Ellen | 3570 comments A teen girl attempts to escape the increasing violence of her country of Turkey, the immoral treatment of women and the disfunction of her own family life. Her unusual choice is to climb a tree in the park and live among the branches for as long as possible. She finds an abandoned stork's nest which is large enough for her to use as a tiny bedroom as she considers the life she hopes to leave behind. Even at her young age she has been fairly politically active participating in protests against the government, at one time becoming seriously injured in the ensuing melee with police. Her two best friends were killed by a suicide bomber as they were on a humanitarian trip to deliver toys to children. She recently lost her grandmother, a woman who she was closer to than anyone else. Her mother suffers frequent bouts of depression and her father is absentee. Although she wants to forget everything as she dwells in the treetop her stream of consciousness relates the stories of her short life. Hearing a voice call to her she looks down and sees a handsome teen boy who will become an integral part of her life as they cautiously fall in love.

The girl's story is interesting although it is a bit jumbled at times. I'm not sure I understand her choice of living in a tree but I imagine it is to put her above all the chaos happening below.
