Thea | 5 comments I’m looking for recommendations for my son (12). He loves series like Young Sherlock Holmes, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Top Secret, James Bond from Charlie Higson. So mostly adventure, Teenie detectives and only to some extent fantasy. He liked When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit too and likes history and loves Romans ancient Greeks. He has read all book in this genres at the school library so we kinda need recommendations now. As we are not in an English speaking country, it’s an added difficulty because we need them in German and recommendations online have not always been translated.

Thanks!!

Capn | 297 comments Honestly, he's not too young for the actual Sherlock Holmes stories, and they have certainly been translated! :)

A couple of lists here:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4...
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...

I've just bought some of the "Roman Mysteries" books (begins with The Thieves of Ostia): https://www.goodreads.com/series/5104... I think the main protag is female, though. Haven't read them yet, but am hoping to, soon!
EDIT: same author has a "Roman Quests" series, with a male protag: https://www.goodreads.com/series/1694... , beginning with Escape from Rome
Second EDIT: there are German editions: https://www.worldcat.org/title/112274...

(I also have Rosemary Sutcliff's The Eagle of the Ninth to start - maybe that would appeal to him more?)

Weissen Sie auch "LovelyBooks.de"? z.B.: https://www.lovelybooks.de/stoebern/e...

Thea | 5 comments Yes, he has read the originals too already. Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll look them up!

Good man. :) I hope the others are appealing - it's hard to go on from Conan Doyle! :S The 39 Steps is a free read on ProjectGutenberg or OpenLibrary - it's another (quick) classic worth mentioning. I'm sure it's been translated...

Thea | 5 comments I‘ve never heard about Rosemary Sutcliff before. Then again, my reading interests at his age were definitely not the same! I’m quite sure he would love those books. I’ll add them to his Christmas list. I’m not sure about Roman quest, he may have read it. I’ll have to ask him. It’s so difficult at this age, when local and school library stock has all been read in his genre, to discover new books.

ReaderGirl10 | 1 comments This isn’t necessarily a series but it’s one of my favorite books which is When You reach me by Rebecca Stead and it is amazing

Ms PA | 4 comments Freak the Mighty, Among the Hidden, and Running Out of Time are
a few of the adventure stories available in German translation.

AurorainBookland | 749 comments City Spies City Spies, Book 1 by James Ponti
City Spies, kid spies, read this as a group read on here last year and I so far like the series each character has their own personality and the missions are exciting MC for first book is a girl but there are boy spies and it seems POV point of view switches each book or every few chapters when appropriate for plot

Fires of Invention (Mysteries of Cove, #1) by J. Scott Savage Mystery series only read book 1 but its pretty good MC boy

Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillain (Please Don't Tell My Parents, #1) by Richard Roberts scifi only read the first book MC girl who has a friend, just a friend who's a boy

The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1) by John Flanagan Ranger's Apprentice series read first 2 books MC boy

AurorainBookland | 749 comments Then there's Percy Jackson and the continuation series which are long, both continuation series are long but Percy is a side character in the other 2 series and only shows up sometimes.

But there is the new Percy Jackson series on Disney plus where every season is a book so they might be worth re reading, if you have Disney plus that is.

The Red Pyramid (The Kane Chronicles, #1) by Rick Riordan Kane Chronicles 3 books very entertaining and adventure. Written like a recording by two kids boy and girl. I believe there is an audiobook as well.

Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1) by Eoin Colfer read these in 2020 I believe very good. Artemis is 12 in the first few books I believe then he's 13 for the rest?

And that's all the recs I have at the moment that might appeal to a boy other than one graphic novel series

Amulet Book #1 The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi only read first 8 of the 9 books as book 9 just came out and I need to re read the first ones again.

@Lynn this is a bit late (like 5 months lol) but your recommendations are so great! I actually read some of them when I was a kid.

I wonder if you or anyone else knows of any teen/mg vampire books. I’ve tried searching on the internet but often there are hidden gem finds that you only hear off from word of mouth and don’t come across on a generic website list

Ilsen | 522 comments There’s this one MG vampire book that I read as a kid. It was something like her sister is a vampire and I thought it was cute. If I remember the title, I’ll link it.

Edit: I’m pretty sure it’s this one. It may be too young for now but I remember I liked it as a kid.

Switched Switched (My Sister the Vampire, #1) by Sienna Mercer

If anything, I found a list on Goodreads that has middle grade vampires. Also I forgot that I owned this but Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting is a diverse middle grade about vampires if you are interested. Also I loved Garlic and the Vampire even though the focus isn’t entirely on vampires.

AurorainBookland | 749 comments That series is great but it was discontinued in the US but it's not typical vampires which I think is more of what Kadi wants based off her reviews of other books

I think Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting fits more into the actual vampires. Maybe she will like it. I still haven’t read that one though!

AurorainBookland | 749 comments maybe. I found a whole list of MG vampire books on here and I was shocked there was so many.
