Riding the Highways: Nevada's Highway 50
To Completion

We are heading to The Silver State for our next road trip!

US Highway 50 is over 3,000 miles long starting in Ocean City, Maryland, and running to Sacramento, California. In this challenge we are going to explore the Nevada Portion which has been dubbed the “Loneliest Road in America”. The miles of two-lane highway may be lonely, but it has a lot to offer road trippers. A Highway 50 Survival Guide is available which allows you to receive stamps at specific stops documenting your trip. You even earn a certificate verifying you "survived" this lonely stretch of road.

Here's how the challenge works:
The number of miles traveled from place to place will be the numbers you use to choose your books. You can mix and match one of the below ways to complete the task but please indicate in each post which option you are using.

1. Starting Point: Stateline/Lake Tahoe

Our trip begins in the small community of Stateline in Douglas County, Nevada. It sits on the southeastern shore of the sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe. Sitting at an altitude of more than a mile, it is the second deepest lake in the US and the tenth deepest in the world. It is 22 miles long, 23 miles wide and boasts 72 miles of shoreline. As we set out on Highway 50, the road winds along its eastern shore, revealing breathtaking views of the lake, the surrounding evergreen forests and the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

2. Drive 4 Miles to Zephyr Cove

A great way to get up close and personal with the lake is to stop at Zephyr Cove Beach. Located on National Forest land, it is home to a full-service resort with a restaurant, beach bar, and general store. Activities include boating, parasailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and beach volleyball courts. It is also home to the M.S. Dixie II, a 500 passenger paddle wheeler which offers year-round, narrated cruises of Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay.

3. Drive 8 Miles to Glenbrook

The town of Glenbrook is the oldest town on Lake Tahoe, becoming a community in 1860. Captain A.W. Pray built the first lumber mill here that served as the largest lumber manufacturer in Nevada for many years. A highlight of the area is Cave Rock State Park which features the large rock formation that can be seen from all over the lake. The rock and its caves are considered a sacred site for the Washoe Indians. The “Lady of the Lake” is the profile of a woman’s face that appears on the rock and can be best viewed by boat in the morning or early afternoon hours.

4. Drive 17 Miles to Carson City

Leaving the Sierras by way of Spooner Summit, the highway takes us into Carson City, the state’s capital, named for frontiersman Kit Carson. Though the area looks barren, the region yields a wealth of precious minerals which lured miners here by the thousands in the mid-1800s. The city sprang up overnight, and as area mines paid off, tycoons built impressive mansions, and the city grew by leaps and bounds. For the best look at its historic sites, walk the self-guided Kit Carson Trail that features over 50 landmarks, including the above mentioned mansions, museums, railway stations, and churches, each telling the story of the capital city’s history.

5. Drive 6 Miles to Mound House

Heading out of the capital, be sure to stop for a candy fix at the Chocolate Nugget Candy Factory. The third generation candy making family has been crafting candies and chocolates since 1936. We then come to a small landmark of historic importance. Mound House was the first tollhouse on the Mackay and Fair road between Carson City and Virginia City. Built in 1869, it got its name from the mounds of gypsite found in the area. It was later used by several different railroads.

6. Drive 5 Miles to Dayton

Highway 50 crosses a sagebrush plateau to Dayton, the site of Nevada’s first gold strike. You can learn all about its history at the Dayton Museum run by the town’s Historical Society. Be sure to explore the beautiful riverfront scenery and recreational opportunities at 160-acre Dayton State Park. It has a reputation for being gorgeous regardless of the season, whether the trees are in spring bloom, blazing with color in fall, or canopied in freshly-fallen snow. With gold and silver mining ruins located on site, the park delivers on both beauty and Nevada history.

7. Drive 24 Miles to Silver Springs

With the silence of the desert intensifying, the road continues toward Silver Springs, where we visit Fort Churchill. The old adobe army post was built in 1860, then abandoned nine years later. The visitor center tells the fort’s story, but it is among the crumbling walls that you can really feel the isolation of the place. The Lahontan State Recreation Area, with boating and swimming, lies to the east. Its lake, an improbable oasis in a land that averages less than six inches of rain per year, owes its existence not to the forces of nature, but to the ingenuity of man.

8. Drive 26 Miles Lattin Farms

Our arid desert scenery takes a turn as we head into the lush Lahontan Valley, where the Lattin family has maintained one of Nevada’s largest organic farms for five generations. Growing a wide variety of nutritious produce for the community, their signature item is the Hearts of Gold Cantaloupe, inspiring the yearly Cantaloupe Festival held in nearby Fallon. Visit the onsite bakery and store to purchase local honey and a large array of homemade jarred delicacies. The farm's Fall Festival offers an unbelievable corn maze, hayrides, a scarecrow factory, and, of course, a huge pumpkin patch.

9. Drive 3 Miles to Fallon

With its classic small town vibe and agricultural backbone, Fallon's downtown area is a great place to explore. Check out the farm-to-fork restaurants, then enjoy the local cultural scene at the Oats Park Arts Center, which features concerts and artwork of local artists. Soak up some history at the Churchill Country Museum with its eclectic collection of exhibits. End your visit at Frey Ranch where 165 years of farming expertise and distilling techniques make it a premier grain-to-glass operation, specializing in single-barrel, straight bourbon and rye whiskey.

10. Drive 16 Miles to Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge

Known by wildlife enthusiasts and birders around the world, Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge has been ranked as an area of International Importance by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. This eminent title is due to the thousands of shorebirds that stop here along their migratory routes. With more than 224,000 acres, it hosts a variety of dynamic landscapes, including freshwater and brackish marshes, river corridors, desert shrublands, sand dunes, and an island at a desert lake. This thriving oasis can be explored on foot, or by non-mortorized watercraft.

11. Drive 18 Miles to Grimes Point Archaeological Area

Grimes Point Archaeological Area offers a short interpretive trail that weaves among 150 basalt boulders etched with the state's oldest petroglyphs, many dating back 8,000 years. The rocks also display an unusual phenomenon known as desert varnish, which occurs when manganese and iron combine in arid climates to create a deeply polished red and black appearance. Hidden Cave, a prehistoric Paiute-Shoshone storage site, lies about two miles beyond, which can be toured with a guide. The area is also a key place to see some of the country’s newest and fastest jets taking off from Fallon Naval Air Station.

12. Drive 17 Miles to Sand Mountain Recreation Area

This giant mountain of sand has been an off-roading paradise for decades. Enthusiasts claim Sand Mountain to be ideal for technical and trail riding. Hikers are also welcome on the trails. Of note, it is one of the few singing sand dunes in the world. The natural sound phenomenon, caused by wind passing over dunes, can reach 105 decibels, lasting as long as several minutes. The area is also the only home of the critically imperiled Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly. This dazzling blue-winged beauty is completely dependent on the Kearney buckwheat found in the area, and at great risk of extinction. To protect them, their preferred habitat has been closed to off-road vehicles.

13. Drive 23 Miles to Middlegate

Middlegate is home to two Highway 50 icons. Middlegate Station was established in 1860 as a Pony Express station and is now a real-deal saloon, merging American West history, great food, and ambiance unlike anywhere else. It is also home to the legendary Middlegate Monster Burger. A few miles down the road is another iconic highway landmark - The Shoe Tree. Lots of folklore surrounds the history of this tree, but it is a favorite spot to document your presence here by throwing a pair of your shoes onto this massive cottonwood tree.

14. Drive 48 Miles to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park

A side trip to Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is a definite double-whammy. First there is the atmospheric ghost town of Berlin. Built in the 1890’s, many of its buildings are still standing. Trails through the town tell its story and you can even see the tombstones of many of its original residents. Just a bone’s throw away is the highest concentration of Ichthyosaur fossils ever found. This carnivorous marine reptile swam in a warm ocean that covered central Nevada 225 million years ago. Visitors can take the Fossil House Tour to see the dig site.

15. Drive 62 Miles to Cold Springs Station Resort

For a place to stay or a bite to eat while traveling this remote highway, Cold Springs Station Resort is a friendly way-station. Established near an original 1860 Pony Express site, the resort features a restaurant, bar, gift shop, RV park, cabins and a motel. The mountains surrounding the Station reach altitudes of over nine thousand feet and are popular with off-roaders. Nature watchers also come to see the abundant wildlife, as the mountain ranges host Antelope, Deer, and Big Horn Sheep.

16. Drive 50 Miles to Austin

The historic town of Austin was once the center of the 1862 Silver Strike. Stop at the beautiful pioneer cemetery to pay respects to the people who founded this old west gem. Along main street you will find three historic churches, the International Hotel & Cafe, and some lovely shops including Jason’s Art Gallery that is renowned for its beautiful turquoise jewelry. And just outside town, down a twisting canyon road, lies Stokes Castle, the fanciful creation of a mining baron.

17. Drive 19 Miles to Spencer Hot Springs

Central Nevada is known for its natural hot springs. Visitors and locals have flocked to Spencer Hot Springs for decades. Found in Big Smoky Valley, no matter what time of year you come, it is always perfect, both with its water temps and panoramic views. While soaking, keep your eyes and ears peeled for a charming herd of wild burros that have called Big Smoky Valley home for eons.

18. Drive 12 Miles to Toquima Cave

Nestled in the mountains east of the hot springs is Toquima Cave, home to one of the best examples of pictographs in North America. A pictograph differs from a petroglyph in that it is a drawing rather than a carving. The 300 independent motifs were drawn on the cave walls 1,500 to 3,000 years ago by the Shoshone people who used this sacred rock shelter as a temporary dwelling. Feast your eyes on the vivid symbols that employ all four colors available at the time: red, black, yellow and white.

19. Drive 70 Miles to Eureka

Situated among 9,000 feet peaks, we arrive at Eureka, the state’s best-preserved mining towns. In its heyday it was home to over 9,000 people with its own newspaper office, courthouse, over 100 saloons, and even its own opera house. It is an architectural gem and has been restored to perfection. Today, less than 450 people care for this 19th-century boomtown, and they are proud of its historic landmarks. 20. Drive 76 Miles to Garnet Hill

Garnet Hill draws national attention for the beautifully rich, dark red garnets that are readily found here as the result of the rhyolitic volcanic rock that densely populates the region. The gemstones are buried within the hillsides, and work their way up through the earth. After it rains, it’s not uncommon to find them sitting just above the soil. To increase your chances of scoring some free gemstones, bring a rock hammer and start digging. If you prefer to skip the hunt, you can peruse these gorgeous gems at The Garnet Mercantile in the town of Ely.

21. Drive 4 Miles to Ely

Ely experienced its mining boon in 1906, when copper was discovered. There is lots to see here, but you must visit The Nevada Northern Railway Museum with its antique steam locomotives and machine shop. Ride the Ghost Train of Old Ely that travels the historic tracks to the old mining district. Then head downtown to enjoy the outdoor art gallery that includes over 20 murals and sculptures, all commissioned by the Ely Renaissance Society. Step back in time at McGill’s Drugstore Museum, a perfectly preserved small-town pharmacy and soda fountain from the 1950's.

22. Drive 20 Miles to Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park

Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park tells the story of Ely’s rich mining history. The stars of the park are the six 30-foot-tall, beehive-shaped stone kilns, built in the late 1870's to produce charcoal for the mining smelters. Rumor has it that they later moonlighted as hideouts for stagecoach bandits, too. These mighty historic ovens have been a favorite of photographers for decades.

23. Drive 28 Miles to Osceola - State Historical Marker #98

This historical marker commemorates the town of Osceola, which was once a booming prospecting town after a mind boggling 12-mile gold-bearing quartz vein was discovered in 1872. By the time they closed up shop in 1940, Osceola produced nearly
$5 million in gold. A rough, unpaved road will take ghost town aficionados to the remains of the town, which includes a small cemetery.

24. Drive 27 Miles to Baker

We come to the end of our road trip at the funky little town of Baker, on the Nevada-Utah border. Its claim to fame is being the gateway to the spectacular Great Basin National Park, so you really must take advantage of visiting one of the nation’s least visited national parks while you are here. Great Basin's combination of few people and absolute beauty makes it a true treasure. Hike its peaks to find alpine lakes, navigate its caves to discover stalactites and stalagmites, and experience entire galaxies in its incredible dark skies.

Every year we try cantaloupes and they either don't ripen or rotten when we cut them. Watermelons did not come out good this year either.
