Ice is right, it's a leap yearEllie I've been wondering about your silence. Hope things are OK in your world.
Petra thanks for your encouragent. I'm going out today for the first time on my own. And I'm reading.
Finished the Palestine Speaks anthology and attempting to track the people down that I got so close to in reading. What a wonderful series
I have figured out a way to put glasses on my sunglasses so I am reading. For a couple of days after the surgery I mostly slept and listened to an audiobook which I picked especially for my convalescence. It's actually been soothing, intruiging, and informative at the same time: the Librarian of Burned Books by Brianna Labuskes. Also engaging is the Light Pirates by Lily Brooks-Dalton.
And Real Estate by Deborah Levy is the perfect book for me to be reading right now. I believe Ellie is a big fan.
I kinda forgot about Canada Reads. Am not much on internet these days because brightness.
It would cheer me up considerably to hear from our frequent fliers and those lurking in the lobby.
Yay on finding a way to read while your eyes are healing! I have a lot of books that I'm currently reading:
Silent Bite in audio format. It's another light, fun Andy Carpenter murder/mystery. I listen to this while I'm out running and find that it's perfect entertainment for this time outside.
Dust is the final book of the Silo trilogy. I am really enjoying this entire trilogy and this book is no exception (so far).
An Important Family seems to be a family saga about pioneering in New Zealand. I've barely started this book and it has a few mysteries hinted at. One of the families that is emigrating is hiding something. I'm curious to know what.
Petra I think you would like The Light Pirate. It is one of those books that starts rough but gets compelling. I loved the Wool world too. I read an omnibus I think it was referred to with the complete series or so I still think.
I've started a whole new batch of books this weekend. wanted to add them on the laptop with links and as I'm sure no one is going to suffer if I wait to do this tomorrow
Thanks, Magdelanye! The library has The Light Pirate and it does sound really good. I read the Wool Omnibus, too, and it's only the first part of the trilogy. I thought, at first, that it was the entire book but it turns out to be just the beginning.
Have you read the story of the background of the silo setup? That's the second book, Shift. The third book, Dust is the book I'm reading now. It's a good story.
All in all, the Wool series is a really good story.
I'm quite enjoying An Important Family, too. It's well written and the characters are interesting. It's an interesting story of emigration and there's a mystery within it, too, at the strange behavior of the main family.
It seems Petra that there are many editions of the chronology- its not really a series is it. I read it 4 years ago and when I went back to check, the first thing I saw was another edition that I had apparently marked to read. That seemed very odd and a little more digging revealed my review of the omnibus. I was able to remove the other edition but I've yet to check. This is Amazon I believe, part of their attempt to promote their own editions.I did read the background story. It did blow me away
More disturbing is my review. I had managed to forget it. Have you read it?(my review) Spoiler alert: don't want to detract from your pleasure so if you haven’t, wait till your done. Then we can discuss.
silo and wool 1-5
I'm sorry Petra I should have been writing on the laptop with links but the thing is it's still too bright without sunglasses but with sunglasses I can't see the keyboard Even the glare of the fone I'm using is almost too much. I remind myself, this too shall pass.
But I am on a roll and enjoying reading again after a little jaded slump
Happy for you Petra that the weather is allowing you to run again! And Ice might already be digging around preparing to plant....
What's up with Ellie?
there seems to be an obstacle to my attempts to get on my laptop for updates. Day before yesterday it was a day long power outage, yesterday and today I have a bus to catch and will not be back till 6 at which point I am tired and hungry. But today was pension day and I came online to pay some bills, and could not resist jumping on to flight paths, only to see huge silence.
whats up folks?
I am on an odd roll, reading books Ive ordered from the library. The cataract surgery did nothing to improve my reading vision but as I think Petra suggested and my doctor confirmed, theres some blurriness that will improve.
So Aleksander Hemon is blowing me away, now reading my 3rd,
It's good to come here and see a comment! Magdelanye, your vision should improve. How long has it been since the last surgery? Then, after about 6 months to a year, your vision will settle and you may need to adjust your reading glasses again (for the last time, hopefully). We just got step-dad a new pair of reading glasses. His vision had settled to it's final (hopefully) range.
I read your review on Wool just now. It's for the first book only. The story does continue with Shift and ends with Dust. There's a lot more to tell about the civilization of the Silo yet.
I did not know the information on the author! That's a shame. I wonder if it would have influenced my thoughts during reading if I'd known.
I finished another Andy Carpenter cozy murder mystery, Silent Bite. I listened to the audio version while jogging and it's perfect for that time. It's fun, interesting and funny.
I'm still reading An Important Family. It's a nice read but I'm beginnning to wonder what the point is. It seems so "everyday happenings" with no conflict or events for interest. I keep waiting for something to happen to stir up the everyday world of this family.
I'm getting ready to go to the Island for a week or two. I only have my phone for connection, so may not be around much. It's hard to post from the phone.
I'll be taking my e-reader with me and a couple of library books that will need to be returned soon. I need to figure that out today and pack things up.
I'll try to pop in occasionally. Have a good week, everyone. I hope to come back to a number of posts.
yes its always nice to see and often lots to think about. Right now I'm wondering about Ellie. Hoping she's busy not ill.My 2nd eye was Feb 14 so 2 weeks ago. At least the brightness has calmed down and no need for sunglasses. Actually it's turned dreary after a few lovely days and we've had the gamut of weather: rain, hail, and today enough snow to stick. There was also a tragic accident just down the highway and power was out Saturday for 12 hours. I had my headlamp so I stayed cozy under blankets reading.
Petra it took me a while but I am preferring to message on the phone as it's easier. The drawback of course is no links.
Aleksander Hemon and Patrick Leigh Fermor are both gripping. Both are drawing from some of the same material. AH from Bosnia has chosen to fictionalize his life and times and PLF describing his long trek comes of quite fictionalized.
I've also gotten somewhat better with audio books and quite enjoyed The Librarian of Burned Books.
(Do you have a trick Petra for finding your place?) I may have mentioned it already but I think it might be one you could enjoy.
Will this be a visit to step-dad?
I heard that we got the fringes only of a storm that's struck the island, so pack for cold and damp!
And have a great visit. Will look forward to updates.
