I was so lucky to received a gifted copy of The Future (thank you Wanda)!! It is a cautionary tale... a message that we need to take care of our environment and of others. it is all about resilience... resilience of people, of nature and of moving forward despite challenges. It shows the strength of family (and importance of a grandmother).
I read it before it was announced as part of the short-list and have continued to think about it!

I had a hard time with this one despite loving the beauty of the language, and it containing two of my well-loved tropes (alive houses and kids running off to live in the wildnerness).I found the first section (Gloria) a little slow, and then the second section (kids) there were too many kids to keep track of them all. And then things just got bizarre! I think maybe the lack of rules about what was happening was hard to take (view spoiler)
I feel like this book is one that a good panelist could totally turn me around on though - a couple good explanations for things I missed or didn't connect and this book could shoot up in my estimation.
I enjoyed your review of Denison Avenue, Allison. My only struggle with that one was how sad it was. I needed to take breaks.
I didn't post my thoughts when I finished this was one so I'm copying my review in here:If it wasn’t for Canada Reads, I’m not sure I would have stuck with this book. The first section (all Gloria) bored me to tears. Once we got to the kids with their Lost Boys’ vibes, I was a bit more engaged, but overall this one fell pretty flat for me. I had no idea what was happening half the time and I wasn’t invested enough to care. It’s well written and I could probably glean more from a re-read (hence the three stars), but I just wasn’t that into it.
