Nasta_lm | 137 comments So I'm listening to the book and I've decided that I'm gald that I'm listening. I usually dont like books written in the epistolary genre but when listening I dont feel as detached as while reading.
And also wanna notice how all characters often praise each other and love each other, how are they always polite and nice. It was cute in the beginning but now I'm a bit tired from how all the characters are good and nice and "dear friends" to each other, how they are ratious and ultimately good.

Nasta_lm | 137 comments there is too much paphos and dramatic talking. and too much talking in general

Nasta_lm | 137 comments well, it was good idea to combine audiobook with crocheting - I didn't need to concentrate on details too much, the plot is simple, and the writing is smooth.

jvickery88 | 120 comments I can picture you listening to this gothic horror but crocheting something so cute haha ..

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed the audio book because the one I am using, is quite annoying. The narrator does a poor Transylvanian/Romanian accent when he speaks as Dracula and it's annoying. I had to choose this version because it is the one that matches the penguin classic version I have. I found one read by Christopher Lee but a lot of the text was not included because it was from the abridged version of the book..

So far, I am on chapter 4 and I like the diary form of it. I try to forget all I know of Dracula already - and I can imagine when somebody read this back in those days to read somebody crawling down the wall like a lizard must have been shocking. It seems with each chapter, another part of Dracula is revealed and he's getting more creepy each chapter.
On first impressions, because of all the movies I have seen about Dracula and Vampires, I didn't expect him to be such a good host haha, he had a full meal ready every night, nice warm candle-lit room. And breakfast also. Imagine to do all this back in those days was a lot of effort.

The critique I have at the moment, is there are already so many things that have happened which would have caused me to not stay and run away... but then again, it seems there are werewolves in the forest and he didn't know his way back... So far, so good though I like it :)

jvickery88 | 120 comments To be honest though, at night, because I don't have headphones for my phone, I read it and not listen.. it seems much more creepy when I read it in my head and picture it. When I use the audio book and read along, it doesn't really seem creepy or scary at all.. Maybe I'll stick to reading myself..

Nasta_lm | 137 comments yeah, I also can understand why people loved it when it was written. but I personally wasn't spooked at all) for me it was more adventure than horror

jvickery88 | 120 comments I wish people still spoke with such eloquence. Dracula is very well spoken - forget the blood-sucking and walking on walls, his true power is his speech..

Speaking of powers, are you sure you don't have none? having finished Dracula so quickly!

Nasta_lm | 137 comments I was just crocheting and listening for the whole weekend watching sister's cat)))

jvickery88 | 120 comments I was thinking maybe we have a separate session for the novels we read? even though I have mentioned many times that in our QA book club we are discussing the novels too - it seems QA topic takes up the time when people turn up .. what do you think

jvickery88 | 120 comments Sounds like the perfect weekend!

jvickery88 | 120 comments Hmm the book gets a little long-winded after the journal of Jonathan.. I am just at the part where van helsing turns up and puts garlic on Lucy .. and in my paperback this is not even halfway through the book yet.. )

Nasta_lm | 137 comments yes, it's not fast-paced book at all) I wish there was a bit more actions and less monologs

Nasta_lm | 137 comments how's it going?

jvickery88 | 120 comments Hey Anastasiya, like Dracula himself, things suck right now. Though I am currently in Dubai and took the book with me :) almost finished

Nasta_lm | 137 comments Dubai! that doesn't sound like "suck" )). hope you're enjoying it, should be warm there. though Dracula is not one of the typical "beach" reading kind. hope its not spoiling the mood))
and regarding others sucking things - if you need to talk with someone - I'm always ready to listen out :)

jvickery88 | 120 comments Happy new year Anastasiya, hope 2024 brings you all the success and happiness you desire..

Finally finished Dracula this morning :)

Nasta_lm | 137 comments Thank you! Happy New Year to you too! Wish you happy life and good books))
And what do you think about Dracula?

jvickery88 | 120 comments Ah thank you that’s very kind of you.
Dracula was ok, I liked the beginning more..it went a bit slow and dry for me throughout the middle part and towards the end, and the ending wasn’t amazing. But yeah considering the impact this book has made I gave it a 3 stars.

Nasta_lm | 137 comments Do you want to continue reading books together here?

jvickery88 | 120 comments Sure thing, if you still wish to?

Nasta_lm | 137 comments Of course! I even have one nice candidate :)
it's Kazuo Ishiguro - "Never let me go"

Nasta_lm | 137 comments or Tana French - The secret place

jvickery88 | 120 comments Seems I have “never let me go” on my to read list too. I’m also starting Harry Potter tonight 🤓🪄🧙

Nasta_lm | 137 comments oo, finnaly! If I remember correctly you haven't read it before? good luck! first book is a kids book, but very nice)

Then "never let me go" is chosen?

jvickery88 | 120 comments I’ve never read them, that’s correct. I’m going in blind with no expectations.
I’ll look for never let me go and tell you when I’ve started …sorry for the long period of no messages, I went abroad and before that got made redundant. If you remember that last QA book club meet, that’s why the mood was pretty low. We had just been told.

Nasta_lm | 137 comments I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you'll find even better place to work very soon! At least maybe your trip helped the mood?)

jvickery88 | 120 comments Yeah hopefully, lots of rejections so far though haha ..still looking. Last day is Jan 22nd..
my mood is pretty good either way.. it’s out of my control so can’t stress too much about such things

Nasta_lm | 137 comments That's a good approach:) I'm one step from being fired myself - too long on the bench and my manager said that I'm on the lists already. Will need such mood too, I guess))

jvickery88 | 120 comments Ah man sorry to hear Anastasiya ..let’s touch base tomorrow maybe?

Nasta_lm | 137 comments sure, let's do it)

Nasta_lm | 137 comments seems like we forgot :D maybe tomorrow then? usual book club time?

jvickery88 | 120 comments Yes, you’re right. Apologies 😪😪
Sure thing, I have another meeting at 3.30 - think we can do 2.45 perhaps?

Nasta_lm | 137 comments Good for me)

jvickery88 | 120 comments Ok - I’ll WhatsApp you closer to the time hopefully I don’t forget this time - apologies

Nasta_lm | 137 comments no worries, I forgot too)
