Here is a topic for general conversations, they can be off-topic if you like!

Jesse | 23 comments I went to second-hand store yesterday and found a really cool old copy of The Book of Lost Tales II by Tolkien, as well as The Midway Bus by Steinbeck. The latter I was shocked to find, since it is not one of his most known works, but I'm so stoked I did. Sometimes, you can find great books at second-hand shops, just got to be willing to look. But overall, two awesome finds! Glad I was forced to go op-shopping.

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments I second that Jesse! I went to a book fair yesterday and found a second-hand copy of The Time Traveller by HG Wells and it's gorgeous!

Jesse | 23 comments Ooh, nice! I still haven't read Wells, but I would like to read one of his works. Have you read any before?

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments nope, absolutely new to it, i will tell you once i get into it

I've read two of his works, namely The Island of Dr. Moreau and The War of the Worlds. :)

rina.reads | 102 comments omg guys I've just discovered a Victorian Christmas novel in audiobook narrated by none other than Richard Armitage! 😍
It's The Christmas Hirelings by M. E. Braddon.

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments whoa never heard of him, what's the book about? (important: is it short? can i squeeze it in my itty bitty christmas read? please say yes)

He's the actor who played Mr. Thornton in the BBC miniseries adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's "North and South"! 😍

It's basically about a family drama during Christmas, but it sounds very heartwarming!
Running time of the audiobook is only 3 hours and 53 mins!! So I think you can squeeze it in. It's on Audible. :)

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments i don't do well with audiobooks :( but a family drama? count it on the list! (also i live in the 1800s and don't watch television, so once more, zero idea on what that is)

Audible is from Amazon, it's for their audiobooks. But you can of course read The Christmas Hirelings as a novel! I just thought it splendid that Richard Armitage narrates the audiobook version of it.

"North and South" is a victorian novel about Margaret who moves house with her father to the north of England and there encounters the reality of working in the cotton mills and meets Mr. Thornton, who owns a mill. It has shades of "Pride and Prejudice" and "Jane Eyre", so if you like those two novels, check out "North and South"!

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments okay i am ready to get mass hate from the entire community but i don't like pride and prejudice, it's extremely tedious and monotonous in my opinion, and austen's wit that fans so highly speak of is so mild that it's almost negligible. i had to dnf p&p and found the film only mildly interesting solely because of the lead cast and the picturesque atmosphere. (once again, please don't kick me out of here)

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments sorry rina, i don't think i will be reading north and south :(

message 15: by rina.reads (new)

rina.reads | 102 comments hahah absolutely no problem! I'm also not the biggest Austen fan!
With that being said, I just compared P&P to North and South because the dynamic between the two main characters reminded me of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. North and South is much more concerned with the impact of the industrial revolution on society.

remi.☘︎ ݁˖ (exiledcrown) | 58 comments NOO now that sounds interesting. I will add it to my piling tbr, thank you!

Jesse | 23 comments After just finishing The Grapes of Wrath, I now moved onto The Wayward Bus by Steinbeck. I found it at a second hand store and so far, it's great for one of his lesser known works.

That's great! East of Eden is a top three book of all time for me. I think you'll enjoy it!
I surprisingly really liked The Wayward Bus. While not being one his best works, it still was very enjoyable and interesting. Definitely recommend if you like Steinbeck :)
