Nominate a 2023 or even 2024 book - a novel, novella or anthology for April 2024

I'll nominate The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler. I liked his debut novel, so I'm interested to find out if it was a once-off or if he's an author to keep following.

I hope it is as good as the debut one. With his short prose, which led me to 'discover' him, he is mostly great, but with a few flops

MH | 304 comments Glad to see Tusks of Extinction nominated. And I'll throw in The Lost Cause because someone has to.

I'll second The Lost Cause and won't nominate anything for April.

I suppose Thornhedge gets an auto-nomination, since it was #2 on the March poll?

Yes, definitely!

I nominate Hopeland by Ian McDonald

Rebecca | 406 comments I'll nominate The Tainted Cup, I really like his Foundryside series and excited to see what he puts out next.

Ok, and if we need more, I was torn between nominating the above and The Dead Take the A Train. Its not our normal fare but looks interesting.

I planned to get into his Foundryside , but they are still TBR for me.

Just finished Thornhedge & liked it a lot. A worthy nomination for the group.

MH | 304 comments As always, we're spoiled for choice.

When I started this group, we had two books per month, but most members haven't coped to reading both... do you think we should return to 2 monthly reads?

message 14: by MH (new)

MH | 304 comments I didn't regard it as mandatory, and didn't read every book on time (partly availability, but sometimes preference). But I wouldn't mind having the extra direction to point me at things I might not necessarily try. The group has been a very good discovery mechanism from my POV.

There is a general problem that the more choices members have, the less active they are in individual threads. And if we have say just a couple of members per thread, usually there is no real discussion. Therefore, I'm very interested in what members prefer

It looks like The Tusks of Extinction and Thornhedge are the top two in the poll results. I think the group should read them both, as they are both quite short.

Yes, I think two novella-length works are manageable

message 19: by MH (new)

MH | 304 comments I like that (having read one already)

Stephen Burridge | 235 comments I was at the local Indigo book store today and noticed The Tusks of Extinction priced at $36 Canadian, for a 98-page hardcover. I intend to read it, but I won’t be buying one of those.

Yeah I don't know what Tordotcom is smoking by thinking that price is okay.

I found it for $9 at BMV in Toronto though.

I hope that my library will have an e-book by April. These prices are crazy esp. compared with what we have in Ukraine (lower incomes - lower costs - lower prices). Say the translation of The Way of Kings (a doorstopper!) is UAH 350 (less than US$10)

Rebecca | 406 comments Here's hoping, just check and my library has both audio and kindle versions.
