The Devil's Playground by Craig Russell, another book about a cursed movie. I was able to get the audio version of it from the library and just finished it today think that it is my top horror read of the year so far. I'm looking forward to comparing it to Silver Nitrate and hope that others here will read both and do likewise.

Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) (denis_lamontagne) | 34 comments Started this morning. I enjoyed Mexican Gothic so I am hoping this one is good as well. She is still a new author to me. Fingers crossed!

I thought The Devil's Playground sounded really good too. I have it on hold with the library and hope to get it soon! Even more excited to read it with your "top horror read of the year" comment!

Im also reading the other group pick so will be jumping into this one soon, already got my copy :)

Vanessa | 57 comments I read this in August, and I liked it quite a lot. I'm looking forward to discussing it.

message 26: by Tom (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tom Mathews | 144 comments I'm about a third of the way into this. México, classic horror movies, and nazis. How can this go wrong?

message 27: by Tom (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tom Mathews | 144 comments The new Gloria Trevi calendar had arrived in time for the holidays, and her nakedness would soon adorn all the mechanics’ shops in the city.

Sorry, I couldn't let this line slip by without thoroughly researching the subject.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
Finally got to pick up it up from the library. Hope to read some tomorrow.

Giovanni Farotto (farotto) | 85 comments I liked this book, even better than Mexican Gothic
very nice plot, well defined characters

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
Started reading this morning and already on page 87. The story is really good so far. I like the characters but feel like Ureta is giving all the info a little too freely. I’ve got my eye on him.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
Also this story takes place in October! How perfect is that!

Corey Hoover | 4 comments Just got this in hand. Ended up with a signed copy from my local bookseller. Going to start it this upcoming week and I'll let y'all know how it goes.

message 33: by Tom (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tom Mathews | 144 comments When I first started reading this, I had a niggling feeling that the story was very familiar. Last night I figured it out. Best-selling Mexican horror author Bernardo Esquinca, the author of The Secret Life of Insects and Other Stories, had a story in The Valancourt Book of World Horror Stories, Volume 1 called Señor Ligotti that featured a dapper older gentleman and a classy older apartment. It was also very creepy. The stories are not the same but if you like one, you will very likely enjoy the other.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
Up to chapter 12. Still enjoying it. Still good. I love all the mysticism!

I finished this one. The story is great. Some thing I guessed, most kept me guessing. This doesn’t beat Mexican Gothic as my favorite from her but it does beat out certain dark things & velvet was the night. I liked this a whole lot more than those 2.

LTJ (ltj81) | 2006 comments Hey everyone! This will be the next novel I start probably late tonight or tomorrow and I can't wait! I'm looking forward to reading and discussing this with you all :-)

Awesome :)

Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) (denis_lamontagne) | 34 comments I am 60-65% into it and have been enjoying it so far. It's a slow burner, but at least it's not a boring one, IMO anyhow.
I like the magical elements she has sprinkled in so far, and as much as I feel I know where this is going, I am hoping for some surprises. Fingers crossed!

message 41: by David (new) - rated it 1 star

David (dweber77) | 18 comments Ok someone give me reassurance here. I like the book so far but I’m having a hard time moving through the story. I just hit chapter 6 and I can’t seem to concentrate on the story. Is it just me? Please tell me it gets more gripping.

message 42: by Tom (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tom Mathews | 144 comments It definitely heats up.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments Mod
I thought so David.

message 44: by Bill (new) - rated it 2 stars

Bill | 3 comments I just finished and I was not a huge fan. It was super slow and the final battle felt rushed.

message 45: by LTJ (new) - rated it 2 stars

LTJ (ltj81) | 2006 comments I can tell this is starting out as a slow burn as I'm excited to see when things heat up since I can't wait for the horror to kick in :-)

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm feeling that slow burn too, but still feel invested. I think Monserat and Tristan's friendship is keeping me going.

Erika | 475 comments Getting started with this on audio and I'm several chapters in...it hasn't hooked me yet. Hopefully it takes a turn for me!

L. Smashing (l_smashing) | 83 comments My library hold hit just in time! I've been working on this one for a few days now. Definitely slow burn, but I love her writing. I just wish I knew a little more about Mexican cinema.

message 49: by David (new) - rated it 1 star

David (dweber77) | 18 comments I have hope but had to take a break and burned through The Night Stockers in 4 evening reads. I’ll get back into it tonight and see how it goes. I like the characters but the slow burn is killing me.

message 50: by Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) (last edited Oct 12, 2023 12:07PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) (denis_lamontagne) | 34 comments Just finished it off - yes it's a slow burn and yes it's not that exciting. But I did enjoy it and thought it was a good story. I guess as an author she just doesn't write "edge of your seat" kind of horror. The only book from her that I read before this was Mexcan Gothic, and that was another well written slow burn that I enjoyed.
I give it 3.5 Stars, rounded up to 4 Stars for Goodreads.
