1. Track's Sign
The route is marked at regular intervals by triangular signs, most of which have the symbol of the Wagyl, or Rainbow Serpent, a mythological creature of the arboreal culture which takes different names among the various populations. Wagyl is the name used by the Noongar. It owes its name to the fact that it reveals itself to the indigenous population as a rainbow that moves through rain and waters, shaping landscapes, and punishing or rewarding people. In short, it is a powerful creature that can be creative, but also dangerous.
✱ Read a book with a triangular object on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a dangerous character (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in WAGYL (ignore A, An or The).
2. Start: Kalamunda
The track starts at Kalamunda, an eastern suburb of the city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Before starting the trail, be sure to visit this bustling city which is known for its sunny beaches. An important nesting area has been identified near Kalamunda in the Mundaring-Kalamunda Important Bird Area, which is adjacent to the Beelu National Park. It is worth dedicating yourself to some birdwatching, knowing that two species of black cockatoos, a bird similar to the parrot, are widespread here.
✱ Read a book with a specific bird mentioned in the text (share text) OR
✱ Read a book set in a big city (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in MUNDARING-KALAMUNDA IMPORTANT BIRD AREA (3 word minimum).
3. The Darling Range
This is the longest section of the trail (211 km or 131 mi) spanning the two towns of Kalamunda and Dwellingup. For much of the route you travel along the Darling Range, crossing eucalyptus forests that feature over 700 different species of these tree, with karri, wandoo and jarrah being the most prevalent. You also have the opportunity to see the Mundaring Weir, a dam dating back to the late 1940's. The dam is subject to overflows, the last of which was in 1996. We will use the dam to cross the Helena River.
✱ Read a book with more than 700 reviews on its GR homepage (share number) OR
✱ Read a book with the word DARLING or RIVER in its title OR
✱ Read a book published in the 20th century (tell us when).
4. From Dwellingup to Balingup
After leaving the mining town of Dwellingup (one of the largest bauxite mines in the world is located nearby), you come across the Lane Poole Reserve. Created in 1990 by merging six previous reserves, it protects native forests and woodlands, as well as a part of the Murray River, one of the few rivers that have not been dammed in this part of Australia. Hikers take advantage of this waterway, which at times can be traveled by canoe or kayak, but many will be attracted by the waterfalls and rock pools that characterize it.
✱ Read a series book #6 OR
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in LANE POOLE OR
✱ Read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found in MURRAY RIVER.
5. From Balingup to Pemberton
The Balingup area is known for the production of fruit and vegetables. This section travels through both well-developed agricultural areas, and protected areas. One such is the Greater Beedelup National Park, whose main attraction is the Beedelup Falls. During this part of the route you will notice several imposing trees, and upon reaching Pemberton, you will even have the opportunity to climb one of the two karri trees present: the Gloucester Tree and the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree. Both are more than 60 m (200 ft) tall, and have metal rungs that allow visitors to climb to the constructed lookouts at the top. A third tree, the Diamond Tree, was closed to climbing in 2019.
✱ Read a book set on a farm OR
✱ Read a book with one or more trees on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book where a character goes climbing (briefly share details).
6. From Pemberton to Walpole
In this section, 110 km (68 mi) long, you will finally reach the ocean after hiking through a forested area that was hit by the worst bushfire in Western Australia in 2015. The culmination of this stretch is represented by the D'Entrecasteaux National Park, which owes its name to the French admiral who first arrived here. The park covers approximately 130 km (81 mi) of coastline between Augusta and Walpole and is characterized by white beaches, rugged coastal cliffs and towering forests.
✱ Read a book where a fire occurs or one with a character that is a fireman (tell us which) OR
✱ Read a book published in 2015 OR
✱ Read a book with a page count that includes a 1, 3 or 0 (share page count).
7. From Walpole to Albany
On the last stretch of trail, which is approximately 120 km (75 mi) long, you will encounter the Valley of the Giants. Be sure to take advantage of the Tree Top Walk which takes you to a height of 40 m (131 ft), among the treetops. You will also cross two other parks: William Bay NP, where the Elephant Rocks (large granite boulders) create a kind of protected swimming pool much appreciated by children, and West Cape Howe NP, which is practically on the doorstep of your final destination.
✱ Read the last book in a series OR
✱ Read a book set in a National Park (tell us where) OR
✱ Read a book that has all the letters in ROCKS in the title (any order).
8. Arrival: Albany
The final destination of this hike is the port city of Albany. Founded in 1826, the city retains several ancient buildings, almost all of which can be visited. Of course, the city is also known for its beaches, but be careful because many people have drowned here due to the huge waves that are capable of dragging a person off the rocks. But to end in a more pleasant way, know that you are also in a popular wine-growing area, so a good glass of local wine would be an excellent way to celebrate the end of your journey!
✱ Read a book set in the 19th century (tell us when) OR
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR homepage OR
✱ Read a book where drowning is mentioned (share text).
9. Munda Biddi Trail: A Cycling Alternative
The Munda Biddi Trail runs almost parallel to the Bibbulmun Track. Completed in April 2013, this route runs from Mundaring (another Perth suburb) to Albany, and is the longest off-road cycle path in the world. “Munda Biddi” means “path through the forest” in the Aboriginal Noongar language. Here too the route is marked by yellow triangles, but the image is obviously different. The cylcing path requires the use of a mountain bike, and it is not recommended to ride it during the summer.
✱ Read a book where a character rides a bicycle (tell us who) OR
✱ Read one of the longest books on your TBR (share page count) OR

Trail and Tasks
✱ Read a book with a triangular object on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a dangerous character (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in WAGYL (ignore A, An or The).- What Was the Titanic? by Stephanie Sabol - 2/23/24-

Jan, one of the options for task #7 is to read a book set in a National Park. Does it have to be an official National Park, or would an area that falls under the National Park Service umbrella work? I just finished one of the Anna Pigeon books that is set in/around Natchez Trace, Mississippi. It isn't technically a National Park, but most of the staff there work for the NPS.

Trail and Tasks
✱ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in WAGYL (ignore A, An or The).
Greenglass House by Kate Milford 2/11

✱ Read a book with the word RIVER in its title

✱ Read a book published in the 20th century (tell us when).

Published 1983
✱ Read a book with an MC whose first name starts with a letter in LANE POOLE
Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett 2/6

✱ Read a book where a character goes climbing (briefly share details).

Camilla and Simon climb the cliffs around Delphi several times.
✱ Read a book with a page count that includes a 3 (share page count).
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons 2/6

✱ Read the last book in a series OR
The Mislaid Magician; or, Ten Years After by Patricia C. Wrede 2/22
✱ Read a book tagged HISTORICAL on its GR homepage
Sackett's Land by Louis L'Amour 2/27

Let's join Patrizia as she takes us to Western Australia.
The Bibbulmun Track extends for just over 1,000 km (623 mi) between Kalamunda, east of Perth, and Albany. It owes its name to an indigenous population from the Perth area, who are actually better known as the Noongar people. The first part of the track was opened in 1979, but since then the route has changed twice due to problems that arose in the forest it crossed. In fact, the route passes almost exclusively through national parks or state forests.
✱ The track is divided into 58 stages, each of which can be covered in one day, apart from the first which is longer. Normally the path is traveled from north to south.
✱ At the end of each section you will come across a town or an equipped campsite.
✱ The entire route takes 6 to 8 weeks to complete, but most hikers tackle small sections of the trail, hiking for one to a few days.
✱ The best time to hike the trail is between September and November when spring blooms are at their peak. In summer it is particularly hot and water becomes difficult to find outside of the campsites.
Complete 9 tasks (one from each section).
Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. Please post cover if it is task appropriate. When you have completed the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and repost in a new message, letting us know it is completed.
