I think I was in just the right mood to read this book. I really liked it. It reminded me a bit of Raymond Chandler’s mysteries, with the complex plot. I had to pay attention to how all the characters were involved together, but the author made sure to explain the connections at the end of the story.
Am I the only one to have the image of a hard boiled detective movie? But one of the parodies, like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid? It's a list of clichés. lol
Like I said, I was in the mood for something like this so I enjoyed reading it. It was fun and fit this group’s theme of being Classic TRASH. I’m not looking for great Literature when I come here, lol.
Heh, I saw Steve Martin, but Leslie Nielsen would be great too. And imagining them saying the lines and acting it out is making it vastly entertaining! It's trash, but enjoyable cliched trash.
It turns out there was a 32 episode Mike Shayne TV show with Richard Denning as Shayne. He's pretty dreamy. It looks like there are some episodes on YouTube. I might have to check them out. There was also a movie series from the 40s, some of them with Hugh Beaumont from Leave it to Beaver.
Brett Halliday started writing these books in the late 30s and one of the reasons this one might seem so cliched is because he helped create those cliches.
