Great news, long list Dec 13!!!

Great to have some dates to look forward too!!

Very exciting! They seem to have moved up the schedule this year, I feel like we normally wait til Jan for even the long list. I like it, more time to read things!
Do you know if the debates will be earlier, Susan?

I'm excited to get this list a little sooner than usual, but the Canada Reads longlist seems so arbitrary to me. The only book I've read previously is The Innocents.

Exciting - all new to me. I do own The Innocents, but haven't read it yet, so that will be on the list for sure. I agree that some of the choices don't seem obvious for Canada Reads, just judging on covers and descriptions, but maybe that will make it interesting.

An interesting(?) list. I have only read Bad Cree, and part of The Innocents. It was too heavy. I put it aside when it first was published. I am happy for more time to navigate the list. New titles to ponder. Enjoy everyone!

I have now read Shut Up You're Pretty from the longlist. It is billed as a story collection, but it is really a novel in stories. All of the stories have the same narrator/main character and the stories progress more or less chronologically.

I enjoyed it and finished it quickly. Many of the stories are pretty raw. There is a lot of sex and some substance use. It could be an interesting choice for Canada Reads, and I would expect someone on the young side to defend it (as it's basically a coming of age story).

A pattern I’ve seen before is that when an old book makes the longlist, it’s almost always on the short list, so I’m guessing we’ll see The Innocents there. I haven’t read any of these, so I’ve got some work to do!

Huh. Just had a chance to look deeper at the long list. I don’t know how I feel - I guess only a few have really piqued my interest. Maybe that’s the point - open up new book options to people, get us out of old patterns. I’ll see if I can get started with whatever is available at the library at this point.

@Allison, I think I know exactly how you feel with the huh....it's a strange list.

I finished reading Happy Hour from the longlist. I wasn't sure about this one at first but I warmed up to it. It's the story of two friends in their early twenties scraping by in NYC for a summer. It had an amusing charm that I finally relaxed into.

Frankly, though, I would be surprised to see this on the shortlist because I'm not sure what the discussion points would be. It seems like there are other books about young women on the longlist that might have more to offer to a debate.
