NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11201 comments Wow, this was such a wonderful read! I loved The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, and I can see how his mother’s background stimulated his imagination when writing that story. I feel the need to read everything else he wrote now.

James McBride grew up in a large Black family, raised by a mother who described herself as light skinned. She never revealed her true background to her children until she gave in to James’ repeated questions. I don’t think I’ve encountered a fictional character or story quite like this before. I especially admired her ability to ensure that her (11!) children received a good education despite many financial and practical challenges.

I’m a little rushed now, but I’d love to hear other’s thoughts about this book, and how it may have informed McBride’s other books.

Holly R W | 3172 comments Nancy, I read this years ago when it was first published. We discussed it at the time in my synagogue's book group. It must have had a deep impact on me, as I remember it even now. I continue to read McBride's books and do think that his unique background has contributed to how he looks at the world.

Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 804 comments I loved this book. What a wonderful woman his mother was. I've enjoyed several of McBride's books and done a little reading about him. He's also a musician and composer. I was fascinated to learn how close he came in his teens to going down the wrong road. I'll always remember his mother's beautiful answer to his question about the color of God: he's the color of water.
