Lis | 4038 comments Happy 2024!! I’m finishing an ARC that releases this week from Rebecca Zanetti’s Deep Ops series, Frostbitten. Also been working my way through A Court of Thorn & Roses series by Sarah Mass, listening to #4 A Court of Silver Flames.

Steph (angel4492) | 32785 comments Happy 2024 to you, too! I liked book 1 of DO ok, but not enough to jump into more. Maybe need to return to it.

I haven’t read the other, but see it everywhere.

I’m finishing my re-read of Dark Queen for our ‘23 series read. Need a palette cleanser after my month of Christmas books 😜 and my OCD is pushing me to complete the challenge, even if several days late.

Sandra | 25914 comments I've started Hallowed Games its ok so far, just a bit YA for my taste (a bit gothic even)

Re-reading Tie Me Knot pseudonym of Honor Raconteur, which is a lot of fun, ghosties & things that stab them.

Already read my Secret Santa paperback Blood Heir 5 stars of course.

Steph (angel4492) | 32785 comments Eh, I'll wait on that one then. Not in the mood for YA right now.

I'll take a look-see.

Yay! 😁 Loved that one! Hoping for more.

Kateblue Currently reading (too many at a time)

Legend -- put this aside over a month ago at 1/3 through and now cannot remember anything. Will I start over? Not sure

The Legacy of Arniston House. I'm liking this fourth book better than the 3 previous because the MC finally quit BITCHING about everything

I Bring the Fire Part 1: Wolves just started not sure yet, but the author seems to write well. Been on my TBR for years. The author has an email list for cheap and sale books, so I thought the least I could do was read something of hers.

The Forest Grimm random library book that I may abandon, though it seems ok so far.

A Canticle for Leibowitz. A Hugo award winner that is SLOW as SNOT

Just finished.

She Who Knows eh, it was better than ok and very quick, but meh. I gave it four stars and probably need to reduce it to three

Spoonbenders. Even though I didn't like any of the characters (usually a must for me) I ended up rooting for them and happy with it. i can recommend this one.

The Wild Robot cute, though I ended up skipping some paragraphs. A kid's book. Happy feelings

Kateblue I read The Lazy Girl's Guide to Magic https://www.goodreads.com/series/2025...

I also read the beginnings of one about werewolves, but I quit. Didn't even get through the first book. Did I say shifters were not my favorites? But. I am really likingOath Sworn. I'm in about 20%

Darn, I have it checked out from the library. I've been slowly watching it expire. Think I have 4 days? And this doesn't give me any impetus.

LOL
I so much like it better than the cartoons that we are getting today.

Zoi wrote: "Amyiw wrote: "Zoi wrote:

Ah, too bad. I already read FUC series though I think there is one that is released after the last I read; Roo something was my last... I think. I like the fluff but only when it makes sense and the woman isn't a TSTL character all the time (part I can sometimes forgive). I've liked some of the T.S. Joyce bear shifters (and yea, they all have no shirts. :-P)

Just finished
Sweeping S'Ride (Space Janitor #4) by Julia Huni , argh, first one that doesn't have my vote though it probably is a transition to the spin off. This series is quite fun and good. This one eh, 3 stars.
Green Vampire (Mackenzie Green #4) by J.S. Kennedy another 3 and I think I might stop here. This started much better than this. This was 3 1/2 but not quite there, like the first which was 4 1/2, though this didn't have a cliffhanger like the second nor did it drag like the 3rd with the idiotic ending. It was pretty good with enough left in the air to pull you in but wasn't great like the first. I might come back some day but no plans currently.
Darling Beast (Maiden Lane, #7) by Elizabeth Hoyt What I Did for a Duke (Pennyroyal Green, #5) by Julie Anne Long When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Fairy Tales, #2) by Eloisa James , getting those old TBRs off the shelf only the Duke got 4, the others 3.
Felt I had to clear the palate after so many 3s so reread
Lights Out (Into Darkness, #1) by Navessa Allen , which I just finish my first time a little over a month ago. What a hoot, even the 2nd time around. 5
and my series read along
Family and Honor (Jacky Leon, #2) by K.N. Banet #2, was even better than the first. I do not know if I'm going to be able to wait for the months to go by to read it. It is good enough for a reread so might just binge and reread for the series read. So far I have enough to occupy me that I have not done that yet. 5

I'm reading
Bonded in Death (In Death, #60) by J.D. Robb , really liking it so far. Cannot believe this is the 60th full novel (been 11 novellas but not since 41.5 in 2015) I would have never read on but for a series read which had me hooked by #7. Until then I kind of liked them but wasn't sold. Going back and knowing the characters got me to like the beginning better.

I'm about 10% in-no time to read today. I wasn't sold on the first "in Death," but I got hooked at number 2. I got the first book at the same time I got the first Anita Blake book by Laurell K. Hamilton. (Both recommendations by Jacqueline Lichtenberg, a great and very underrated author. I need to put her series on the UF list. I knew I forgot someome in the favorite authors list :-) -- )

Anyway, I REALLY got hooked on both of the series. And then Anita got weird, but Eve Dallas just keeps going, and going, and going. Though I have to say some of the "in Death" are not as good anymore. But still, I will read them all. Unlike Anita. With her, I WANT to, but then, I just don't

P.S. Taking a break from Jacky to read this most recent "in Death," The Maid and the Crocodile (pretty good and I am over halfway) and to try to finish A Canticle for Leibowitz. I gotta say, the latter is actually getting better, though I am skipping some paragraphs, and still only at 20%.

I should start Jacky #2 by the end of the week.

Amyiw | 237 comments Zoi wrote: "The Forgettable Miss French (Shadowvale, #3) by Kristen Painter"

I never went back to Shadowdale. I thought the first was good but it wasn't a pull.

@ KateBlue here are some of the cartoonish covers that I read recently some better than others.
Mr. Heartbreaker (The Nest, #1) by Piper Rayne We'll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida The Guncle (The Guncle, #1) by Steven Rowley
Assistant to the Villain (Assistant to the Villain, #1) by Hannah Nicole Maehrer (not so bad) as no people.
And here are some others
How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #1) by Molly Harper Miss Frost Saves the Sandman (Jayne Frost, #3) by Kristen Painter The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3) by Kristen Painter
Almost all rom coms have them now
Funny Story by Emily Henry Book Lovers by Emily Henry The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood etc...

I would rather the naked man, but maybe not on my paperback while on the subway or other public transport. (the cartoon characters are about the same)
I like the Shadowdale covers but they don't have people on them

On a slight slide. Here are the old and new covers of the Immortal After Dark series
A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #1) by Kresley Cole A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #1) by Kresley Cole No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole No Rest for the Wicked (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole
Which do you like better?

message 22: by Kateblue (new)

Kateblue I am reading Kindles so no one sees the covers. I kind of like the rom com covers with the little cartoons the best. But I am not sure they would be the same kind of book that the bare chests are. Wouldn't the bare chest covers have more explicit sex in them ? That's what they give the impression of to me, anyway

message 23: by Amyiw (last edited Feb 13, 2025 02:14PM) (new)

Amyiw | 237 comments I'm on to
Dragon Prince (Dragon Prince, #1) by Melanie Rawn which is old as dirt on my TBR pile.

Gave Bonded in Death 5 stars. I was missing some of my characters like Mavis, Trina, etc... but it had a really good plot and some interesting new characters.

Snagged the audio for Bonded in Death (In Death, #60) by J.D. Robb and enjoying a little Dallas and Peabody banter...

Kateblue How to Summon a Fairy Godmother. which is ok, but is not the best. I have been skipping some paragraphs during the quests or tasks because bored now. But the rest is pretty good. Will be three or four stars, prob four

Amyiw | 237 comments Kateblue wrote: "Wouldn't the bare chest covers have more explicit sex in them ? That's what they give the impression of to me, anyway.."

Exactly right? But the PNR with the graphic sex are going to the "art" covers too and you really cannot tell by the covers at all, wish you could as some times my mood is for it and some times not so much.

So have you read Immortals After Dark? They definitely have explicit sex scenes so give me the sexy covers so I know it, thanks. I don't think the new covers are good for the content at all. Maybe it is cost? I like the Italian covers better if that is the reason. Same books as above
Dark Love (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole & Dark Pleasure by Kresley Cole

Dragon Prince (Dragon Prince, #1) by Melanie Rawn was really good but not my thing. It is Epic fantasy that has a lot of politics and wars/battles. There is a great romance going on and that is probably why so many loved it at the time but it also has rape and torture, graphic maiming. I think this is why I never have started Martin A Game of Thrones. (probably the page count too)
I finished
Bonded in Death (In Death, #60) by J.D. Robb and loved it. Wish it had a little more of side characters though. Still I gave it a 5

She seems to have a few series like that, where there are 3 or 4 books and that is it. I thought Gunnie Rose was going to stop at the 4th but she has gone on. Midnight Texas was a 3 book too. I think she gets to a pretty good wrap and ends it which really is kind of nice in a way.

I finally started a buddy series read of The Seven series. The first was a pretty good PNR that I thought was a bit different than many. Not all of the nuances are explained to the FMC and that kind of irked. Still I will have no problem reading on with the buddy read.
Seven Years (Seven, #1) by Dannika Dark

Me too, but I guess she probably got all wrapped up in the Southern Vampire series. If you look here: https://www.fantasticfiction.com/h/ch... , you can see that Grave Sight is written during the middle of the writing of the Sookie Stackhouse (a/k/a Southern Vampire) series. So probably she just went where the demand was. Too bad, though, although she did kind of leave the Grave Sight characters in a good place.

Three Half Goats Gruff (Valkyrie Bestiary #0.5) by Kim McDougall was a really fun short. Introduction to the characters.

I'm not sure if I'll reread from the start as I've read the first 3 only last year, and I was waiting to start Green Vampire so I could get back into it... but... tempting 😆

On a blog’s comment from an author I love….someone suggested Dungeon Crawler Carl (Dungeon Crawler Carl, #1) by Matt Dinniman and I must say I’m pleasantly surprised . I even had the first book in my kindle freebie since….2021. Better late than never I guess.

I can see that as it seemed like a transitional book to me without much of the over arc getting solved and lots of new characters but I loved the building of her sister and her relationship.
I've read Reaper, Hunted, and Viper, trying to catch up to our buddy read Legion; but time for a break so next month. Gave the three 3, 5, and 4 stars in that order. Hunted was one of my favorite of the series.

Read Beauty and the Baller as a buddy/BOM read in another group. Don't usually love CR but gave this 4 1/2 CR stars and bumped up for humor and light drama.

Got back to Black Hat Bureau, Black Truth, White Lies and found that my memory took awhile to kick in and it was necessary. Ended up being slightly better than good but only 3 stars from me but probably was my own issues with putting it down for too long and not rereading. 3 1/2 stars as the characters were really good in the end.

Got back to Scarlet to finish the first trilogy, Hunter's Trail, didn't have the same issue with remembering the characters and how they fit. 4 Definitely want to go to the next trilogy of Scarlet now. I read the Boundary series though some books have come out there since I read them. It was a trilogy when I picked it up.

Just finished The Last Stand of Mary Good Crow, this is just not my genre though I ended up really liking it and gave it a 4. I probably won't read on though.
